NRS farmer John wetsuit rash

Hi All,

I’ve noticed after going kayak fishing with my wetsuit I get this abrasion rash. I’m trying to figure out if I need to get a larger size wetsuit vs trying another brand (style). I can feel the seam stitching on the inside which I suspect is rubbing on the inside.

This is slightly minimized with body glide but still persists.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Pics attached

Dude that looks like allergic reaction.  Not  like a regular wetsuit rash...

Occasionally I get heat rash when I get too warm in my wetsuit during summer. It's hard to tell but looks very similar to your pictures. Were you very hot in your wetsuit?

Thanks all for the responses. @Moo, I wasn’t hotter than normal I suppose. I’m curious if y’all can fit a finger gap comfortably in your wetsuit in the leg area.

It’s pretty snug for me. Although I suspect it’s probably not too good if my suit is too loose as well in case I go in the drink.

Or get the wetsuit wet. they get more flexible wet.  If you feel the stitches on the seams  that suggests it's a cheapy wetsuit. Better suits all have taped seams. Try an NRS or and ONeil or body glove.  Or if $$ is no concern, go for a Patagonia with their patented fleecy-feely lining.

Yep, I suggest you invest in an angler drysuit like Kokatat.

Not a doctor but agree it looks like an allergic reaction.

I use a dry suit forever, but still have a couple farmer Johns I'll use for particularly adventurous trips, like big Sur, or Solo North Coast.

Also I suggested NRS and now see that's what you're using.  Formula's differ for neprene amongst mnfr's.  Study up a bit I bet you can find one that works for you.

+1 to skin reaction. This doesn’t look like chaffing.

It could be that you washed the suit in a detergent that didn’t get rinsed completely, so in the areas where the fabric is most tight and wet, there is maximum transfer of the detergent and contact with the skin.

I would put it in the washing machine without any detergent and let it run through a cycle with max extract, then air dry, and try again.
 

Don't use any detergents, just rinse in fresh water.  Try using some bicycle/yoga tights underneath.

  I had a similar rash on my stomach often at the end of the day, now I put a thin shirt layer under my wet suit and I use this stuff to wash.  has helped to prevent the rash. 
    Revivex also makes a rain jacket refresher that works pretty well.  Soak then run in the dryer for a little bit. Improved the waterproofing of my well loved top layer, extending the life of it.

I’ll give it a fresh wash, maybe get some seam tape.

If that doesn’t work it might be trial and error with larger suit / different suit and or a dry suit.

It might take some time to figure it out, but I’ll post if / when I do.

I also get wetsuit rash from my NRS, but not that bad. It's worse when it's warm out, so I was told and assume that it could be yeast or something that likes a warm moist environment. I did not have any problem over 2 days at Albion recently. I did spray my legs with Lotrimin before putting it on and I'm not sure if that was effective or if the cooler weather kept the rash away.
I just turn inside out and spray with water and dry it in the sun where it can get some UV. That seems to help a bit too.

It looks more infectious than allergic. MRSA is now endemic so ask them to culture it and dont take no for an answer. My situation was VRSA which went on for a couple of years of misery and ended in near sepsis in the ER and gruesome emergency surgery Original rash was very similar to yours
