General Talk / All your favorite food is fake
« on: July 11, 2016, 10:45:45 AM »
This was a great article how the fish most people eat, the grass-fed beef and the olive oil are all fake (e.g. not as labeled). Remarkably (and maybe because it was written in New York), he never made the obvious recommendation. You want to eat the real thing, you got to catch it yourself!
Still an interesting read....

General Talk / What Lurks beneath- dead zone off SF Bay....
« on: February 17, 2016, 09:55:24 AM »
Great article by Brendan Buhler  on upwelling and the anoxic water on the bottom outside the bay:

"Then in April 2011, the attention of Largier and his colleagues was caught by data from a regular monthly survey of the Bay done by the U.S. Geological Survey. It showed a continuous layer of low-oxygen water along the bottom of the central and south Bay. The oxygen levels were less than 5 milligrams per liter—low enough to look like the sign of a water quality problem caused by organic pollution, Largier says. But the water was also cold and salty, and clearly from the ocean. Here, sneaking over the sandbar and slithering across the bottom of the Bay, was the killer upwelling."

« on: November 24, 2015, 01:41:00 PM »
I rec'd a note from DFW that the herring have showed up in Richardson Bay and more are expected. No comment on whether we shoudl be concerned about domoic acid poisoning. Someone know if they are off limits?

Craftsmen's Corner / Anyone have pre-2003 Zodiac Zoom Oar locks?
« on: June 21, 2015, 10:48:56 AM »
I have a pre-2003 oarlock Zoom, and I want to get a good  photo/measurements/ or plaster cast of the original oarlock pins to make some. The diagram on zodiac is rudimentary, but I'd like better if I can find it.  Anyone got or know where to get these pre-2003 type (1/2 twist to lock) oarlocks?
Thanks!

Safety First / Horizon HX 150 on sale for $79.99
« on: January 06, 2015, 10:42:45 AM »
If I'm reading this correctly, West Marine is selling the Horizon handheld radio for $99.99 and there's a $20 rebate available.

http://content.westmarine.com/documents/pdfs/Rebates/2015%20Gear%20Up%20For%20Summer%20rebate%20$20-$40%20rebate%20pad%205%23%2014-1684.pdf

At $80 this seems like a pretty good deal.

Craftsmen's Corner / Rod repair- where to get blank materia?
« on: July 19, 2014, 02:10:02 PM »
I acquired (e.g dumpster dived) about 4 partial rods. 2 have the tips broken off 8-12" from the end. I need to find some tapered rod material to reconstruct tips for these rods.
Any idea where to find tapered carbon tubing?

Thanks!

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Help rigging a Mirage classic
« on: November 08, 2013, 10:20:52 AM »
Okay I've joined the ranks of pedalers.. but I got a deal on a mirage classic, which some of you realize doesn' have the nice wells and mounting brackets that the newer boats have.
So I'd like to hear/see how folks have manged to mount their rod holders, milk crates, etc on the mirage classic.. what recommendations have worked for mounting stuff with minimum holes, or any other mods people have found useful.
I hate to randomly start poking holes in the thing...Danielson's look pretty much impossibly on this boat, but maybe you have  better idea...

And spare me the "you shudda bought the new...." whatever.. its a gateway drug.. and I paid a gateway price.. but I'm pedaling and having a good time, just want to make the best of it.

Thanx!

A good day on the river today 25 lb + bright chrome. Trolling chartreuse silvertron, about 1030 Am.

Okay I'm about to ask a really stupid question, but has no one noticed a -1.4 ft tide this weekend.
Wind at Tomales 7 mph...
Anyone besides me thinkin' clams in the morning, hali's in the afternoon, crabs in the evening?

Go easy, I said it was a stupid question!

Just a quick report. Paddled around glassy water at the Port this afternoon, 3-6. 3 kayaks out there but weren't from NCKA.

The boy and I jigged for nothing, trolled for nothing and finally drowned worms for a sweet 1.5 lb white cat for dinner.

The 3 yaks hooked up 4 cats that I saw.

Troller in an alum PB hooked up a 19" striper among 3 anglers..

lots of little fish dotting the surface right at sundown..

P.S. Is there some kind of decal for this club I can stick on my canoe?

One thing I appreciate about NCKA is the DIY ingenuity of the group. I know there are several really well organized minitruck campers on here. I was looking for away to hang my rod(s) in the top of my shell. I tried epoxying 3/4" PVC to the ceiling, and sliding the rods in.. but with vibration and temperature, the Epoxy didn't hold very well. Also, I wasn't too keen on the vibration of PVC against the rod.  I've been pondering it, but someone has already solved this question, if you'll just share the solution.

After that, I need find someone who knows how to bend plexigass to replace a window in that shell. Heat gun? Vacuum-form?  Local Tap's said they don't do it... anyone tried it?
