Lindsie and I just drove to TI and back from Oakland with the first wave of cars.  The new span is a stunner!

What a trip...

Had a blast fishing and hanging with Dad  and the crew at the East Cape over the last week.  Fishing was generally slow for all.  Long rides for small tuna and a non-existent bottom fish bite allowed us to focus on Roosterfish and stick close to the ranch each day.

The Rancho Leonero crew is top notch, the staff felt more like friends than just the help.  Just the way we like it.  Thanks to Malolo (SBD) we were introduced to the manager Gary upon arriving, and he had a special treat for us.  The Hobie crew had been down for a photo shoot a little while back and left a couple Pro Angler 12s.  Gary has been hiding them in storage, reluctant to rent them out to anybody.  With a solid recommendation from Mr. White we were thrilled to have the chance to fish these awesome fishing machines.

Lots of great memories were made, and we have a few new campfire stories to tell.

On to the pics!

Dad and I both connected with our first Roosters from the kayak.

These fish are MAGIC!

HOOKUPS!

Caballito, the bait of choice for big gallos.

Glassy mornings...

led to breezy afternoons.

Which were spent wisely...

We toured the grounds and stayed in three different rooms...

Veinte was my favorite.

Lots of things live in the roof.  Heard a very funny story about a couple who did not like seeing bugs run across the floor of their room.  So they brought down bug bombs on their next trip, set one off and returned to millions of dead bugs completely covering the entire room.

Night fishing with friends was one of the highlights for me.  Huge lightning storms passed over the Sea of Cortez a couple of nights.

Puffer

That's a moray! or EEEEELLLLLL!!!!!

The cats of the Ranch.  Dad noticed how they each had their own territory staked out.

The Queen, Marcelena and her backwards paw. Lives in and around the office.

Lucky runs the bar area and dining patio.  Not a big fan of lettuce, tuna is preferred.

Blackie. He owns the main fountain and the hermit crabs living in it.

Did not get the name of these two young'ns, but they hang around the "Man Wing."

Taco the Mexican Hairless.  Not your typical Baja dog that we love so much, this guy is pampered. Washed and oiled daily.  He was a real character.

This place has it all, even mushroom hunting.

DoDo indicator.

The neighbors were friendly...

The last sunset was bittersweet..

Anyone up for an NCKA league?  I know there has been some interest in the past, let's do it!  Always more fun to play with people you know.  I like the ESPN format the best, but up for whatever.  Just thought I would get the ball rolling with pitchers and catchers reporting soon.

Northern Boy? PK?  BabyMan?  You out there?

Tonight I will be working the door and helping my "besties" with the grand opening of their bar in uptown Oakland.  Come by and say hello! Happy hour from 4-8pm, then an opening party from 8-2am.

Bar 355: 355 19th St. Oakland

Via the Oakland Tribune:

Bar 355

On Wednesday, Travis Dutton and Patrick Lynch couldn't remember the last time they had a full night's sleep. Seven months ago they decided to transform an abandoned bar on 19th Street into a lounge that mingles Las Vegas with Hollywood.

"And finally Friday's the big day," he said, meaning today. Happy hour starts at 4 p.m.

"How did I get involved in this? Purely accidentally," Lynch said.

He was planning to open a restaurant but the idea fell through. One day he asked Dutton, a 7-year-veteran of the Radio bar, if he ever thought of opening his own place.

"Yeah, all the time," Dutton responded.

"The rest is ... history," Dutton said, stacking bottles of vodka, tequila and gin with only 48 hours remaining.

The contents of the bottles will go into classic standards like the aviation, sidecar, Manhattan and martinis.

"Drinks that never really go out of style," Dutton said. "And obviously we're going to make our own drinks as well."

The last time someone ordered anything there, the space was called Softnotes Restaurant and Lounge. (Bar 355 plans to offer food in the future.)

The previous operators abandoned the lounge a couple years ago, leaving almost everything behind.

"The only thing they took was two flat-screen TVs," Lynch said.

The walls were glossy white and mustard yellow.

"It was hideous," Lynch recalled.

