For Sale / FREE: PVC Kayak Rack
« on: November 15, 2017, 12:07:54 PM »
I built this rack to hold my kayak and paddle board. Will fit kayaks up to 35" wide and I've had kayaks as long as 14' on it without issue.

I never glued it together, so it can be disassembled for transport.

Free to good home, pickup in Sacramento. I'm off I80/Marconi Ave.

For Sale / FS: 2010 Hobie Revo 13 $1100
« on: September 04, 2017, 05:55:10 PM »
Seems like the last 18 months the you know what keeps rolling down hill. Unexpected expenses keep coming.

Rather than slap them on a credit card, I'd rather put kayaking to the side for a bit.

This is a Dune colored 2010 Revo 13. In overall good shape. Stock fins.

A few mounts added. A Scotty and ramball on each side. An anchor trolley on the right.

One patch from a previous owner from running FF cables into the hull.

PO modified the peddles by removing the straps and adding a bit of bungee to keep them in the ready position.

No drive well cracks.

Includes seat, Hobie tackle organizer, Hobie paddle, and Hobie water bottle. (All accessories besides seat are essentially new)

A near new Wheeleez Mini cart is included.

Looking for $1200 firm for everything.

General Fishing Tips / Daiwa Lexa? Looking for advice.
« on: August 14, 2017, 09:20:15 AM »
Hi all,

Looking at the Daiwa Lexa 300 lefty to replace my RH Calcutta 400B. I just prefer a LH retrieve.

So after some research I'm looking at the Lexa 300.

I want a reel that can cover ground fish, halibut, and salmon. Is that a fair task to ask of the Lexa?

What gear ratio should I get?

Planning to get the power handle model.

Thanks,
Logan

Hobie Kayaks / Picked up my Revo 13 today
« on: April 30, 2017, 06:08:17 PM »
After lots and lots of reading and thinking, I settled on a Revo 13 as my next boat.

I started looking at the classifieds and Craigslist. Everything was either pre-2010 or overpriced. I specifically wanted a 2010. V2 drive, less prone to drivewell cracks, and light.

I had seen that Benzo (Ben) had mentioned he had gotten a 2015, and would be unloading his 2010. I pm'd him, and we made a deal.

I picked it up today, beautiful drive from Sacramento to the bay minus a bit of traffic.

Kayak is in great shape for a 7 year old boat and has some rigging done already.

Planning to put it in the water this week and then I'll make changes as needed. Doubt it will need much, pretty much just need to pick a FF.

Turbo fins and sailing rudder will be picked up from CCK asap.

Stoked is an understatement.

Pics, rigging pics and more coming later.

Cheers,
Logan

For Sale / FS: Feelfree Moken 12.5
« on: November 16, 2016, 10:15:02 AM »
Putting my Feelfree Moken up for sale. Have some things I would like to pay off and don't think I'll paddle til next spring/summer. I'll buy another kayak then. I don't like things sitting in the garage unused.

Anyways;

Feelfree Moken 12.5 in Blue. This is a rare color, I purchased the kayak from Headwaters in Lodi as an ex-demo boat.

I really like this one. It's very stable and quick and easy to paddle for it's size. Tracks well too.

It has the normal scratches from being a demo but no cracks, leaks, repairs etc.

Includes the uber comfy Feelfree Kingfisher seat.

$600/Firm or $650 and I'll include a 240cm Aqua-Bound Manta Ray Hybrid paddle.

General Talk / Advice from the Dads.
« on: August 13, 2016, 12:56:58 PM »
 :smt003

Well back in December my girlfriend and I found out were were going to be parents.

Fast forward, we're having a boy. pregnancy is going well, and he'll be here anyday.

I've been working like crazy to make some changes - mainly career related. I was traveling approximately 70% and approached my then employer about traveling less. Due to no other positions being open, I took a job with a company I had worked for previously- with the agreement of less travel.

As things would have it, I was still traveling quite a bit but the weeks I wasn't traveling, we were having a hard time making it financially.

A positioned opened up at the company I had left and I was offered the job, and accepted. So now we're doing better and I'm a lot less stressed about our financial situation, and now I don't have to travel anymore.

I was able to negotiate with the girlfriend and she agreed to one weekend of fishing a month. We'll see how well that works out - obviously I'll take it as it comes.

She's always been very supportive of me fishing and likes trips to Ocean Cove even if she just ends up hanging out in a chair near the cliffs with a bottle of wine.

I'm not sure why I wrote this after typing this far. I honestly don't have many friends here in Sacramento, and those that I do have don't have kids.

Just wanted to get some feedback from the dads on how they are able to juggle family life and their hobbies - fishing and kayaking are pretty much the only two I have.

