Just talked to the Inn Keeper and Captain Jake Mitchell of Seahawk Charters. We'll have a great raffle benefiting Shelter Cove Fishing Preservation Inc. (SCFPI) again, and Captain Jake will be at our festivities to fill us all in on what their group is doing for the Cove. The Inn Keeper and Capt. Jake are on the board of SCFPI, and they're keeping fishing alive at the best kayak fishing port in Nor Cal - worthy cause for sure.
Again this year the grand prize will be a spot plus a guest on Capt. Jake's boat for a charter on Sunday, May 17th - the day after the tourney. The other spots will be raffled off - full Gimme Shelter charter!
I'm working with my good friend Shawn Griggs on the artwork and look forward to getting the registration and details of the event up within a couple of weeks.
Don't forget - this is a rain or shine event! :smt001

Thanks for doing all the leg works Eric.

The campground has a large overflow camping area. There will 100% be space available for tent camping. If you want an RV space with hookups you need to reserve in advance.

Here's the artwork for this year's event.
Registration is open through April 20th - see the three attachments on the first post of this thread.

The artwork looks awsome, but I'll miss the traditional.
Might this be a sign of changing direction for the event?
Either way, this event has deffinatly changed my life!

Thanks, Eric! :smt001
No big changes about the event. After 10 years with the NCKA "Linghead" vector on the front of all the gear, I decided to move away from it. It's just a refresh after a long history of repetition that was genuinely based on honoring the club. I still honor NCKA and highly value the community - membership is still required for participation at GS.
Another issue was the artwork factor. Working with a professional artist on this was a new experience after years of just getting my t-shirt printer or a friend to help me with my "art". This year I set out to have a new design for the back of the shirt, and it occurred to me to work with my friend Shawn Griggs again - he'd helped me out last year with a quick drawing for a discounted rate for a friend. I liked what he did so easily, so I went all in for whatever he charges for a t-shirt design this year. Then I found out that the full price t-shirt design comes with a front design too, and that pushed me to something I've considered for years now - moving on from the longtime standard Linghead vector.
On top of that, I realized that working with an artist you've got to consider what you're putting on a shirt with their work. It hadn't occurred to me until I was well into the process that it may be imposing on his style to just have his artwork on a shirt with other affiliations than my event itself. So going with his suggestions on the paired front and back artwork felt natural and easy.
Last point here, and it relates to something that Mike Sapp brought up about making prints of the artwork. I told my artist about the idea, and he said, "yeah, we could talk about that..." I then went on to get an education about how buying professional artwork actually goes down. I bought a t-shirt design - front and back. I have the right to print t-shirts and other gear and use the art on media for the event, but I didn't buy the right to do prints of it. I was a bit taken aback by this, but once Shawn very thoughtfully explained it to me I am in full understanding and agreement with this. He gave me the example of a local brewery that commissioned him to do art for one of their specialty brews. His "Day of the Dead" style with the skeleton character is very popular, and the brewery owner went on to put the artwork on shirts and hoodies. Shawn explained that it's a very specific deal to do the beer label, and other merchandise and especially prints of art must only be produced as part of a contractual agreement between the artist and the buyer.
Shawn is doing a painting of the artwork that he intends to throw in as a gesture because we've been friends since we were kids, and I told him I want it in the raffle - he's down with that.
-
I like the art work. I see a fishing kayaker with some safety gear , a cooler with all his favorite beverages, one pac hali in the back and another fish on ! Whats not to like about this.
Looking forward to getting there as early in the week as possible.
As you can tell by all the stamps i dont mail things often other than fishing tournament registrations.

Brewery art is a little third rail, but since you brought it up, ask flatmo if you really want a familiar story with an unexpected twist.

