General Talk / First charter tomorrow morning. Tips/advise welcome.
« on: June 27, 2017, 02:10:25 PM »
Hi all,

I'm going out tomorrow morning on the Salty Lady out of SF for Salmon with a buddy who set the trip up. This will be my first time fishing off of a boat that isn't my kayak, so any advice would be welcome. I've fished for salmon before but I have no clue about boat etiquette, or how self sufficient I'm expected to be. Like how much of my own gear should I bring?

Any help in not making an too much of an ass of myself would be welcome.

Thanks!
-Bryan

Wanted To Buy / WTB: J-style roof rack
« on: March 22, 2016, 10:42:32 AM »
I just got a new Hyundai Tuscon with a roof rack, however the antenna sticks up enough that I'll need to have the kayak on it's side  :smt011

Does anyone have an old set of the J-Style cradles?

Wilderness Systems / Is the t120's stability considered average?
« on: September 21, 2015, 10:22:20 AM »
Hey folks,

I'm shopping for my first yak and had a chance to take a Tarpon 120 out for a quick spin yesterday. In it's defense it's the first kayak I've been in/on though I did do a considerable amount of white water canoeing about 15 years ago.

My two initial impressions were that
A> It's pretty comfortable and
B> It's not as stable as I expected when hearing about sit on top kayaks. I wouldn't call it "unstable" but it was enough that I felt hesitant to practice the motion of turning around to get gear out of an imaginary milk crate.

So, my question: When compared to other SOT kayaks of similar size is the T120's stability considered average, slightly less, or above average?

I'm planning to go try out a Trident 13 and whatever else they have as well as take the T120 out for a couple hours.

Thanks!

Introductions / Greetings from Concord
« on: September 03, 2015, 10:13:57 PM »
Hi folks!

A good friend of mine has invigorated me to get fishing more, mainly after a excellent trip to Ocean Cove a month or so ago. My wife and I stuck to the shore poke holing while my friend went out on his 'yak and while I didn't catch much (a small-ish greenling and some itty bitty monkeyface eels) as compared to my friend (4-5 huge rockfish and a monster lingcod), I had an awesome time.

I used to go fishing a lot with my dad, but between chasing girls, moving out and my dad slowing down I hadn't gone in a long time until my wife's family introduced me to poke holing for monkeyface eel which seemed like magic. I had forgotten how enjoyable fishing can be even if you're not catching anything.

I'm considering getting a kayak, though honestly I'm dreading putting a bunch of money into another hobby when I could just as easily be spending it on the house or something else more "necessary". Yak or not I want to get fishing more and it's great to hear from other local fishermen.