The walls are now papered in gold and royal blue. The newly lacquered bar shines under retro lamps in what Lynch said was the Hollywood Regency style. There is a nook at one end of the three-tiered room and a stage framed by gold curtains at the other. Gilded mirrors are plentiful.

Think neo-noir: the Slow Club in David Lynch's "Blue Velvet."

Outside a workman was installing a lamp that will hang in a shallow recess in the faux lava rock facade. Overhead, a sign bearing the name Mr. B's stands like a beacon from some distant chapter in Oakland's downtown history. The sign is topped by an orb painted with the words "Don's," dating back to when the lounge was Big Don's Cactus Room. Someone else took over and changed the name to Big Al's Cactus Room.

Eventually the exterior will give way to city plans for sprucing everything up. But for now, the orb revolves.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Steelhead School
« on: February 05, 2010, 12:55:35 PM »
Dad and I travelled to the far reaches of the state for an initiation to big river steelheading.  We did a lot of watching and learning, since we had only fished for salmon on the Smith and this was a whole new game.

Drift boat after drift boat filled with seasoned guides and expectant anglers marched past as we studied each oar stroke and every plunk of bait.  We watched for where they fished, where they didn't, and figured out the boat etiquette for a few somewhat crowded holes.  We spent every hour of light on the water for two and a half days and only saw our hotel in the light as we checked out.

Spent the weekend fishing the Gumdrop Seamount with Dad (otobepelagic), Uncle Russ, and a few good friends. The run from Bodega was long with flat seas and plenty of entertainment.  Pods of dolphin chasing us down and playing in the boat wake, whales throwing their massive bodies completely out of the water, and hundreds of sea lions porpoising while racing towards the blue water.

Got to the numbers that had produced for some friends the previous day to find no signs of life but a good break.  Set the spread and pretty soon after we started off with a double of nice grade fish.  The fish are definitely scattered, long lulls between fish but when they arrived it was chaos.  Had some trouble getting more than one to stick in the morning, but after I did some playing around with the spread and Uncle Skipper found the honey hole we had triples, a quad, and even a quint.

The final tally was 16.  We couldn't believe the quality of the fish, most of the fish were in the low 20's and few tapped out around the 30 mark, only one under 15.  Unreal, this could be an epic year for tuna.

The seas turned on us on the run home, and it was a sloppy but euphoric ride back.  It doesn't look like we will be able to get back out for awhile, but if anyone can most of our fish came at 28 over 27.

     Way too much fun!

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Russian drift 3-29
« on: March 29, 2009, 09:27:06 PM »
Drifted from Healdsburg to Forestville with Ravensblack today.  The wind had woken up before we had and was blowing downstream, rarely have I had to drag a paddle in the river to slow down my drift but this morning it happened more than once.

Early in our drift we came to a popular spot that 99% of the time is fished by the same guy who "makes every cast count."  He was not there today.

About half way through the run my offering is slammed and the fight is on!  Flashbacks of heartbreak from less than a week ago cloud my thoughts, while a hot little buck rips line and puts on an aerial display.  When he would jump he would straighten out, no violent head shaking.  He had some style, big overhead arcs with clean entries... Played him out and beached him for a "short" photo op (hehe, thanks Craig!) and quick release.

Enjoyed the rest of the drift watching the osprey show, and even flushed out a pair of cock pheasant in the frog water above redwood.  It has been a tough year on the Russian but it always seems to make your drift worthwhile, a real jewel right in our backyard to boot.

Met up with the local hero (hydrospider) at Braitos marina on Sunday for a little change of pace.  Could not have picked a better day to be on the water, weather was PERFECT.  We made our way out of the marina and worked a stretch that was rumored to be producing some big fish, but our various offerings were scoffed at while our agents marched through unscathed, .  Terry did show me some spots that if we get some rain look like Kayak Heaven.

With no action we decided to load up and move to a spot that has always been good to us in the past.  Ah yes "the park" was calling...   It took awhile to find them, hydrospider picked one up then another, while I rode the skunk train for at least another hour or so.  The hope was that as the sun set the bite would improve, and it did.

We proceeded to burn through 4 dozen or so agents, with Standard Issues, doubles, ferocious takedowns, and fights that had us spinning circles.  These fish were tough!

One fish made my hands shake for awhile...
