The kayak launch area and all the parking on that side of the marina is currently off limits while they are doing construction. There is public parking in a gravel lot on the the other side by the docks. More info here - https://www.ssf.net/departments/parks-recreation/parks-recreation-facility-projects/oyster-point-2c

Water was milk chocolate and 54 degrees. Very little bait or bird activity and no biters.

General Talk / OP Kayak incident 6-1
« on: June 02, 2023, 07:58:37 AM »
Anyone have any information on the kayak rescue at Oyster Point yesterday? Saw this posted on Coastside. Good work to the AI/TI kayaker on the rescue and catch!

Coastside report:
"I was at Oyster today. When I arrive there were all kinds of SSFPD cars and SSF fire trucks. One the police asked if I had binocs. Yes, I do. Turned out a kayak fisherman radioed for help just outside the breakwater and taking in water. A passer -by large sailing trimaran kayak picked up the guy and transferred him to a more stable real boat. The trimaran kayak skipper was the hero. The Trimaran had a large butt on board. BTW, 4 butts to 17# were landed by the pier anglers using fresh caught jacksmelts"

I'm about done processing what I want to keep from saturday's spawn at Elephant Rock -- I should have 1 to 2 gallons if you missed out and want some. They've been kept in a salted ice slurry so they are in good shape, but it would be best to get them today/this evening. Outer sunset in SF. Let me know.

General Talk / Vitamin deficiency
« on: January 04, 2023, 12:11:04 PM »
Interesting read in the LA Times and maybe elsewhere -- seems many returning salmon have a low vitamin B1 deficiency that is impacting survival rate among the fry. Theory is that they are feeding more and more on anchovies and less on other food sources -- anchovies are high in a component that breaksdown the B1 in their bodies and ultimately the eggs.

Not mine, but these are great on the kayak. Basically the same size as the Scotty lake troller, but with a real clutch/brake system. I run a 6lb ball on mine without any problem and it could handle more weight if I needed it.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Rockaway 8/6
« on: August 07, 2022, 08:11:04 AM »
TL/DR: Lost one boatside, others landed theirs. Some never hooked up.

Launched in really nice conditions. Headed straight out to 70' of water and worked south into a mild SW wind. There was a bit of a bite from 8 to 9 in around 90' of water - saw a few nice fish landed - slow pick otherwise.

I had a leader break at the knot when an at least decent/better than decent fish made a hard dive boat side. It pinned my rod to the kayak on the dive and then just popped. The fish had pulled drag earlier in the fight, but I'll check the reel - -maybe the drag is getting a little sticky. 40lb flouro snapped just below the double surgeon's knot I use to make a loop. At least I kept my slingblade. Tied up a new blue hoochie rig and had another takedown that didn't stick and that was it for action.

Worked that area hard, then trolled almost down to egg rock for nada. Party boats working the area were getting a steady pick, but nothing lights out. Lines in outside Rockaway at 5:50 and got off the water at 2:20. Fished from 30' to 90' of water. My hookups came at 35' OTW - heard fish caught from 25' to 45'. Saw a nice limit of upper teen fish and several trout as well.

Brad

An interesting read from the BBC - the recipe at the end sounds pretty tasty as well.

For Sale / Free - insulated coolers
« on: May 19, 2022, 10:08:40 AM »
These came through NCKA a few years ago and work great as a fish cooler on the kayak. Time to pass them on or toss them out. They fit nicely in a Revo 13’s back well for a size reference. Available in the outer sunset of SF.

Cheers

General Talk / Buck's Landing
« on: January 13, 2022, 11:39:15 AM »
What's the scoop on Buck's Landing as a launch for accessing San Pablo Bay? The winter talk of chasing dino's has me looking at options (if I ever get a break to head out).

Does it have mudwalk potential or will the creek hold water throughout the tides? Is there still public access?

I found some old hook-ups and reports, but they're all 10+ years old so I didn't know if it was still a viable launch.

Cheers,
Brad

General Talk / Hoop nets available
« on: November 02, 2021, 03:02:58 PM »
For those that need some hoop nets for crabbing - Gus' Discount Tackle in San Francisco has quite a few in stock. The one with the heavier rings and netting was $40 w/ harness and rope (floating), the lighter weight danielson ring was $30 or $35.

Gus' is on Balboa in the Outer Richmond district. Stop in and chat with Steph for a bit and pick up some hoops.

Brad

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Ft. Baker/Sausalito
« on: October 09, 2021, 09:37:21 PM »
Wanted to chase salmon again, but I'm toast after today's effort. So I'll be launching Ft. Baker in the morning and will ride the tide in and back out bounce balling for halibut and watching the airshow in the afternoon. The California Dawn had over a fish a rod today fishing the bay.

Cheers,
Brad
