Congrats and thanks for the report.  I was in awe of your Eddyline and Tsuri's Stealth, but really like the Stealth.  My Old Town barge does what I want it to but I like the idea of being a missile in the water.  :smt001

ROCKFISH. (The 60 second musical fishing report)

https://youtu.be/NOeHb57oL80?si=M7Fhzt231b7LAHoc

It took me a little over two weeks to finally post on this thread and in that time I made ANOTHER trip to the Cape with Eric.  So you know, retired music professor, ex-rock-n-roll guy ...  Here's my musical rendition of two Rockfish expeditions at the Cape with Eric, Terry (on the 22nd) and Tom (on the 31st)

Turn it up really loud.  And use BIG speakers or good headphones.

Rock on angling dudes and dudettes.  :smt044

Late but better than never...Got to the ramp at 7am and met Mark and Tsuri.  Great putting names and faces with logins.  After finally loading up my barge and being impressed with the missile-like Eddyline and Stealth that the fellas were paddling, Kevin comes down.  With a point, he says "head straight for the cove then towards the dam".  I'm trolling an orange wedding ring and pink hoochie; lots of drive-bys and one dink released.  I catch up with Mark and Tsuri and lots of action but no keeper for me yet.  Think my first keeper stayed on around 8am then was steady 'til my limit at 11am.

Around 9am, Mark gave me some tuna corn and his "Kokanee killer" purple hoochie and I headed north around the point to finish off my last two fish.  All told, 5 keepers, 9 released dinks and tons of spit outs and drive-bys.

Got to talk briefly with Kyle, see Kevin again and meet Mark and Michael.  Epic day.

Tsuri and Mark, I'll be in touch soon and hope to join you in the salt!

Hi everyone,
Thinking of getting out this week some where for Halibut and or Rockfish.
Weather actually looks reasonable this next week.

Thinking of Doran of maybe Ft Ross or ???

Might even do Half Moon Bay??? Looking for a buddy or two as I dont like going out in Big Blue alone.

Could do anytime this week.
Troy

I might be able to Doran on Friday.

Thanks Tsuri.  I'm always up for a koke run and wanna learn Tahoe.  BB doesn't like me much for kokes but I keep at it!

Bambu Slicer is easy and straight forward to use with plenty of options to get really advanced with the control should you decide you want to.

The print profiles all work right out of the box and I haven't found the need to tune anything to get acceptable prints, though I'm sure if I wanted to I could do a deep dive and get slightly improved results.

If you're looking at designing your own custom prints you'll have to figure out what CAD or 3D modeling software you'd like to use, Blender being a decent open source free option. There's also I believe a free version of Fusion360 if you want something a little more focused on industrial design. Really any 3D software should be able to kick out .STL models that can be fed into the slicer for a 3D printer, it just depends on what works for you. I primarily use Cinema4D since that's what I'm already familiar with.

One thing I would suggest budgeting for is a filament dryer. The most common filaments used in FDM printing are all hygroscopic (absorb water from the air) and that can negatively effect print quality, sometimes to the point of failure. I use https://www.amazon.com/Official%E3%80%913D-Filament-Adjustable-Temperature-Compatible/dp/B0BKFMZQHB?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&psc=1&smid=APCUBABSTSRDE since it was one of the few dryers that seemed like it cycled air, though there are lots of options out there.

Do you use an enclosure?

Sweet, cool video and really good information there.  With a little planning, should be plenty durable for all the little projects I have in mind.  Thanks for sharing this!

+1!

The Prusa orange looks a lot like my Old Town too =)

I've been researching 3D printers to make some of the parts my crazy head comes up with in the middle of the night.  3D printing is a huge topic so I'll attempt to ask as many specifics as I can.  I'm hoping those of you with a printer and/or experience will chime in.

1. Do I need a 3D printer?  Seems I can download design software and send my designs to a print service, or even to one of you guys (as I've seen in other posts)
2. FDA or SLA printer?  Appears that an FDA is the way to go.
2a. Side question: SLA = resin?
3. Are the various materials strong enough for most uses on a kayak?  PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA vs RESIN?
4. Any recommendations on a printer?  I'm looking at one of the Bambu lines: https://us.store.bambulab.com/collections/3d-printer

I'm willing to spend up to $400 if necessary.

I've found numerous creators that have posted designs for various kayak parts for free.  As stated in other posts, sometimes it appears it's just easier and less expensive to pay for a part, so I'm not really thinking about re-inventing the wheel.  The printer would be more for filling in engineering gaps for my zany ideas, and some fun stuff too.

I have lots more questions but figure this is a good starting point.  Maybe we could start a page that has links to the various creators we know of online, or maybe just a page for our own designs.

Smittle Creek launch again?  Thinking of heading out there tomorrow.

What model kayak is that?

General Talk / Re: Pedals for VanHunks Sauger
« on: July 16, 2024, 10:09:35 AM »
That looks very similar to my Pelican branded drive. How long is your kayak?

You can loosen the drive cables a 1/4 turn or so and they will get easier to pedal, but won't necessarily make you go any faster unless you pedal faster.

Yak is 12.5", it's actually a tandem

I would hit it with some anti grease and a dry lubricant like hobie suggests.

Hit these moving parts Ive highlighted, I have an older v2 with similar fins I think you have turbos already. But you could check there is an amazon seller selling that model of fin in turbo (without the masts). You should be going faster then 1mph, I can push my outback 3mph pretty easily with mine.

Would you mind measuring your turbo fins, so I can check length on mine?

I'm going to lengthen the stride, apply the dry lube and see about a slight loosening of the cables.  I think the stride length is the biggest issue.

General Talk / Pedals for VanHunks Sauger
« on: July 15, 2024, 03:11:51 PM »
I purchased a VanHunks Sauger a while ago and have been struggling to make the pedals work efficiently.  From what I've read, they seem to be the same as the first generation Hobie pedals.  I can barely get the kayak up to 1mph in still water....any wind or current and I'm barely moving forward.

There are some numbers on the drive that seem to indicate that they can be adjusted.

Anyone have experience with these, or "first" gen Hobie pedals?
