It would seem to me that the only way to damage that pulley would be to have the idler cable too tight.  Of course it may have been defective to begin with.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Trolling, Downriggers or not?
« on: April 24, 2013, 09:45:58 PM »
On a hobie, (I have an outback) i can see no reason why someone wouldn't want a downrigger.  As far as I'm concerned having a lot of weight and drag and your line sucks.  Fishing for me is all about the fight.  Maybe on a paddle yak downriggers would be a problem, I really can't say.  Downriggers put you at the depth you intend to fish... period.  If you are marking fish at 45ft. and you are pulling a lure that runs at five feet, set your DR at 40ft. and be confident you ARE FISHING where the fish ARE AT.

General Talk / Crabbing for WAF... help a brother out
« on: April 22, 2013, 05:43:33 PM »
My wife's birthday is this weekend, she would like to get some fresh crab.  I could hit anywhere from bodega to fort bragg.  Reds would be fine with her.  Anyway, I have two traps, but have never been out before for crab.  Any info would be appreciated.  Somewhere well protected would be wonderful if the weather and wind fail to cooperate.  Are there any good spots withing Bodega Bay?

It's a bummer you guys down south have to deal with so much of that kind of crap.  Not too many places up here in Sonoma you don't feel comfortable leaving your rig.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Clams on the Mendocino Coast???
« on: April 12, 2013, 06:21:58 PM »
I think clams can be found just about anywhere when the tide is out.  Mud flats in bays would probably be best, but I can't think of anywhere in Mendocino County that fits that description.

At least the water finally cleared.  Another week of warm weather and the lake is gonna blow up.  The water level is a bummer though.  Mendo is low too.

Went out there for a quick trip after work the other day and I've been getting whiffs of gasoline ever since. Just thought it was comin from other cars I had no puddles under my truck. Climbed under today an sure as shit some fucking loser cut two 4" long holes in my fuel filler hose!!!! Just a heads up. Spend the money and launch elsewhere unless the fishing becomes on fire in that area I won't launch there anymore!!

Just once in my life I want to catch a dirtbag messing with my vehicle.

Hobie Kayaks / Re: New Hobie parts
« on: April 12, 2013, 12:04:04 PM »
I have my battery in the rear hatch, i use a carved out gear bucket to store it in.  I'm sure this thing is a response from Hobie because I'm sure most people do the carved out bucket method.  I like the clean factory look.  I hit a rock and jacked up my Mirage Drive the other day and bent the rods, so I'm headed to Sunrise Mtn Sports in Livermore today.  I'll ask them about the new parts.

I hit a submerged log in the Russian river one time and bent the leading mirage drive mast.  You can straighten them out if you have a bench vise and a big pair of channel locks.  If nothing else, you can get them pretty straight and save them for spares.

Being the owner of two english bulldog/pitbull mixes I can attest to the lethality of their gas... Their ass produces some weapons grade stuff.  That, and their slobber is suitable gear lube for heavy equipment.  If they weren't so cute...

General Talk / Re: Keeping bass
« on: April 12, 2013, 11:12:22 AM »
When I am freshwater meat hunting I generally target panfish, which I prefer to bass taste wise.  Of course bait fishing for redear and other panfish you will occasionally gut hook a large mouth (I pinch my barbs down) However if I hook a bleeder I will keep it so it doesn't go to waste.  Not my favorite.  They don't taste anything like a striper unfortunately.  They are plenty edible, and not "bad" at all, just not my favorite.

Sitting around in heaven...

"how'd you die?"

"Animal attack..."

"Wow, what kind?  A bear?  A mountain lion?"

"A beaver"

Death by beaver.. this is NOT the way I would want to go out. Nor would I want that on my tombstone!

Well, not THAT kind of beaver anyway...

That has to rank up there with Steve Irwin getting a stingray barb to the heart.  What are the odds of it hitting an artery?
