General Talk / Simms Sun Sleeves
« on: May 14, 2014, 09:03:44 PM »
Anyone here ever try the Simms Sun Sleeves? Looking for opinions on them. I have a bunch of long sleeve performance "sun shirts" but was looking at these as another option. I'm ordering their Solar Flex Guide Gloves and might pick up the sleeves as well. Hopefully the sleeves will be long enough for me (the common problem with my LS shirts) and I wonder about the comfort fit of the elastic around the bicep.

General Talk / Sonoma swell info
« on: December 20, 2013, 06:09:07 PM »
What am I looking for as per numbers on Swellinfo to know what is a good day and when should I stay home.  I've only been up to TC twice and both days were hook ups here so I never even took a look at the report.  I'm thinking of going Tuesday.  The report shows 1ft at 12sec.  That sounds pretty good to me but I've got another guy going with me for his first time and I don't want anything unexpected when we get there.

Anyone else planning on heading up Tuesday?

Places to Launch and Camp / Laguna de Santa Rosa
« on: October 31, 2013, 09:30:36 AM »
Anyone ever been in the laguna?  What is the area like.  From what I've been able to find online it's boat access only.  It seems as though you could launch from hwy 12, Occidental Rd, or Guernville Rd.  I've been checking it out on Google maps but haven't been able to get over there yet to see what kind of launch sites are available.

Lots of it appears to be choked up with grass that looks impassible according to the satellite photos.  I know the place is supposed to have crazy high mercury levels in the fish but I don't plan on eating any out of there anyway.  It would be sweet to have a place only 30 minutes or so from me to try and catch a few bass though.

Just trying to see if anyone has any personal info on the area.  I've Google researched it to death but really can't find anything worth while that specifically addresses the hunting or fishing in there.

General Talk / Wetsuit in Petaluma or Santa Rosa?
« on: October 25, 2013, 01:38:10 PM »
So my wife suddenly has to work on Sunday so my day with the boy at the Yakhopper event is out.  I have tomorrow to fish if I like though.  With winds at less than 5mph and a swell report of 3ft or less I'm thinking it's looking pretty good for tomorrow on the Sonoma Coast.

I'm going to make a mad dash this afternoon to try and find a wetsuit for my 10yr old.  He's about 5' tall and 110lbs.  I'm thinking that he'd be in the largest youth wetsuit or a small adult suit.  We're going to hit Petaluma Dive Supply (b/c it's closest) but where else would likely have a good selection of suits in our area?  If I can find one to fit him he'll be riding on the back of my Pro Angler in the morning for his first jigging trip.

If we can't find one he'll still be on the back of the PA tomorrow but we'll likely be on Lake Sonoma instead!

General Talk / Sushi?
« on: October 23, 2013, 08:54:35 PM »
I posted of pic of the smurfling fillets from my fish last weekend on one of the East coast forums that I'm still a member of.  One of the questions that came up was can you eat lingcod and or rockfish as sushi?  I have never heard of any one doing this but since I'm new to Cali I figured I would ask here!

Not sure I would try it as sushi or not, but it sure looked like some good fish to use as poke or ceviche!!!  Any one ever tried any of these dishes with ling or rockfish?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Livewell for bass tournaments
« on: October 16, 2013, 07:47:26 PM »
Sin Coast asked about my livewell setup that I use in the bass tournaments that Ive been fishing here in NorCal.

I have a 52qt cooler with two bubbler boxes on the front to help with aeration.  There is also a 500 gal/hr bilge pump hooked to a piece of PVC on the inside of the cooler that fills the cooler while aerating the water.  I carry a small motorcycle battery to power the bilge pump and the bubbler boxes run off their own "D" cell batteries.  When I catch a fish I put a culling clip on him and stick him in the well.  Then simply set the pump overboard and clip the alligator clamp to the battery.  Once I have enough water in the well I turn the pump off and power on the bubbler boxes.  During long days of fishing I can change out the water by simply leaving the bilge pump on and letting the over flow tubes on the front do their job.  They are routed to the scupper holes so that anything else in my rear tank well stays dry.

It has worked great so far.  I've kept 18lbs of bass alive all day in the well with no issues.  In hot weather I add ice periodically and always use Rejuvenade additive!

General Talk / Almost ready for the salt!
« on: October 14, 2013, 06:10:17 PM »
So after plenty of reading and research I think I'm just about ready to hit the salt for some rockfish and lings.  I'm an East coast boy that grew up bass fishing and inshore saltwater fishing for speckled trout, redfish, and flounder.  Over the years I managed to expand that and have caught tarpon, snapper, and grouper in the Florida Keys as well as salmon, halibut, and trout while living in Alaska.  Now that I'm here in California it's time to branch out a little more and try the lingcod and rockfish from the kayak!

I'm going to stick with my Shimano Calcutta 300D paired with a 7' Shimano Terremar medium heavy for now since it doesn't require any more investment at this time.

I just finished raiding the Outdoor Pro Shop and walked out with 3 packs of 5.5" Scampi in root beer, green slime, and glow.  I also picked up a 10pk of 6" white curl tailed grubs, a dozen 5" Big Hammers in Halloween, and two white shrimp fly rigs.  Ill get some squid later when I pick a day to head out.  For the time being I grabbed a bottle of squid flavored Pro Cure.  Also for jigs I grabbed ten 3oz and ten 4oz bullet heads with 8/0 hooks.  Hopefully twenty will be enough to get me started!!  Everyone said be prepared to lose a few but I wasn't real sure how many it would take to get me through a day of jigging.

