I fish and dive from the Van Damme State Park many times.  There's a beach with easy access to the water right across from this park and it's a well protected cove.  To the left of this cove are some good areas for rock fishing.

Hi Abking,

I checked with my friends whose own the tea house in the cove to find out the Salmon fishing condition there.  He said they caught several salmons on the opening day but the weather turned sour so the boats aren't going out.  I'll bring my other kayak to lend him for the trip in March so he can join us.  BTW, you said we don't need to use the downrigger for Salmon trolling in Shelter Cove, could you educate me how to rig for it?  I know the "usual way" where you lose a canon ball when you catch a Salmon.

Thanks,

Sailfish

I can't hardly wait until March!  I'm ordering the Scotty Manual downrigger and plan to install it on my Mini-X for this trip. Hope the package will arrive by next week.  Any advises/suggestions are welcome  :smt006

The picture above is the public marina in Shelter Cove.  And yes, it's concrete at the end of the ramp.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Lake Mendo Sat 1/13/07

Got to the lake around 8:30am.  A little chilly but no wind so the water is glass like.  The water level is very high which flooded the boat ramp about 3ft.  Tried to hail anyone on CH69 but no reply.  Trolling with live bait toward Crappie Cove but no hookup.  Saw lots of fishes on FF suspended around 30ft but no love.  Paddled to the North to checkout the cove but no bite.  Saw 1 power boat on the North end but no kayaks!   Throw out the new surface lure around the bend but nada.  Feel sooo lonely so start to head back to the ramp in early afternoon.  I guess the fishes are not hungry today!

I'll be there around 8am.  Will contact you via channel 69.

Just return in time for tomorrow tournament.  I don't have a paypal account so I use my wife account to register.  See y'all at the lake in the morning.

Got to the water around 9am and met Pelican at the launch, we went to the cove at the North and spent most of the day trolling and looking for boil.  Got a couple strikes but no hook-up!  Later in the afternoon, we paddled to the South cove and met Guitarzan, Mooch, and Marmite heading in since they got their limits.  Saw lots of bait fish and stripers on the FF but no takers today.  I wanted to fish until dark but the it started to rain so we decided to head in.  I really enjoy fishing here at Mendo lake and glad to meet new friends from NCKA and looking forward to another trip :smt003
