General Fishing Tips / Re: Lip gripper recommendation
« on: May 23, 2024, 03:18:46 PM »
I have had both the types Sonny and Al posted. Overall, I I feel the SS type suits me best. It does require some maintenance and a bit of oil

+1 to these guys' opinions.
I had a ling I wanted to release break its jaw trying to spin on the plastic plier-type ones, and have since been using a Boga that I got in a trade. It is far superior because of the swivel feature, IMHO. Just oil it once in a while. There are quality knock offs out now that are way cheaper than the originals.

if you go for the plastic type, just leash it because I've seen lingcod spin it out of an anglers' hand more than once, and then dive to certain death with the plastic gripper still on its face. :smt009

there were many great memories from the past few days, but a few stand out:

running across Eddie on the 1 commuting home as MDoka_Matt, Isao and I made our way through the upper bay area

watching Tractor Dan win one of the gaffs I made. F*** Yeah!

finally making it to Shueland, my first visit was the definition of FUN

certainly the orca drive by

...and then about a thousand tiny spots of hilarious joy as I got to camp with a couple of the best people  I know

thinking about all these is almost bringing tears to my sunburned and salt encrusted beady little eyes  :smt044

Thank you to Eric for creating this wonderful monster, to Matt and Isao for giving me the opportunity to attend, to Roger and Dennis for the hamachi and JD shots, and to all the great fisherfolk that I've missed seeing for the past few years.

I had fun  :smt006

Sounds like Risso’s dolphins maybe
They get scars from Humbolt squid that show up white against their skin

General Talk / Re: Facial Hair Trimmer Recs
« on: May 03, 2024, 11:10:43 AM »
I'm on my second Wahl trimmer. The one I'm using was an upgrade, a set with a full size plug in unit and a smaller battery powered detail trimmer. The thing came with a bunch of guides and it's been a workhorse on my walrus bristles.

if there are other recs out there I'm curious about reviews.

CA Regulations / Re: Halibut changes… permanent?
« on: December 12, 2023, 09:01:39 AM »

two fish per day is plenty. Yearly qota is bad idea I think. Maybe reduce bag limits in the BAy but not open ocean. So many guys brailing the hot spots in bay, taking lots of fish that are barely legal.

Bushy

^ what he said. I'm on board.

Craftsmen's Corner / Re: Maker motivation. Greenland Paddle

Always thought this would be a neat project. I'm a fan of the Greenland style paddle.
It would make a great canvas for some woodburned decorations...

General Fishing Tips / Re: Hoop net replacement
« on: October 24, 2023, 09:14:57 AM »
I've done two hoop netting replacements using a replacement landing net. The big green ones they use on powerboats.
just have to match the hoop diameter and the net mouth then sew it on.
