General Talk / South Bay Launch spots for sturgeon??
« on: December 29, 2004, 06:35:15 PM »
Anybody ever launch from Alviso? Mountain View? Palo Alto?  Milpitas? I'm looking for something close to San Jose.  With all the rain dumping in from the coyote there's gotta be some fish around.  I haven't fished the area since I was a kid but I remeber it being a pain to navigate and when returning on a low tide we had to pull some risky manuevers to get back.  Any tidal info, launch locations, paddle distance to fishable water, general wind info?????? Anyone interested in exploring the area?

General Talk / GPS Recomendations

I managed to get the christmas shopping done and under budget so I  decided I'm gonna get myself a handheld gps unit.  I know very little about gps features so I need some advice.  I'm trying to stay under $200.  Whats everyone else using? What should I look for as far as features go? Waas enabled? Will I need to purchase additional maps/software?  Thanks

Alright, I know what you're thinking, "this has nothing to do with kayakfishing,"  but hear me out.  What I'm offering you is an opportunity to buy yourself some fishing time when things heat up next spring.   You see,  after spending a day or two sprucing up the house by adding new flooring now (when things are slow)  YOUR WIFE WILL BE SO IMPRESSED SHE'LL LET YOU HAVE THOSE PRECIOUS WEEKENDS WHEN THE BITE IS ON.  You'll instantly go from this  :smt018  :smt014 to this :smt007  :smt008

How's that for a sales pitch
I have about 250 sq. ft of Pergo laminate flooring in a cherry color and another 200 sq. ft. in a maple color.  This is the highest grade laminate made by Pergo and usually runs about $4.50 a sq. ft. , I'm asking $2.50, just wanna move it.

One of the truck drivers at my work reported decent action at San Luis(main lake).  They trolled broken back rebels for 3 keeper sized fish, kept one for dinner and released the others.  He said later that day they ran into some shore anglers who bagged a couple fish in the twenty lb range.   The only problem is that this guy never gives up the locations and thats a huge amount of water to cover so it might be a crap shoot.  I'm still hoping to get out of HMB for another crab run.  Seems like every weekend the weather sucks then come Monday it lays down.  I may run up to HMB on Sunday anyway, just to check things out.

How we gonna determine weight?  Certified scales? Any digital scale?  I also fish alone alot and don't always have a witness, will photographic evidence on the water work?

I had to wait for kayak4fish to get online to find out about the new message board.  All that time with no yakfishing talk just about killed me.  On the positive side, my homework output inreased and I also got in some much needed study time before finals.  Bill, the wider variety of smilies on your site has won me over :smt007

Ernie, its good to hear from you.  When can we expect to see you out on the water?

General Talk / Big Fish Pool for '05
« on: December 10, 2004, 02:31:12 PM »
Kevin, I was thinking we'd only put in on the species we'd be targeting.  So you only get in on the categories you want to.

Re: Fish Weight

With the sturgies I was thinking weight would be the best measurement, I've seen some pigs that were short for their weight.  How about we use the Length Girth equation for weight estimation on any released fish.  I've never yakfished for them so I'm not sure how easy it would be to get em to sit in your lap while you measure and photgraph them.  Maybe a quick photo next to the boat or a paddle just for scale?  Definitely open to suggestions on this one.

As for other fish:

Pic of it weighed on a scale works for me.  Must be caught from a kayak, verified by a fellow yakfisher or if your not fishing with a buddy then an on-the-water shot of the fish laying somewhere on deck should be provided.

I figured this to be more of a money between friends type of deal, more for bragging rights than profit.  Anyone disagree or wanna add to it? Spark, should we add a spearfishing category for your 50lb ling?

Anyone interested in putting in a couple bucks for a Norcal big fish pool for next year?  Maybe $5 a category: Halibut, Salmon, Striper, Lingcod, Sturgeon.