I'm pretty used to doing my own thing all the time, but my Dad wasn't around when I was a kid - Divorce/Custody battle and I definitely want to be the best Dad I can be.

Cheers,
Logan

FeelFree / Feelfree Moken 12.5 Review
« on: August 10, 2016, 09:40:23 PM »
Hi All,

I recently decided to try something new. I sold my Trident Ultra 4.3 and had planned on getting back into a Trident 13, but then saw the new Trident series. I picked up the Moken 12.5 used from Headwaters kayak to fill the gap in the mean time. I'd always been interested in the Moken, but bought it without paddling first. I figured if Dan said they were a good boat, I didn't have much to worry about.

When I picked it up, the first I noticed was it is made of high quality plastic and is moderately heavy - around 72lbs.

The finish on the kayak is very good. It's just as nice as the higher end brands if not nicer than some.

The center hatch is for storage and not hull access. It's about 22x6" wide and 5" deep. Smaller plano boxes will fit in here. It can be cut out for through hull storage as well.

The front hatch is large enough to place a typical cart in and the hatch is very easy to open in the water.

The seat included - the FeelFree Kingfisher has a super padded bottom and stiff back. The kayak has a seat strap to keep it from sliding around. Once installed and adjusted, it's rock solid. It's extremely comfortable - the best seat I've tried so far.

The rear tank well is roomy and is designed for a crate. It even has straps to secure your crate - a really nice touch.

The front and side handles are molded in and are very usable.

The wheel in the keel is great for pavement or hard packed ground when you don't need to go far. You have to balance the kayak on a small wheel so I don't view it as a cart replacement by any means, but it's a really nice touch.

The kayak measures 12'7 and is 32" wide. It isn't designed to be a speed demon.

Paddling the Moken 12.5 is extremely pleasant. It doesn't take much to get her moving, and the glide is impressive for a kayak of this length. It tracks very well for its length, but I would add a rudder for ocean/fast water use. Speed is on par with many fishing kayaks, I would say on par with the Cuda 12.

In line with its dimensions it is VERY stable. I can side saddle this kayak and tip it to the point that the gunwale goes under before I fall out.

This kayak rides dry. The high rails and hull volume keep it high in the water even with my 240lbs in it.

I was able to stand and paddle around first try - I'm 6'1 and 240lbs. The standing platform is perfect. For reference, this boat was easier to stand in than my Cuda 12 I've owned previously.

Overall, this kayak is an excellent value for the money and deserves more looks from those looking for a great all around boat. I would not hesitate to take this boat in the salt, or anywhere in between. I think this is a great boat for folks who may want a drier more stable alternative to the Trident 13.

This ones a keeper. The girlfriend paddled it, and she wants one. Plan is to keep it for "her", and pick up an offshore boat this winter. The Moken will be my freshwater/girlfriend/tag along boat. If she was a little faster, she'd be perfect. The Moken 14 may be that boat. I will give the 14 a try when I start seriously shopping for a longer offshore boat.

I'll add more details/opinion as time progresses.

Give Dan a call, setup a demo and try one out. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Cheers,
Logan

For Sale / SOLD: 2011 Trident Ultra 4.3 with Rudder
« on: July 07, 2016, 03:48:12 PM »
Selling my 2011 Trident Ultra 4.3 with OK Rudder kit installed.

Boat has the NZ style seat, and I'm waiting for OK to get back to me as the seat back bracket bent. They sent me a new one but it's plastic and from a Necky. It works, but it's not as solid as I'd like. I will include an Ocean Kayak Comfort seat though along with the boat if you don't wanna wait for OK to figure it out.

Boat is all factory save for a cutting board mounted on the center hatch and a couple of holes drilled. The previous owner had a Dragonfly FF installed and drilled one hole in the tankwell for a 1-inch wire cap cover, and one up forward between the center and front hatch for another 1-inch wire cap cover. Both are currently marine gooped and do not leak.
I do have the patch kit from OK to permanently seal these up, just never had a chance to.

No cracks, repairs, etc. Solid boat.

The optional through hull twist cover has been added to the center hatch compartment so you can store rods inside the boat.

Overall condition on the boat is good, the usual scratches and has been used as it should, to fish. Seat is a bit sun faded on the fabric.

I thought I would love it even more than my previous T13 but the cockpit is not as great for a 240lb man with big sexy calves. They rub the hold downs on the center hatch a bit.

1.   The wire cap covers should be patched BUT they are water tight now. Matching yellow plastic welding patches from Ocean Kayak included.
2.   NZ seat should have the correct metal bracket acquired and installed. However, OK Comfort Seat is included for Free.99

I'm located in Sacramento and will have pictures up this weekend.

I bought another boat and I'm picking it up this weekend so she's ready to meet her new owner.

