I'm part of the NWKA AOTY committee and one of the prizes we have lined up for 2016 is custom built rod from a local rod maker. He isn't a kayaker and is asking about ideas to make this rod unique. One of my thoughts was a leash attachment point.
Has anyone here done some thing similar?

If you were having a custom made rod for kayak fishing would you like a permanent leash point?

Personally, I'd like something above the reel but I'm torn between doing some in more elegant than the double zip tie method or going more along the lines of a fixed pad eye. Kinda like an oversized hook holder.

I only use leashes for surf launch and landings but the idea of a well built custom rod with a leash attachment point seems like a great idea.

Any other ideas?

Thoughts?

Here are a couple pictures of what I'm thinking about.

All I need in Alaska is the gear.  The fishing techniques are that much different.

I beg to differ ... while I haven't caught a pacific halibut in CA I have caught them in Alaska, Canada, Washington and Oregon.  They are pretty easy fish to catch once you find them.

All you need is a shark hook and a club!

I agree ... i prefer to hang on to the fish rather than releasing the bouy. Halibut are usually good for one good fight at the surface.
This was about a 45 pounder.

Pacific halibut aren't going to kill you but I wouldn't gaff one with a rigid gaff or kage as the first strike.  Most kayak guys that catch pacific halibut use a harpoon or shark hook attached to a bouy. Once you stick them they tend to go balistic.

For Sale / Holiday Special - Rock Solid Drive Arms
« on: December 15, 2014, 08:34:43 PM »
Ok guys!
I'm bringing back the intro deal on my solid aircraft grade drive arms.
Guys are beating the snot out of these arms in AK, WA, OR, CA and Florida and no one has broken one.... and no one will!
These are taped for bicycle pedals, if you want, or use standard Hobie pedals.
These are $85 plus $5 shipped (WA guys I need to collect tax) factory arms are $43 each so these are cheaper than factory replacements.

PM me your email and how many sets you want and I'll send you a paypal link.

Deal is good through the end of the year or till I sell the last 30 or so units I have from the last production run. Treat your self to the best insurance you can add to your drive.

Yes bicycle pedals are threaded one lefthand one righthand threads

I have been using a cheap set of plastic pedals for the last year and have been happy with them. They give me better grip than the hobie smooth pedals. I really like the idea of trying clip less pedals too.

9
These arms were designed to specifically address that problem. I had these made from solid high strength aluminum. Instead of the pedal shafts being press fit into the arm each arm is tapped for a standard 9/16" bicycle pedal. If you want to use the stock hobie pedals there is an included billet stainless shaft the threads into each arm and accepts the stock pedals.
I had a pre buy that is over and done with but I have some sets finished and ready to ship if you are interested. $100 each plus $5 for shipping for NCKA members. PM me if you are interested.

Hey guys,
You have all received your arms by not and I wanted to check in and see if anyone had feedback about the units. I am working on an installation sheet and will post it soon. I want to get the arms out as quick as possible.
So far I have heard back from some of the NWKA guys about the bungee retention system. The plastic piece is designed to hold the knot of the bungee and fit flush in the top of the arm.

Any feedback you guys might have would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you all. This has been a fun and I learned a lot in the process. Hope you all enjoy the product.
