Hello all. Fairly newb here lookin for tips on minnow drifting from a new kayak. Mainly plan on fishing the port of Sac. Been using a light egg sinker while drifting but not sure if I'm actually on the bottom. Had a few hook ups but wondering if I need to use heavier weight, increase speed, or just stay put more. Thanks. Any help is appreciated.

I use a light egg too. I let line out till it goes slack which means you are on the bottom. Then I reel up 1-2 cranks to get minnow off the bottom. I usually don't go too far and let minnow works its magic for a little bit. No love then I move on a few feet. When I'm moving I just let a little more line out.

Thanks for the info. I think I may be letting out too much line and probably doing more paddling than needed. It's exciting when that minnow starts going crazy because I know something's spooking him. Can't wait to get out there again.

I was considering the 3 way rig. I was using only a 3/8 oz egg sinker from a leader

+1 on both mentioned rigs. Depends on wind, depth and current.  I shy away from weight  as much as possible to feel light mouthing or if the baitfish is going nuts too.

I like the heavier weight so that I can get it to the bottom quick, hold the depth I want, and it keeps the minnow in one spot -especially if it s getting chased.

Also what type of hooks are you using? I like hooking the minnows through the nose area better than the mouth they stay spunkier longer.

You want these hooks for drifting and let the striper set the hook.

Thanks again for the info. I guess I need to try to be more patient and sit in an area longer instead of trying to cover more ground. I shouldn't necessarily be trying to troll the minnow, but more still fishing and occasionally slow paddling when moving to different spots?

I've been using Gamakatsu 2/0 wide gap hooks with success. The same hooks I wacky rig Senkos with.

I use a Carolina rig with a plastic sliding snap with a 1 to 2 oz round ball weight, has worked fairly well for me so far, but I may try some of these other combinations.

If you have a fish finder keep an eye on what depth the fish and bait are at. Alot of times due to different water temps the fish are not always on the bottom. They are suspended in the water collum. I use a line counter reel to lower my minnow down to what depth the fish and bait balls are holding at. For me I just run a snap swivel off my main line with a 1oz to 2oz cannon ball then a 3ft leader to a size 2 Gamakatsu octopus hook. Hook the minnow under the chin and through the nose and let in down.

I use a 1 oz egg sinker above a snap swivel. A 4 ft leader with 14# florocarbon leader with a 4 octopus hook. I find that larger hooks make the minnow swim nose down and I dont get as many strikes. When I get a hit I let him run a l9ng way before I engage the drag and set tge hook. I also let it hit bottom and then bring it up about three feet and just drift with the wind or slower. 100 yards in an hour
Works for me everytime I goto the port.
