The closer it is to the golden gate bridge the more dangerous the current is. Last weekend the current went from 0.2 to 1.9 mph in less than 20 mins on a not so big tides flip near Alcatraz.

I have not done it but usually the skin, head, and slime of fish tend to have a lot of bacteria and thats where the fishy smell comes from.
Just worried that the bacteria will slowly eats into the flesh, even in the fridge.

The GWS is truly a majestic creature.

Very cool video,
First shark was much like my dog who has hidden his bone...... keeps a close eye on it for about 5 mins and then looses interest.... however my dog rarely attacks and when he does he cannot do much damage as he is 16 weighs about 14 lbs and has missing teeth.

I have a friend that was part of the Nat Geo crew who did the jumping shark special that was in the Farlons..... he could not believe all the footage the editors cut as there were urchin divers going about there business some unaware many watching the sharks while they were working in the frames of the video.

I pretty much assume that if the water is wet and salty sharks are within their smell radius.   But still few attacks.   I think they really do not like confrontation unless it is a clear meal and easy for them.

I went directly to Kokatat dry suit (Hydrus 3 supernova angler) and never looked back. It has lifetime warranty and replaced my suit (zipper problem) hassle free.  I saw another one at REI this year for half of the price ($385) and haggled the price down to $300 for my dad.

I cut up those old foam crawl tiles for babies and use them as leader holders.
One thing I religiously do is to soak all leaders used that day in dish detergent to get rid of any bait or smear scent for salmon fishing.
But I found my unused leaders brought on the trip can get rusty from the salt moisture. Now I am going to get some WD40 on the tiles hoping it can cut down rust.

Thanks for the tips about hook sharpening.
My biggest concern is that all the hooks I used are gammy or Owner high carbon hooks. The sharpened point can get rust too easily anywhere near salty moisture. Is there something that we can soak a sponge in and stick the hooks in there after sharpening. I also like cutting edge better than needle point. Cutting edge points can still work after rust at the point but needle point will completely lost its penetration ability.

My dad used to soak his hooks in veggie oil but it is messy and can get rancid after a while.

WD-40 maybe ?

Also been taught by an old timer to soak files in a strong chlorine solution to dissolve metal particles from your tools
Just don’t soak em too long

I would recommend diluted hydrochloric acid if you can find it. Chlorine will oxidize but not dissolve metal.

There are several ways to secure the pontoons.

I really enjoyed your blog photos and videos. The Farallons trip looked amazing. That would be epic. I was once with a buddy on his TI crabbing outside the gate. One of the pontoon connections failed and the pontoon swung out wide. Watching him stretched out between kayak and pontoon trying to secure it back was like an old Charlie Chaplin film.

Bars, coffee and lots of water (6L if I fish until afternoon, 4L if only morning). I hate dehydration.

General Fishing Tips / Re: My New Favorite Salmon Lure

I also like this lure due to its rolling action and scent stuffing. A couple of questions below.
A few
Love cut plugs. A few more notes.
- the bite on this plug is due to action more than color, so if it doesn’t have the right action, you’re not getting bit
- leader stiffness and length affect action. Longer and flexible is better.
How long a leader and line rating do you recommend? I am using 4 ft and my line is pretty stiff.

- number of hooks and their size affect action. Smaller is better.
I am using 2 4/0 gama octopus hook. Is that too big?

- placement of hooks and other hardware used affect action. Less is better
I rigged up two ways on my two lures. One has the trailer hook one inch from the first and 3 inches on the second lure

- the way you stuff bait inside the plug affects action (don’t overstuff)

- modular lure to leader connection affects action. Tying the leader to the lure is better
- trolling speed is important. Test your speed
- carry spare rubber bands

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Is this fixable?
« on: August 31, 2022, 09:12:35 AM »
Hobie vantage seat broke at the back of the frame. I wonder if it is because I always raised the seat.
Haven't contacted Hobie yet but wonder if anyone else had similar issue before and how it was dealt with.

Thanks

I started using it this year and had some good results with it.
I used 30LB hard nylon monofilament/good bead chain and never had line twist issue.
The top hook was tied with an egg loop and the rubberband permanently lives there so no lost rubberband after a fish.

Hi Brad,
Sorry you lost the fish. How big was the blue hoochie you used? Blue dancer mini hoochie or regular 3.5inch hoochie?

My dad and I fished from 6 am to 4 PM and finally on the way back to RW we landed a nice 20LBer.

Very slow grind indeed.