Here's the sketch that'll become a painting to be in the raffle. :smt001
-
Here's a change this year - I lost my access to the laminator that's produced way over a thousand Hawg Trough Extensions! (and I'm doing a "refresh" on that tradition too! :smt005)
If you want one you can make a note on your registration and I'll get one to you. :smt001
-
Traditions become periods and are properly memorialized when they are part of a heritage.
That's what we're doing at Gimme Shelter.
:smt001
-
It was 2006. I'd been on NCKA for almost two years. NCKA had been around almost 2 years... Having bought my first yak - a Hobie Pursuit (no pedals) - in 1999, I had since picked up a few Costco boats, and my best boat at that point was a Scrambler XT - I still have it.
It was mid September, and I'd been catching a few smaller salmon down at the Cove earlier in the year. Salmon season opened on the second Saturday in February back then - those were the days!
Here's the link to the report from 9/11/06: http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=5461.0
Long story shorter, I caught a salmon that basically led to Gimme Shelter. Half a dozen of us got together the following March to try for salmon. We didn't land any, but we had a great time hanging out for a couple days in the upper corner of the campground. A tradition had been born.
Hopefully we get a salmon season this year.

Way cool and creative direction with the artwork Eric! I was thinking the skeleton was a call-out to the iconic Dead man's beach. An interesting perspective from the artist on the artwork thing-makes sense, maybe one or two signed for the raffle. I'll see you there

Any chance you can post picture of hat logo?
Thanks
Hat is the same as last year. 🙂
I have a few of the dark blue with black yakker and a few more of the black hat with sapphire yakker.
-
Doing hats with the new logo would be great, but it’s hard to produce quality and keep the price reasonable without buying numbers up front.
The art is pretty busy for a hat too.

True. I guess a lot of detail would be lost in reducing it to a hat size version. Almost need to do another rendering, which would cost again.

Eric,
thanks for hat picture.

Two different years, a Pacific halibut has made the difference and elevated the GS AOTD above all other anglers that day. Jacks / Terry Saufferer and MattSwayze / Matthew Mayes both achieved that difficult goal on tourney day - they were gracious and triumphant champions, and everyone was stoked for them.
On several different years we've caught and/or hooked Pacifics over the GS weekend - there have been some brutes, topped by BigFoot / Randall Nellums' 51.5" beauty a day or two after the tourney on a flat ocean. I'll dig up some pics in the coming weeks. If you were there, you know how intense it was to realize that we all have a chance at these amazing fish at the Cove.
I was lucky enough to get one back in 2011 - not at the GS weekend, but out of the Cove.
It's part of what we're doing: trying to achieve something amazing that the entire community can be stoked for and that each of us can strive for.

Just spent a while reliving GS3 through the thread and reports.
Some highlights:
- we figured out that catching a Pacific halibut is REAL! Domenic got it done out by the Whiss.
- Jedmo won the informal, free tourney with a 56" wolf eel
- the breakwater wasn't built up yet - man was that different!
- a tradition was growing. :smt001

I was just told by the campground personnel that the camping fees will be $60 per person per night.... Which is insane! Has anyone else heard this?
-
GS4 - After having about 50 yaks on the water at GS3 and executing a free tourney with some donated prizes, GS4 ended up with around 80-some participants. It was the first of several years where the grand prize was a full size fishing kayak. It was also the first year handing out 10 inch abalone shells with custom tags for AOTD and SOTD. Another first was the black t-shirt with the NCKA "Linghead" vector on the front - the first of 10 years in a row of that tradition.
Big Jim went from riding the "Big Yak", that was way too small for him, to winning a new 15 foot boat that served him well for years afterward.
We competed with an AOTY style format, and my daughter and I learned that calculating all the scores to the 1/4 inch was a challenge!
The community was drawing together through the event, and Shelter Cove was getting to know what NCKA is all about. :smt001

I made my campground reservation for an RV spot with power hook up. They billed me first night at $49 and that is two people, no pets.
So for us, it is $49 for two in an RV. I have no idea what a tent site costs though.

I just got off the phone with Jack.
Same general setup as always, price is now $30 per person per night for the tournament weekend for tent campers. RV sites are reservable as always.
He also asks that if you have an RV reservation and then stay home because the oceans blown out or the weather sucks, call and cancel your reservation.

