General Talk / Lake Berryessa Turnover
« on: December 01, 2024, 05:40:00 AM »
It looks like the turnover has happened. I’m going to try it today. I wonder how long it’ll take for the bite to recover.

General Talk / Berryessa Mussel Inspection
« on: November 28, 2024, 05:44:09 PM »
So the new inspection program started the 25th. Motor boats must do a 30 day quarantine or pay for a hot water decontamination. Fishing kayaks with a motor must be inspected. Other kayaks and paddle boards are recommended to get the free inspection unless directed to do it by the staff. I’m not sure what the pass fail is for a fishing kayak with a motor. Are they looking for contamination in the cooling water inlets? Are they looking for moisture inside a sit on kayak? I wish they explained what it was they were looking for.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / HMB Opening Day Limit
« on: November 03, 2024, 05:06:00 AM »
This was my first time crabbing on opening day. The wind report had me worried that I wouldn’t be able to go, but I decided to make the trip and hope it was calmer than the forecast. I arrived at 5:30 and it was dead calm. I headed out before daylight hoping the wind wouldn’t arrive before I had a decent amount of time to get some crab. As it turned out it was a beautiful day. It was so calm that the surface of the water was smooth. The wind didn’t pick up until about 1:00 but by that time I had my limit. I dropped my nets at three waypoints I have from past trips. The first pull came up with two crabs about an inch and a half wide. The second pull got me three crabs about three inches wide. Then I got several empty pulls. I heard someone on the radio say they got a nice one at fifty feet so I left my net at that depth even though it had come up empty for me. I moved my other two to that area in the hope that it would get better. Around the time the tide slacked off I pulled up one with four keepers of good size. Then every pull had at least one keeper until I got my limit. The last pulls of the day all had undersize only. That was around 1:00 and the wind was starting to pick up. According to Willy Weather real time wind it was blowing around 12-13 mph, so not horrible but it did make the paddle in more difficult. All the crabs were bigger than the gauge and some were nice jumbos. All in all it was a great first time opening day.  :smt007

Places to Launch and Camp / Overnight camping near pillar point?
« on: October 31, 2024, 10:19:21 AM »
I’d like to sleep in my vehicle Friday night and go crabbing Saturday. Since we can’t use the harbor parking lot anymore I’m wondering if there’s any options nearby.  :smt006

General Fishing Tips / Fishing Albion
« on: August 25, 2024, 08:16:25 AM »
I’ve only fished Albion a few times. I’d like to give it a try if conditions cooperate sometime before the season ends. I don’t know if the 20 fathom line is so limiting that it will create a problem or are there still decent spots open to fishing from a kayak. Does anyone have advice or recommendations on fishing that area with the new restrictions in place? Thanks

Places to Launch and Camp / Good Kayak Ocean Fishing With A Launch Ramp
« on: December 06, 2023, 12:01:13 PM »
Albion is one I can think of. Pillar Point and Doran both have launch ramps but I’ve never heard anything good about the rockfish fishing there. Any suggestions?

Introductions / Reintroduction
« on: November 29, 2023, 10:15:41 PM »
Ever since Covid had us banned from parking out of our county I hadn’t gone fishing until this September. I’m getting my gear back in order and looking forward to some fall trout fishing. I hope everyone has been catching lots of fish. It’s good to be back on the water.

I just finished setting up a Wilderness Radar 115 electric kayak for my wife. I took it out on a shakedown cruise up at Lake Berryessa. My son was in my electric Radar 135. We launched at Putah Creek Campground around 8:30. It was windier than the forecast predicted so we headed over to Pope Creek to get some calmer water. We didn’t have any luck toplining cast masters in so we decided to try our new Cal Kellog version of a hybrid leadcore setup. I let out the 50ft of top shot, all three colors of leadcore and another 100 ft of braid and trolled out and turned towards Putah Creek. According to Cal I was down to 30-35 feet. I hooked a fish and netted a small bass. When we trolled into Putah Creek I hooked another fish on a Kokanee lure but lost it at the net. Guessing from the spots it was a small spotted bass. I don’t know how it stayed on that long though as neither piece of corn was even dented. I am really happy with both of my Wilderness Radar kayaks. I think I will limit my summertime trips to the waterski lakes. I’m just not into what passes for music these days being blasted by the kids. It was $15 for the day use fee and the gate isn’t locked so you can enter as early as you want to fish. I’ll be back up there this fall.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Garmen lakevu G3 maps question
« on: April 07, 2021, 07:01:28 PM »
Does anyone own this map. The photo on the website seems to show a coverage area that extends into the ocean. My old navionics maps cover lakes and near shore ocean. Everything I’ve read about the lakevu does not mention anything but lakes. So is the image showing ocean coverage accurate? Thanks.
