Ahhhh man, JTF and Red on KAYAKS?!

Watch out, now.

I'm a possibility for next Saturday. I was going to go tomorrow also, but I got suckered into agreeing to go see Star Wars with my old lady and her kids.  :smt017

I may be out there also. Gold Toyota 4Runner and a Yellow OK Caper.

Depends on if the wind stays down or not.

There's reports of a few flatties being caught already on Fishsniffer.com.

There's a decent shad thread going on in the freshwater board of Fishsniffer...

Erik - getting bait in Bodega is hit or miss. There's been times when I've gotten all the shiners I needed in one cast from the Tides Wharf - and other times when it's taken hours just to scratch up a few smelt. I usually try Lucas Wharf, Tides Wharf, or Spud Point - with Tides Wharf usually being the most productive.

If I end up on the jetty I use both cooked shrimp and 4" & 5" FT's.

I hooked into two keeper lings from Doran yesterday, the other jetty should be better. I posted a report on PFIC.

I'm probably gonna try and score some shiners from The Tides then float around inside Bodega Harbor early Saturday morning.

If it's too windy or I can't get any bait I'm gonna fish one of the jettys.

I just gotta watch out for the salmon heads, luckily there's no real bite out of Bodega yet.  :smt019

I think he heard you the first time, E!  :smt003

I always thought a shinner was something you were apt to receive in a socker game.

I can't imagine too many strippers appreciating a good shinner! But what do I know?

There is that whole S&M thing...... :smt075  :smt079

General Talk / Anyone ever launch from Bodega Head?
« on: April 29, 2005, 12:56:48 PM »
At the foot of the jetty at Bodega Head is an area that's fairly open. You can "land" there and pull your kayak over the jetty, it normally wouldn't be that difficult. In fact some of the BASKers go there on high tides and wait for their chance to paddle through the opening.

However, there are two very large trees at the base of that jetty right now that were washed up a while ago, that would make the paddle through impossible and carrying the yak over pretty tough.

Not sure how long it'll take for those trees to wash away, if ever, but they make heading out on the jetty by foot a little easier.  :smt002

My buddy and I are gonna try real hard to make this one.

I busted up laughing when I saw the picture posted above, as I took that exact same picture this past Sunday on my way back from Ft. Bragg!

I agree with Erik. The best place to launch would be at Campbell Cove.

Mr (or Ms.) Whitey is definitely out there sometimes. A friend of mine from work said he saw a small GW (maybe 8' or 9') cruising INTO the harbor while he was fishing the Doran Jetty, and once while I was fishing the Bodega Head jetty the silence was shattered by a hundred sea lions all barking at once. I happened to have my binocs with me that day and saw dozens of sea lions shooting out of the water up onto the rocks just south of the jetty (Seal Rock). I never saw any signs of a shark, but I can only assume that's what spooked the sea lions so bad.

I've had "halibut like" strikes on swimbaits already this year, so maybe they're on their way in already. Two years ago I read reports of double digit hook-ups with double digit flatties all through the harbor. It was posted on a bass board and there were plenty of pictures to validate the catches. Some of the 'buts were well in excess of twenty pounds.

One of the deciding factors of me purchasing my 'yak. Those pics and the pics of my buddy holdin' some awesome rockies from Ft. Ross.

Anytime, E.
I'm sure we'll be out at Fort Ross on June 4th (the first week-end after the rockfish opener.) I Got two free camping nights with my Sonoma County Parks Pass so some buddys and I might even camp out that week-end.

Fish Friday afternoon, pack it up early, party it up at the camp site, then go first thing Saturday morning.

But putting on a cold wetsuit on a cold morning? Brrrrrr. I don't even like putting on wet, cold booties!  :smt009

I fish out of an 11' Caper also. I took it out of Ft. Ross during 12' swells my first time out in the ocean. I've never had a problem with it.

The only complaint I have about it is since it's a shorter 'yak it doesn't handle "chop" too well. A longer 'yak is long enough to cover two choppy waves, but the shorter yaks go down the side of one wave and the next one will break over its bow. Not sure how much sense that makes, but it's what I experienced in a choppy Tomales Bay.

Oh that and the whole great white thing..... :smt017
