Bought new six months ago, used about four times. No box, works great. $380 obo. Located in Pacifica CA

New to kayak fishing (awesome sport!) and well, ocean fishing in general. My prior experience in the big blue consists of going on charter boats and renting a rod and buying the boat's tackle setup for the day.

I'm finding that going from charter boats with helpful deckhands to trying to figure rigging setups yourself for certain species while on a kayak is quite a leap. Wondering if there's any websites out there (ideally with an emphasis on bay area waters) that can serve as a primer for rigging up for certain species. Right now, I've just been using rock fish dropper rigs with a piece of squid on the hook, hoping for anything really.

Looking for something like... what I should have on my pole for lingcod on sunny days, halibut on overcast days in a little rougher water, etc.

 

Last I read through CDFW's fishing regulation book (15 years ago or so), I got the impression that you should at least complete one semester of law school before doing so. I've tried to take note of changes year to year since then, but I think I should just read it again.

Is it still written in a quasi-legalese style? Are there any good sites/books/apps that summarize the regs for us?

I use Tapatalk to browse forums I frequently visit when on my phone. I've noticed that it seems on NCKA, half the posts are empty. I can see a thread of posts, but only a few have content.

Just got off the phone from purchasing my first kayak (2020 Hobie Outback in camo) and I'm pumped!

I'm a DIYer, and I already see doors opening for new creations... albeit, I'm new to the world of watertight, PVC, and pool floaties.

Generally speaking, what do people use for adhesives in kayaks for things like mounting battery boxes, etc? Do people generally try to use anchor points instead of adhesives?

I'm a big fan of Locktite PL glue, and use it for practically everything around the house from sticking and sealing things. Not sure if I should apply the same philosophy with a kayak, however.

Looking for some tips here before going out on my first ocean trip.

How do NCKA members generally bring big fish onto their kayaks? Net, Gaff, Kage? I was considering going the Kage route (I've read the discussions regarding CDFW's interpretation), but having second thoughts as I'd like to keep bleeding minimal as to not attract sharks. Would net + brain bonk be the way to go to keep blood down?

Thinking about getting my first kayak (looking at a Hobie Outback or revo, trying out both soon), and I'm starting to give a little more thought to color for safety.

I've read a few scattered threads on the subject on various forums, but color of the kayak typically wasn't the focal point.

I was originally interested in Camo so I could potentially use my kayak for duck hunting too, but realize that may be a bad idea if I'm going to use it 95% of the time in the ocean. I've also read a few topics that mentioned camo is an excellent color that stands out in the ocean, which I find a bit hard to believe. But I suppose if the water isn't an emerald green like a lake, maybe it does do well?

My main concerns are: boats seeing me, USCG seeing me, and (I know this probably will get a laugh) sharks seeing me.

From what I can tell from limited reseach, it seems like orange/yellow stands out quickest for boaters and USCG, and may also attract big fish (landlord?).

It seems like white may not be the best since it has potential to look like a white cap.

Any thoughts on how camo performs with regard to visibility in ocean and from the air? Would it be a reasonable safety measure to get camo but make sure you're sporting a bright yellow/orange PFD, hat, and flag?

I really like Hobie's Camo and Dune (white), but if it's at the expense of safety, I'll gladly turn another direction.

Hey all, new to the forum... Looks like this is a really great community.

Some background, moved to Pacifica a few years ago and have been surf fishing pretty regularly,and I'm starting to get a bit jealous of seeing all the kayakers out here pulling up massive Lings, Halibut, salmon, and crab! Just seems way more productive than shore fishing (I usually get skunked).

I've never owned a kayak and have only rented one a couple times in my life... once in a lake and another just paddling around pillar point harbor. I'd love to launch out of Linda Mar since it's close to where I live.

I'm pretty fit so I don't think I'd have much of an issue with a kayak. I've set aside about $700 to take training courses (basics, ocean kayaking, self rescue) and will definitely do all that before buying a Hobie. Once purchased, I'd take it out on the lake a few times before hitting the ocean.

I think I'm pretty set on a Hobie because of the peddle propolsion. Can anyone recommend a model, year, and configuration for primarily fishing out of Pacifica beaches, such as Linda Mar, Rockaway, Sharp Park? Although I'm sure when I get into it, I'll be trying to go everywhere.

I've done some reading, and it looks like the flip up peddle propolsion would be key for this type of fishing, but it seems like it only works on the new 2020 models which take on more water in the front? I've also been told by a friend that he's heard the peddle propolsion mimics seals and attracts great whites... any truth to that?

I'm sure there's lots of nuances to choosing a Hobie, and I'm trying to get the quick lowdown on models/configurations I should be considering.
