Going there this week. Anyone ever fished it this time of year?  Any tips?

General Talk / Crabbing for WAF... help a brother out
« on: April 22, 2013, 05:43:33 PM »
My wife's birthday is this weekend, she would like to get some fresh crab.  I could hit anywhere from bodega to fort bragg.  Reds would be fine with her.  Anyway, I have two traps, but have never been out before for crab.  Any info would be appreciated.  Somewhere well protected would be wonderful if the weather and wind fail to cooperate.  Are there any good spots withing Bodega Bay?

Been thinking I haven't been there in ages (pre puddle years) and I could go for a BBQ'd Koke.  Has anyone been there in the past 2 years?  Any luck? What about the water levels and what not?  I know that drawdown must have cause some havoc on the kokes and trout, but has it recovered at all?  Internet searches haven't turned up much...

General Talk / An idea for another forum section...
« on: February 28, 2013, 02:55:00 PM »
I was thinking it would be kinda cool if there was a separate spot in the forums, where there could be threads on specific bodies of water, where the threads would sort alphabetically by the name of the body of water.  Have an Almanor thread, amador, beardsley, collins... so on and so on.  The threads wouldn't be for jaw jacking and what not... more for strick informational purposes.  We could volunteer to write the initial post for a specific body of water that we feel we are sort of "experts" on.  Including driving directions and maps and wikipedia links and what not.  Then others could fill the posts with tips and tricks and general how to type stuff.  It would be a tremendous resource for us as we explore new waters.  It was like when I went to bridgeport and twin lakes earlier this year... I didn't know a damn thing about the place and everyone was really helpful in getting me the 411... but if this existed, it would be in one easy to check place.  It could be handled sorta like the "members only" stuff with a post limit to access the info... anyway, just an idea.

General Talk / Members profile signatures... the best!
« on: February 28, 2013, 01:14:40 PM »
Several of the profile sigs used by members on this board are awesome.  Some are poignant, while others are informative... others still are just hilarious.  In the category of hilarious I believe dune 12 deserves special mention:

"My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it"

awesome... just awesome.

Well, Lake Sonoma still needs to clear up before I will go back to fish for trout with fins, so I figured I would give Collins a shot with a buddy.  I've never been there before, but I figure the fish should be from the surface down to maybe 20ft.  I have read that the east side of the dam is good.  Any other advice from someone who has fished there would be great!  Any company is more than welcome of course.

General Talk / Lowrance Elite tip
« on: February 21, 2013, 11:23:45 AM »
Just got mine from the brown shirt guy last night.  Plugged it in to make sure it worked, and all went well... so I set about taking care of the waterproofing issues that have been documented.  Sealed up the SD slot... as for the Aux. port on the back, salty had mentioned home depot having a cap that works, but being impatient, I set about looking around the house for something that would work.  Found an old Blistex tube, the blue colored tube (don't think that matters) and the cap fits like it was made for it!  I trimmed about an 1/8in. off it so the profile was lower.  Inside the cap are a couple sealing rings that actually cause it to "snap" onto the back of the unit.  Put some dielectric grease on the contacts and added some marine silicone to the cap for good measure.  Anyway, awesome solution to a really stupid problem.

You have to sign up, which is free, but then you can go through and see pics and stuff of the all tackle world records for all the species.  It's pretty interesting to see some of the less common fish (to us anyway)

General Talk / just cashed out some WAF points for an elite 4
« on: February 12, 2013, 10:36:38 PM »
Ordered my Lowrance elite 4 gps combo.  Going to be an awesome upgrade.  I went with the non-dsi model, didn't want to learn something new, and figured I didn't want to deal with the potential depth limitations. Not to mention, my current transducer will be good to go, so install will be a breeze.

General Talk / Shuttle Hawk question...
« on: February 08, 2013, 04:13:54 PM »
So obviously in order to dive, they need to be on a down plane... do they have any issues working with a diving lure?  Just wondering if the lure diving could pull the back end of the SH down and prevent it from diving to the set depth.

General Talk / Berryessa question...
« on: February 07, 2013, 11:11:57 AM »
I am sure I could look this up online, but I will ask here too.  Any mussel inspection nonsense I should know about for the berry?  Powerboat, kayak or otherwise? Thanks!

General Talk / Quick Danielson crab trap question...
« on: December 20, 2012, 04:56:49 PM »
I was visiting my Dad in Oregon for my birthday and he and my wife surprised me with two Danielson Crab Pots... my question is this: Are they legal in Cali?  They have the two escape rings of proper size on top of the trap.  By the way I read the regs, that seems fine, but it also seems like the regs assume the rings will be on the sides of the trap.  Anyway, thanks in advance for the advice.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / light light light baitcasting...
« on: December 13, 2012, 10:46:24 AM »
I have been thinking about getting an ultralight kinda baitcasting setup, but my question is this:  I am seeing rods with lure weight ranges down to 1/4oz. or so, but can you really cast something that light with a baitcasting reel?  The majority of my baitcasting experience is with heavier tackle and or trolling.  I realize I will need to get a reel with appropriate specs, but does anyone have any experience throwing extremely light lures with such a setup, and is it really doable for any kind of distance at all?
