I agreed to help one of the PhD candidates here at UCSC.

She's an anthropologist studying the diet and lifestyle of our coastal Ohlone indians.  She needs samples of "modern" fish to compare with the skeletal remains she finds in the middens (garbage heaps) along the SC and SM coast.

I secured a few perch for her last week with the derby, but she neesd a lot of different speicies .  Testing the fat/protein content of various fish in her studies of these ancient communities.

so, I'm asking for help form the brothers and sisters of NCKA!

Some fish she just needs a flesh sample, 2 oz, with the skin attached.

Some fish she needs the whole thing, and she's asking for 2 or 3 of each species for her study.

So if you want to help, below is a list of flesh samples and whole fish she wants.  Put into a baggie, seal, label and freeze it.  Post what you got below.  We can arrange pick-up or shipping on dry ice between us.

I will update this list with check marks as I collect the samples.  should keep going through summer unless we are really lucky, especially with the wierd ones, like the pricklebacks and the sticklbacks....

tyhaks in advance for any asisstance on this one!

Allen

ps NCKA  will get attribution in her thesis ....

Cristie’s Fish Wish List

Flesh samples (I could use 2-3 of each species if you get them).  I only need the 2oz worth, and fishermen can keep the rest!  Leave skin on the flesh samples if possible.

Check mark     Means we have sufficient samples of this species:

Rainbow surfperch
Black surfperch      √
Walleye surfperch
Pile surfperch
Barred surfperch
Striped surfperch   √
Shiner surfperch
Calico Surfperch     √

Cabezon
California halibut
Pacific sanddab

Flesh and skeleton (or in other words, I need the whole fish, and 2-3 of each would be great if possible):

Rubberlip surfperch
White surfperch

Plainfin midshipman
Topsmelt
Jacksmelt

Monkeyface prickleback
Rock prickleback
Black prickleback
(other prickleback?)

Threespine stickleback

Freshwater
Sacramento sucker
Sacramento perch

Very cool!!

I am sure the smelt will be easy to come by...saw some today actually following my bait around...if you have not gotten any by the next time I am out I will jig up a few and throw them in the freezer.

If/when I get a cabezon or flattie I will be happy to contribute as well.

The other species....haven't even heard of some of them!!

Jim

thank goodness the whole fish are the less desirable ones. I am sure we'll be able to hook her up.

I still have some Jacksmelts in my freezer which I plan to use for baits.  Let me know if she want them now or wait til next month for a fresher ones.

I'd be happy to help - especially since some of these aren't big biters.  :)

Will you be updating the list?  I'd hate to go shot a stringer full of different perch & find out that they're no longer needed.

Sending you a PM now scallen!

Yes, as I receive notification of fish collected, I will put a check mark next to it on the original list above, so we don't get reduntant.

thanks Fuzz, got your PM, you are the man, esp with those obscure reefies that we only ever catch by sheer chance.

allen, did you check with the guys on pierfishing.com?  a lot of those fish are more likely to be caught from shore/pier than from a kayak.  they could probably get some of the more difficult out of the way.

i might be able to help you with the sacramento perch and sucker depending on my schedule.

Thanks Ben.  those Sac fish would be great if you happen to get a few!

No bias, and I know there's a lotta good guys there, but I don't go to pierfishing.com. never have.  It wouldn't feel right just to "drop in" and start asking for favors.  I'd feel like a carpetbagger, LOL.

No problem asking for favors here, though.  NCKA's my peeps!
