Hi,

Most of the time, when I fish in the ocean, I just look at swell height and period.  I typically target 3-4 ft at 8-10 sec which is my comfort range.  Recently I notice swell energy too but haven't really compared it so I don't know how it affects fishing from a kayak.

For instance, take the following two days...which is better for fishing from a kayak
Day 1) 3.4 ft @ 13 sec., swell energy = 400 KJ
Day 2) 4.7 ft @ 6.4 sec., swell energy = 165 KJ

Thanks

General Fishing Tips / Fishing with two rods at the same time
« on: April 10, 2021, 08:48:29 AM »
Hi All. I sometimes see kayakers fish with two rods at the same time in the ocean. I can’t find the regs that state when this is ok or when it’s not. The second rod stamp seems like it is only for inland fishing. So when is this allowed in California? Thanks

Safety First / HMB sea conditions Saturday 12/5/20
« on: December 06, 2020, 05:30:43 PM »
Hi I was wondering if anyone went out of HMB on Saturday? My friend and I went out and according to weather
/swell data it was supposed to be 5 ft @11 sec. winds were 2-3 mph offshore. However when we left the marina the swells were huge and then we were able to see that they were breaking at the reefs. Was the data wrong cause I didn’t understand why the conditions were so rough. I thought we were going to capsize. I also heard in the vhf that some other kayakers were surprised by the swells too. What am I not understanding by the data? Thanks

« on: October 05, 2019, 09:55:20 PM »
Hi all. I picked up a new 2019 Revo for my nephew to fish with me. They are discounting most of the 2019 line Hobies at 20% off. Their demos are also on sale. Disclaimer: I do not work for CCK.

Safety First / Got to practice my rescue skills today
« on: October 05, 2019, 09:25:29 PM »
I was fishing at shadow cliff today in my kayak. A young girl, 16ish,fell off her paddle board and she couldn’t get back on.  I went over and put her board between her and my kayak and pulled her back on her board. She was looked pretty tired from her ordeal.  I asked her if she wanted me to tow her back to the launch but she said she was ok. I kinda let her go but trailed close by until she got back to the launch. She didn’t have a life jacket on and the board seem really big for her. I asked her if she knew how to swim and she said yes but she didn’t seem very convincing. Glad things was fine and happy that rescue videos really worked.

CA Regulations / Giving or receiving game birds?
« on: December 27, 2018, 11:12:06 PM »
Hi all,

Today I was coming in from fishing and loading my things in my car when I started talking to a duck hunter returning from his day. The person was super nice and friendly. After talking for a while, he asked me if I wanted some ducks as his freezer still has ducks.

I wanted to take them but I didn’t know if that was legal? I didn’t know so I politely said no thank you. This place is frequently visited by DFG so I didn’t want to take a chance. I don’t have a hunting license nor do I even know what species are allowed or not.

Does anyone know if it would have been legal for me to accept them?

Thanks.

General Talk / How to dress for the ocean
« on: September 18, 2018, 12:01:00 AM »
Hi,  I’ve only kayak fished in the delta, local lakes and reservoirs.  I usually just wear shorts and a tee shirt and of course a PFD.  I am thinking about possibly joining some NCKA members in the ocean some day and don’t know how to dress for kayak fishing in the ocean. What base layers, outer layers, etc. should I wear? thx.

Hobie Kayaks / Hobie md180 version question
« on: August 15, 2018, 09:53:36 AM »
Hi,

I am looking at some Hobie Outbacks (new and used) that have the md180 drives.  From this forum, it seems that there are 3 versions of this drive already.  How can I determine which version drive it is by looking at it?

Thanks.

Places to Launch and Camp / Freeport Marina kayak launch???
« on: August 14, 2018, 08:39:26 PM »
Hi, I was wondering if you can launch a kayak from Freeport marina?  I search the ncka launch site category and couldn’t find anything. Also there doesn’t seem to be a website for freeport marina. Or does anyone know the closest place to launch to fish Freeport in a yak?

Native Watercraft / Titan 12 in the ocean???
« on: August 08, 2018, 09:29:16 PM »
hi,

I currently have an OK prowler 12.  I am considering a pedal kayak and am between a native titan 12 or a Hobie outback. Does anyone in the native kayak section ever taken your native out to the ocean. Would you recommend it for ocean fishing and is it ideal for the salt?

Thanks Sonny.

Introductions / New NCKA member from Milpitas
« on: August 03, 2018, 06:15:08 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I am a new member to NCKA.  I was introduced to your site by a fellow kayak fisherman that I met on the water.  I hope to be able to meet some more members and join in on some club events.

I currently fish local freshwater lakes and the delta.  I am hoping to fish saltwater but would feel more comfortable going out with some members who have experience in the ocean.  My kayak is an ocean kayak prowler 13.

Thank you.

Mijo.
