General Talk / Gulkana River, Alaska
« on: December 04, 2012, 11:50:15 AM »
Looks like at the end of June 2013 I am going to be doing a 4 day raft float for everything that will bite on the Gulkana with a friend and his buddy that is local to the area.  Needless to say, I am beyond jacked about this one.  Anybody ever been there?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Lowrance Elite-4 Color Sonar/GPS Combo
« on: November 28, 2012, 02:42:29 PM »
thinking of upgrading to a GPS and Color unit... I currently have the old X50ds model.  Does anyone have any experience to let me know if the elite 4 will be a serious sonar upgrade?

Hobie Kayaks / mirage drive maintenance
« on: November 21, 2012, 12:20:39 AM »
Just finished breaking down, cleaning and lubricating my '08 mirage drive.  Took my time, so it took maybe 2 hours... all I can say is: WOW... it is so incredibly smooth and quiet now.  Can't wait to get it back on the water and put some pressure on it.  Last time out it had a brutal squeak and trolling pace, total suck-fest.  One thing I did that made a big difference is tighten the hell out of the bolt and nut that the pedals pivot on when adjusting their position.  I never move them, so I just wrenched it all the way down tight.  That alone got rid of a noticeable amount of play.  Chains felt a bit loose to me, so when reinstalling them I got them just a bit tighter than they were.  Now they feel more like the chains on my wife's V2 drive, which has considerably less mileage on it.  A little messy and time consuming, but totally worth it, good rainy day project.

General Talk / kayak recommendation for a friend
« on: November 15, 2012, 03:00:35 PM »
got a gal pal wanted to get herself a kayak... Her main goal is just something to get out in along with the dogs... so deckspace is probably the most important thing.  Two dogs... one lab and one little mutt.  Not really for fishing.  What kayak would be a good choice?

A good article with good pictures showing the differences between the old hull, and the redesigned hull that fixed the drivewell crack problem.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Transducer question...
« on: August 31, 2012, 10:37:25 AM »
I decided to ditch the thru hull location in favor of a scupper mount.  Good thing to... well I pulled it off the hull, the goop was really bubbly.  I was careful when I put it in too.  Judging by the way the bubbles were shaped, it appeared that as the goop dried and contracted, it sucked air from the foam doughnut.  Anyway... after some serious pvc engineering, I have a very clean/cool looking scupper mount... One oversight... the scupper tube is at a slight angle (off vertical, port to starboard)  so my transducer has a slight deadrise angle to it... I would estimate 5 degrees or so.  It is a lowrance, and will a little research I found that they recommend nothing over 10 degrees (mounting inside a vee hull) so I should be good right?  I don't see how having a slight side to side tilt matters all that much in a kayak that is rarely (if ever) sitting flat on the water to begin with.

Fishing Tournaments and Events / An idea I've kicked around...
« on: August 04, 2012, 05:04:40 PM »
I haven't put any serious thought into this, so I have no real specifics or anything.  Would anyone be interested in a "invasive species tourny?"  My idea would be something like Lake Pillsbury... It is chalk full of squawfish.  They are nonnative, and everyone would love to see them eradicated.  It would be a fish and chill kinda deal... more for fun than anything else.  Two man teams... most total weight wins, with little prizes for big fish or total fish or something.  Perhaps something could be arranged to have the fish transported to a fertilizer plant or something, so it isn't just total killing for the sake of killing.  Anybody have any ideas, thoughts, suggestions?  Maybe a little late for this year, but next spring?  I know Pillsbury is a serious haul for a lot of you guys down in the Bay, but it is a beautiful place with great camping.

General Talk / Looking for a member...
« on: August 01, 2012, 03:36:01 PM »
I was looking at old fishing reports, and came across several written by H20spider... I think he changed his name to Hydrospyder.  Neither name shows up in the members search... another name change?  I want to pick his brain a bit regarding twin lakes bridgeport.

General Fishing Tips / Twin Lakes Bridgeport, september...
« on: July 02, 2012, 01:19:06 PM »
I just got invited on a trip up to twin lakes in mid september.  this is new water to me.  Anyone have any tips on the area?  I would expect cooler weather at that elevation to have brought the fish to the surface by then... any thoughts?
