Fishing Pics / First smoke ever
« on: October 11, 2023, 12:56:24 PM »
I may be the last American male w/o a smoker, so had to borrow my fishin' partners'.  They came out pretty yummy though.  Sly Creek Res bounty from September (thanks again to @plug-n-jug).

General Talk / What's this for? Old Town Sportsman PDL 120
« on: November 09, 2020, 01:02:51 PM »
Got a new rig (well, back in August) and am wondering if anyone knows what the below part is for.  Old Town Sportsman PDL 120.  It's mounted at the front of the bay that the propeller sits in.  I forgot to ask the guy when I bought it:

General Fishing Tips / Size of trebles for Lucky Craft lures
« on: December 13, 2019, 11:43:33 AM »
Hey, does anyone know the size of the treble hooks I'd need for the Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110 series?  Sportsman's had zero when I went and hoping to put on my list in Amazon, if they're quality.

I'd take brand recommendations too.  Also looking for the split rings.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Rod and reel for river stripers/salmon
« on: August 15, 2019, 03:31:00 PM »
Hey all, my birthday is coming up and I have the chance to upgrade my gear.  I'd like to get something that I can throw at stripers and/or salmon on my local rivers (Sacramento valley).

I'm looking to spend $100-$150 (maybe to $200 if it really makes sense).

My noobness tells me I'm looking for a reel in the 4000-5000 range (15# line) and a medium heavy, 7' spinning rod (haven't thrown a baitcaster yet).

I can get a Penn Battle 2 combo for just over $100.  Bingle tells me that Penn's are rock solid but "heavy" and not as smooth as say, a Shimano.  My cousin always lets me use his Shimano Sahara reel/Clarus rod, I've caught fish with it.  That combo will be very near $200.

Can I find something that will be able to do both stripers and salmon?  I like throwing lures/worms and trolling.  We're usually in a boat but I'd like to fish the deep water channel too, outta the kayak.  And someday down to the Delta.

Thanks for any direction.  Hopefully no one is annoyed by another "what's the best rod/reel..." topic.  When I searched, most (all?) of the striper rod discussions revolved around the salt.

General Fishing Tips / Lowrance Hook2 5x splitshot HDI
« on: July 12, 2019, 03:17:10 PM »
I bought a Lowrance Hook2 5x last year, have only used a handful of times but am seeing some weirdness:

When I have the "Fish ID" off, I'll see plenty of "stuff" in the water (dots, groups of dots, static) that do not look like the traditional "arches" that identify fish.  If I turn the "Fish ID" on, it shows any markings in the water as fish.  I'm skeptical that it's correctly id'ing fish.  I should be seeing "arches" if they truly are fish, correct?

I have the transducer mounted to the bottom of the kayak, it sits about 6-8" down from the bottom of the hull.  The transducer is attached to a PVC pipe that runs up thru my scupper and is kept stable by a small piece of a pool noodle.  The transducer cable runs up thru the PVC and to my head.

Do I need to mess with the settings, like sensitivity or noise reduction or something?  The manual (and the web) do not say anything about these settings, or how increasing or decreasing them affects anything.  I'd prefer not changing anything without knowing what I'm doing.  I do realize I can set it back to factory at any time.

Side note: I bought this unit specifically so that I could see both the sonar and downscan imaging.  The sales guy at Sportsmans assured me that I could have a split screen to see both.  This is not the case, it's one or the other.  Super frustrating, but my own fault for purchasing then not immediately using.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Lake Tahoe
« on: February 28, 2018, 02:39:29 PM »
I'm headed to south Lake Tahoe this weekend (March 3-4) for a men's retreat but will have some down time to fish.  Specifically I'll be in Zephyr Cove on the Nevada site.

I have no experience up there at all.  Anyone willing to provide a bit of direction and some tips on how to fish the lake (or nearby streams) when it's this cold?  I don't have the gear (yet) to brave the water with the 'yak so will be shore bound.

I don't mind hiking if it'll get me on fish.  I'd also love to hookup if anyone's close.

TIA

Craftsmen's Corner / Pedal power
« on: February 11, 2018, 04:01:51 PM »
I don't want to hijack this thread (http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=80230.0) as it's in regards to mounting a Hobie system.  But there's pics there that I've been trying to figure out how to do for a while.

Does anyone know how to build the "drive" (the big arrow) in the below pic?  And what type of "head" or shaft would I use to accept power from the "drive" (the small arrow).  Has anyone put this together yet?

I've seen a few pics about them online but no "how-to" or specs on it.  I know about the NuCanoe and h2pproped models but similarly to the OP in the other thread, feels like I can build this for less than $800.

I too have an Ascend 128T but do not want to attempt any hull modifications.

Thanks.

General Fishing Tips / Surf fishing in Capitola/Santa Cruz area
« on: August 20, 2017, 09:44:53 PM »
I'm headed to Capitola this weekend, am going to try and surf fish one morning.  Can anyone give me some direction on which beach to try?  Also, any tips for how to fish it would be welcome.

From what I've read and seen, I'll be throwing either a sliding sinker behind a leader with a Gulp sand worm on it.  May also look at a dropshot tie up, too.

if anyone wants to connect, face to face works for me too.

General Talk / Fishing app?
« on: August 17, 2017, 05:24:47 PM »
Are there any fishing apps that you use? I have "Fishbrain" downloaded, it seems up to date for my area. Any other suggestions are welcome.

I figured this has been asked before but the bit of searching I did turned up nil.
