Recipes / Re: Mountain vs. River Crawdads
« on: May 18, 2023, 02:41:43 PM »
My experience is the mountain bugs are smaller and have tougher shells. No noticeable difference in taste for me. I prefer the mountain bugs because they are above the gold mining and presumably have less mercury. I tend to get more from the rivers. It’s a coin flip for 1-2 boils a year.

I use the victor traps, but use whole roasted peanuts in the shell. Have had plenty of triggers loaded with butter licked clean but no spring. On the trap, slightly raise the prong on the trigger and you can pierce the shell of the whole nut for a snug hold. They will really need to tug on the nut to get it off. You can smear the butter on the shell for added scent.
First couple of nights, don’t arm the trap. Let them get comfortable swiping the nuts. After two nights in a row of taken bait, set the hammer.
Ratzilla here was giving me the middle finger from the trap and I needed the BB gun to finish the job.

General Talk / Re: In search of a lumberjack...
« on: February 26, 2023, 09:45:50 AM »
I had some trees cut down near HWY 88 between Jackson and Kirkwood.  I called wood mizer in Sacramento area to ask about mobile millers. They pointed me to website that had contact info for millers. Got in touch with a local guy who slabbed some pine, cedar, and made dimensional lumber from the fir. (I later got the fir graded and am building a permitted shop with the fir.)
I had a neighbor with a tractor that helped me skid and deck the logs, but the miller had a log fetch he could use between his truck and a winch if needed.
I am pretty sure you can find a local faller, especially if you live in the timber.  I see lots of posts on sites like Nextdoor. Just make sure they are insured!!!
Not sure where you live, but hopefully this gives you some ideas.

Was thinking that that each angler impacted/harassed might be a separate violation for Karen.

Get it on video.  There have been a number of harassment case prosecuted in other states, not so sure about the People’s Republic.

The CA Coastal Commission might also be interested to hear how Pebble Beach Company is supporting harassment.

CA Regulations / Re: Sharks
« on: January 26, 2023, 08:40:33 PM »
Yes I read that website and study.  What I found interesting is that the shark encounters detailed by members of NCKA over the years do not show up as incidents in that report.  Was this because they weren't reported? ( I was unable to find an easy way to report shark encounters anywhere on the CADFW website).  Or perhaps because they were not classified as an attack?  If someone were to be bumped by a white shark and then swam back to their kayak and got the heck out of there, would this classify?

Not that you have the answers here, but I certainly do have a number of questions about that data.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

CA Regulations / Re: Number of Hooks Allowed for Sand Dabs vs. Halibut
« on: September 07, 2022, 10:04:35 PM »
So running around trying to get ready to possibly take my alum out. Thanks for the info on sand dab. So, i am guessing if you stark fishing for sand dabs you are downgraded to one pole vs multiple for halibut in the Monterey bay? TIA.

The way I read it, there is no restriction on poles/hooks for dabs or CA halibut in the ocean...

Yes!!  No hook or line restrictions for dabs or cali hali in Pacific Ocean unless you are in possession of… see other posts herein.

Safety First / Re: Ugh, flipped and downrigger ball was a mess
« on: September 07, 2022, 09:45:16 PM »
Yeah, first thing I did with my DR was replace the wire with braid.  I snagged bottom on one of my first trips that flipped me a mile off shore. I slit the line first thing before trying to right my rig.

Might there be opportunities at future meet-ups for those who are tester-endowed to allow the testerless to apply the test??

Wanted To Buy / Re: WTB Farmer John wet suit
« on: January 22, 2022, 11:53:35 PM »
After nearly cutting myself out of my old full body suit cuz I had to pee so bad, I bought a zip-up model the is kinda reverse farmer John. It is full length arms but short on the legs. I wanted the zipper so I could take a leak OTW. I wear heavy weight leggings under the WS.