I'm looking for $800 firm, no less. I feel the boat is worth this.

I have an Ocean Kayak Prowler 13 for sale. 2013 or 2014 model, can't remember.

Sand color. No holes drilled. No repairs.

Minor dent in bottom. Needs to be left in the sun upside down and it'll pop right out. Or, due to lack of sunshine a heat gun will suffice.

Will include a basic Ocean Kayak seat and Carlisle Day Tripper paddle.

Use only a few times, great shape.

Bought for my girlfriend who wants one with a center hatch.

$450 firm.

General Fishing Tips / Ocean Cove?
« on: August 08, 2015, 01:13:40 PM »
Heading to Ocean Cove with my buddy next weekend to do some fishing. He's a ab diver/fisherman as well so he knows the good diving/spear spots, but hasn't strictly fished there much.

Any tips on good spots/depths to try out?

Planning on using shrimp flies with squid, big white grubs with 4oz heads and tube baits.

I'll be installing my Lowrance Elite 4X HDI so I'll be good there.

Picked up a 3mm farmer John wetsuit, have a NRS PFD, fish grip, spare paddle, whistle, bilge pump, rod leashes/paddle leash.

Won't have a VHF as funds aren't allowing unfortunately. We'll be buddied up though.

My question is, looking at the swell report Saturday is predicted as 7.5 at 9secs.

In the cove, how does that actually translate. Actually, is it even worth fishing in the cove?

Ocean Kayaks / Quick paddling review on my "New to Me" OK Trident 13
« on: July 19, 2015, 09:58:46 AM »
Let me preface this with the fact that I am a fairly new paddler, and this is a paddling review only.

I was given the chance to pickup a 2014 Trident 13 for a steal of a deal and jumped at the chance.

My first boat, a Malibu X-Caliber has to be sent back due to quality issues. My gripes with that boat was weight and speed - while needlessly stable it was a slug, and had a lot of hull slap.

My second boat, was a Jackson Cuda 12. Fairly stable boat, fairly fast. However, I didn't like the idea of taking it offshore. I sold it after paddling it three times.

A little about myself;

I'm 6'1 and hover between 235-255 throughout the year. I'm in fairly decent shape for a chubby guy, and quitting smoking last year has helped alot.

Balance wise, I feel I'm a bit above average.

I was looking for a boat that was light enough to put on top of my 4runner at the end of the day, stable enough for me to feel comfortable on in decent chop, and fast enough to allow me to go a couple miles each way without much, if any fatigue.

Most of the boats I looked at(including my Malibu) have moved towards a wide, grossly stable - yet fairly slow and heavy styling.

Stability:

The Trident 13 is 29.5" wide - however it sits much lower in the water than boats such as my X-Caliber(31" wide) and Cuda 12(31").

Because of the hull design and sitting lower in the water, you can notice right off the bat that your center of gravity is much lower. I honestly felt more comfortable right off the  bat in this boat than the Cuda, and in my opinion it is more stable(primary).

Being this was the first time out, I decided to try and stand in the T13 - something I had done first try in my Cuda 12.

I'm happy to report that I was able to, but I can tell the boat isn't really designed for it. As of now, I won't be throwing any casts standing up.

Speed:
The Trident 13 is no race car but it is certainly much faster than my X-Caliber was. I would say it has a slight edge on the Cuda 12, which was surprisingly quick for its width.

It tracks pretty well for its length and has a good amount of glide due to hull shape. I was not getting fatigued at all when I paddled it about 4 miles yesterday.

Comfort:
While the included seat is no La-Z-Boy, it was sufficent and stayed put(no sliding) which I can appreciate.

At my height, I had plenty of room and I can see this yak working well for someone up to 6'4 or so.

With myself and a jug of water, cart, shoes, and bag full of misc the only scupper holes taking water were the ones in the front of the footwell. They seem to drain well, but I can see myself getting a bit more wet offshore. Seeing as how I like the water, I don't see this as a huge problem - especially with a wetsuit on.

Features:

The rod pod is awesome. Although I wasn't fishing yesterday, it was very handy to set things in the little cut outs while paddling, and to gain access to the hull where my bag and jug of water were stored.

The front hatch is large enough that my kayak cart fits inside with the wheels removed, along with my other necessities.

The only additions I have initially planned are the installation of my Lowrance Elite-4X HDI and a Yak Gear Achor Trolley.

Down the road, I'm fairly certain I'll add a rudder to aid in tracking both offshore and while standing and paddling.

Overall, for me the Trident 13 seems to be the perfect balance of speed, stability, and features. I'm looking forward to putting many hours into paddling this kayak and rigging it along the way.

I hope this mini-review of sorts is helpful - I had a hard time finding info from guys that were on the larger side that paddled this boat.