I was able to get in on Clavey's sale of the Hydrus 3L paddling pants and ordered a Kokatat Tempest jacket to wear with it.  I've got several handheld portable submersible VHF radios, a compass, my GPS/fish finder combo, and of course a dry bag for the cell phone.  A PFD is a no brainer as well as an extra paddle.  I believe the only thing I still need to find is a pair of boots that are large enough for my size 14 foot as well as my socks and paddling pants!

Am I missing anything?  I'm hoping that we have a decent weather and swell forecast sometime during the next two weekends so I can get this thing rolling.  I know my Hobie Pro Angler isn't the greatest boat for this but I'm pretty sure ill be good out of TC and the launch looked very doable when I checked it out last weekend.

Is it obvious I'm excited about this new adventure? LOL

General Talk / Calico bass?
« on: October 09, 2013, 09:18:08 PM »
Supposedly the calico bass population runs from Baha all the way up to Washington.  Have any of you ever seen, caught, or heard of them along the Sonoma Coast?

I'd love to catch one if they're around!

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Clear Lake 10/5
« on: October 04, 2013, 05:47:30 PM »
I know it's last minute but I'm headed to Clear Lake in the morning if anyone is up for some bass fishing.  I'm hearing good things about the fall bite and some really nice sized fish schooled up into feeding packs!

General Talk / Fishing out of Bodega Bay
« on: September 15, 2013, 07:35:42 AM »
Looking to "get my feet wet" in the salt water here on the West coast.  I've been fishing from a Hobie Pro Angler for the last two years and don't have another boat at this time.  I'd love to be able to get out and chase lings and rockfish but don't have any interest in surf launching my PA.  The idea of turtling a boat this size is just not pleasant.  Is it possible to get out somewhere in the Bodega Bay area where a suf launch wouldn't be required?

What kind of distance would be required to find rockfish and ling?  I believe I've got all the tackle required, and I know I have all the appropriate safety gear.  I will have to pick up a wetsuit or dry suit before I make a go at it though.

I'm looking to buy another boat this spring.  I was looking at getting a second Pro Angler but if I take a liking to the salt here I may get a Hobie Outback instead just bc I believe it would be easier to surf launch it.  I keep seeing all the pics of rockfish and hearing of delicious fish tacos and would like to get my hands on some too!!

General Talk / Bethel Island question
« on: September 07, 2013, 07:36:47 PM »
Are there any launches around Bethel Island that I can get into before daylight?  Some place that has an iron ranger or some other way to pay before the launch officially opens?  Looking to hit the water in the morning before daylight to maximize my fishing time before the recreational guys get too thick!

I'm looking to hit the Delta Sunday morniń for some bass fishing.  This will be my first trip there since moving out here to Cali a few months ago.  Going to be launching somewhere down towards Bethel Island of anyone wants to join me.  I'm pretty open to different launches seeing as Ive never fished the area.  Will be getting down there before daylight and fishing till around 2pm or so.

You can get in touch with me here or text me at (904)412-4530

Well good sense prevailed finally.  Looks like the belly boat bass club from the other thread has decided to let me fish tomorrow!  I guess they decided to honor their own club by-laws and not change the rules to exclude me mid season.  Word is that I'll be allowed to fish the rest of the tournaments this year and then there will be a vote on whether or not to exclude kayaks from next years events once this season wraps up.

If any on you guys would like to join us for the next three events feel free!! It would be nice to have at least one person there as an ally!!! LOL

Hopefully I'll have a good report to put up in the Reports Section tomorrow afternoon!  I've never fished the North end of the lake by Putah Creek but I'm going to go give 'em hell anyway!!

So, I just moved to California in June.  I was very active in kayak tournaments back in Florida and fished both fresh and saltwater.  I was really looking forward to moving out here to NorCal and found a local bass club that allowed kayaks to fish.  They were a belly boat club here in Sonoma County that also allowed kick boats and kayaks.  So I built a livewell that conformed to the clubs rules and proceeded to enter there next tournament.  It was a night tournament on Lake Sonoma, a lake I had only fished one time before the event.  Upon arriving at the ramp and paying my entry fee I answered many questions about my 2012 Hobie Pro Angler 14.  Almost none of them had ever seen a Hobie mirage drive kayak before.  The general consensus was that it was a nice craft but that their kick boats were much more versatile.  I was the only kayak at the event but they had previously had kayakers fish with them.

I won the event.

So I was active on their forum posting reports and speaking of my anticipation of the next event being held this weekend at Lake Berryessa.  Tonight someone posted up a thread titled "Be Advised" which spoke of the clubs first rule.......

1.  All (club name removed) tournament fishing must be conducted from an inflatable float tube or kickboat (pontoon style) and kayaks. Tournament Anglers may not fish outside of their boats for any reason. Anglers must be floating in their boats while fishing. Anglers may not accept assistance from boats or other anglers to move about the body of water. Only fins and oars may power float tubes, kickboats and kayaks. The use of motors and sails is prohibited. Violation of this rule will result in Tournament disqualification.

They never actually named me so I inquired as to what the topic was about.  I had a feeling it was referring to me.  After emailing the club director I was informed that I was being disallowed to compete in their events due to the speed and distance the Mirage Drive provided me.  Apparently they don't really want kayaks competing as any kayak would have a speed and distance advantage over a kick boat.

So now I'm trying to find out what it would take to organize my own kayak bass fishing tournaments here in the Somoma County area as well as get a feel for how many folks would be interested.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Clear Lake 8/17
« on: August 18, 2013, 08:01:25 AM »
Spent the day throwing swimbaits on Clear Lake from my Hobie kayak with Evan.  Our best five would have been right at 20lbs.  I had two 8lbers roll on a wake bait and miss and lost a 6lber right at the net.  Guess that's fishing though!!  Next tournament is this coming Saturday on Lake Berryessa.  Lookin for a back to back win against these West Coast boys!!!
