Places to Launch and Camp / Re: Good Kayak Ocean Fishing With A Launch Ramp

You will need to paddle very far to reach the 50-fathom line from most harbors/ramps. Rockfish/lingcod/cabezon is closed inside 50 fathoms.
Yes, that’s not happening. So have we been permanently excluded from fishing the ocean?

There's a ramp on the bay side at Doran in Bodega Bay - camp and launch from there. Miller's launch on Tomales as well.
Cheers,
Brad
Yes, How’s the rockfish fishing there? I know a lot of people go crabbing there but I don’t remember seeing any fishing reports.

No I haven’t heard about the closures/restrictions. I’m looking for a launch that does not require putting the kayak on wheels. I’m getting older and my Radar 135 is getting to be a bit much to pick up and put on the wheels and to drag up and down the beach. I wouldn’t call Ocean Cove a launch ramp but I think I can make it work. I’ll have to check out the other ones that were mentioned. I’d like to stay close enough to drive there in the morning. If not then someplace where I can camp or sleep in my truck the night before. Are all those harbors close to good fishing for rockfish?

Albion is one I can think of. Pillar Point and Doran both have launch ramps but I’ve never heard anything good about the rockfish fishing there. Any suggestions?

Thanks everyone. I think I might have to lose a little more weight so I can fit into my wetsuit before I get out on the salt again.  :smt006
Fuggetaboudit…just practice re-entry.  You slay blue fin!  A little paddle or pedal and salt can’t stop ya’! :smt006
I don’t think can make before the season closes but I’m going to be ready by next May.

Ever since Covid had us banned from parking out of our county I hadn’t gone fishing until this September. I’m getting my gear back in order and looking forward to some fall trout fishing. I hope everyone has been catching lots of fish. It’s good to be back on the water.

excellent Jerry - stay well!

Every day, buddy, I'm getting stronger!  I am THE MIRACLE SURVIVOR.  No doc would give me more than 45%=likely to be alive today.
Still fighting, but now have 80% likely survive.  Each week buys me another percentage.

Sad to hear this. Get well soon.

Sorry to hear you went in the water. Glad to hear you made it back out. Putah Creek resort charges the day use fee for kayak launching.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Which Fish Finder?
« on: August 24, 2021, 12:15:37 PM »
There you go. Get a Humminbird, Lowrance or Garmin.  :smt001 Does the transducer of any of them fit your kayak best? Do you like the mounting system of one better than the others?  Are the add on maps a better fit for your fishing?

A 5' swell at 20 seconds has more energy than 5' at 10 seconds. 20 seconds is more comfortable to fish and more energy hitting the beach when you launch or land. If you wipe out on an exposed beach it might be more meaningful.

I used to own a Tarpon 100 and a 120. I attached my FF to the track and used a arm to hang the transducer into the water. I laid the power wire along the side back to the tank well where I had my battery in a waterproof lock-n-lock. No holes to drill and easily removable. I used a 5 inch black and white Humminbird FF. I've changed over to Lowrance with my new kayak because the Humminbird doesn't work well with the pod based installation Wilderness uses now. I've still got the Humminbird setup and I've been wondering what to do with it. I'd like to pay it forward and I'll give you a deal you can't refuse if you want it. You'll have to get a battery for it though.
