Calibut ? Or pacific halibut?  Any sandy spot less than 150ft qualifies for a calibut area.

I can’t see them, but I saw them in person and caught a few myself the following day.  That spot has some really nice petrale sole and if the current didnt start ripping, I would have got more than the 6 I kept.  Its work to get to the flatfish grounds, but it can be very rewarding.

I would probably buy it over an new Outback if its stable enough cause I like the GTvdrive over the stupid 180 or 360 drive.  I also like the simplicity of the rudder too.  Also the price is better than the Outback by a substantial amount

I have caught a few over the years.  2 of them came trolling for salmon and bit way up in the water column.  There is no limit for them so there is probably plenty to be had in certain areas.  Brackish water is where they spawn I believe.

I was very happy with the large Frabile that I used for many years until the hoop corroded out. I replaced it with a big ass Beckman and am very happy with the quality. I thought I wanted the teardrop shaped hoop but in some practice swipes in the store I liked the regular hoop style better.

Pool noodles make it float. I actually like them on the hoop itself instead of in the handle. I can let the hoop float on the surface with the handle in my lap if a fish shows it's not ready to net yet without the net wanting to sink. You'll find something that works for you.

Cheers,
Brad

Leaving the net in the water while bringing the salmon in is a bad idea.  Beckman does make great nets, but the one I own with the weighted sock it just too big for use on the kayak.

Just stuff foam pool noodles in the handle.

Guys do it up here in Eureka and Trinidad and also in Shelter Cove.  Im pretty sure you don’t need cocle hooks because you are not using bait.  I watched guys get their limits with 3oz Pline laser minnows.  Jake on the Seahawk will jig for them while his clients are mooching.  It works better standing because you do long quick strokes up and then let it fall and repeat.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Kayak Salmon Fishing 101 ?

If you fish shallow and too fast you will mostly catch coho.  If you want big kings, slow and low on the bottom does the trick.  8-12oz minimum on weight.  Presentation matters when the bite isn’t wide open.  Keep it simple and know where your bait is in the water column helps alot.  This is done with a dialed in FF where you see your line/bait on the screen and sometimes you can see the salmon go after the bait on the screen.  Short Bus spreader with 10-14” leader for the weight and a short bus flasher or no flasher if its shallow and clear.  If bait is around like anchovies, herring or sardines, sabiki or castnet fresh bait to use dead or alive.  Always check their bellies to see what they are eating because you will learn their eating patterns for future trips and seasons.  A big net is a key tool.  I dont know how many times I have seen a kayaker or NCKA member have an insufficient net for landing a good sized salmon.  Slack tide tends to be primetime, especially high tides.  Look for 53°F water.  Look for birds to find bait to find fish.  Specifically murries or diving pelicans.  Fish along current lines where water color changes.  4-5ft leader for your hooks.  4/0-5/0 Owner No Escape Herring hooks tend to be my go to hooks.  25-30lb leader line.  Maxima is my go to. Troll at 1.8-2.5mph most of the time, but occasionally2.5-3.5mph may be needed to encourage a bite.  Slow down and speed up or make a small turn will sometimes create a bite.

*I used incomplete sentences to keep it short and to the point

Outback all the way.  Stay away from the heavy slower PA.  Not worth the hassle off ocean fishing.

Welcome.  What’s your first name?  I have met most of the regular kayak fishers in Humboldt.  I’m Rob or Robert

Trinidad is the most consistent place to catch a pacific halibut from a kayak.  Look up all my past reports.

The 2022 Pacific halibut quota for the California sport fishery is 38,740 pounds – approximately the same as the 2021 quota.

That’s a lie!  We lost some quota due to the incompetence of the DFW not being able to keep an accurate count for the 2021 pacific halibut quota.

The pacific halibut season will go quick since we have no salmon fishing in June and July so there will be more pressure on Pacific halibut.  I’m sure the CA DFW will manage to mess up the count this year too.