Excellent work, counselor. Thank you! :smt001
$30/night/person in the big group area they give us sounds right. It's not cheap - that's another reason that some folks have gone to inns, the motel and vacation rentals over the years. That said, those who know how to storm camp and set it up for community unity and culinary delight in a protected environment are dialed in the campground, and enough space is provided to make it worthwhile. I love the aspect of GS that is the campground scene.
-
I'm thankful there even is a campground. I imagine a large part of the year there aren't many campers. They do a great job with upkeep, bathrooms, portapots, etc. And the deli serves some great grub! Every year I take a little less groceries and dine local.
Now, where's the potluck thread? I got my hands on a Prime grade brisket and bringing the smoker.
-
Well $30 is a lot better. It's still $120 a night for an RV site with 4 dudes which is more than I have ever paid anywhere but it's a great event and I will be there.
-

Yeah, certainly - but Jerry (SP3) reported he had reserved an RV site with electricity for two people and it was $49 per night. Wouldn't that be $98 for people then?
-
That's just the deposit. Last year it was the same way, $49 deposit then charged per person once we got there.
Edit- I believe it's per kayaker so wives and kids are not charged. FYI.

That's not the normal way it works. Normally it's $49/night up to 2 adults. 2 additional adults are allowed at $10/ea for a total of 4 adults per RV site and $69.
I just got off the phone with Jack again, and for tournament weekend only, the RV sites are $60 for up to 2 adults, and each additional adult is $30. He's basically trying to make it $30/ea whether you are in an RV or a tent, and the additional money over the normal campground fee is his way of offsetting the costs of the exclusive use of the pavillion, extra trash, portacan rentals, etc. I think it makes a lot of sense to do it this way.
To reiterate - if you have an RV site reserved, for tournament weekend only:
1 adult = $60/night total
2 adults = $60/night total
3 adults = $90/night total
4 adults = $120/night total.
It's basically the same as the tent camping fee unless you are flying solo. You just need to reserve if you are want an RV site, and RV sites include water and electricity - tent camp sites don't.
-
Don't forget Mario's is there as well. They hiked up the price this year so we got an Air B&B for us 5 at the same cost as 2 rooms, not far from the camp grounds.
-
It's the season to Camp, it makes sense, 30 a night isn't crazy compared to other campgrounds. And it might help keep sites available for tournament goers.
-
Camp fees for RV have slowly increased. Starting in 2014 I was charged $45 a night for me and wife in RV with hook-ups. Last 2 years and this year are $49 a night. True-up on the remaining bill (deposit is first night fee) reflects this fee. I know I was told $49 a night, not $60. Good people there, I'm sure they won't charge me more than they quoted.

By May the virus will have mutated to something much more deadly, affecting young and healthy right along with the elderly and 'underlying conditions'. Same thing happened in 1918 with the Spanish Flu at the end of WWI.
OR
A lot of politicians will have a lot of 'splainin' to to do for their kneejerk reaction to what essentially will turn out to be a non-event. But they can always claim it's a non event because of their interaction, not in spite of it.
That'll cost you a dozen oysters Doug. Pay me at GSXIV or GSXV depending...
-
Doing a lot of thinking about how the virus may affect not only GS but everything in our lives very soon.
I predict that shit's about to get bumpy in the United States. From what I've been reading, it looks like places that respond quickly with lots of testing and social isolation are the ones that are coming through this with a significantly lower mortality rate. We can all see that the truth is that we are not in a position to do widespread testing in our country at this time.
We will know more within a week to 10 days, I think.
Regarding GS - I will issue refunds if we cannot hold the event. I will hopefully be able to make a final decision by the registration cutoff date of April 20th, 2020.
Stay safe, and please take the time to educate yourself with facts - it seems to be pretty difficult for part of our population to latch onto them these days.

WOW!
Was kind of expecting changes as soon as I read Bushy talking about having to adjust things at his derby a couple days ago.
I was talking to my boys during dinner last night and explained to them that something like this never happened during my lifetime that I could recall.
If there was a similar scenario social media wasn’t around to spread the news instantaneous 24/7 be it positive or negative.

It's getting worse in US by the day! :smt009

That’s a good list, Sonny. Where can we find it, is it live update?

Amazing amount of data and report options. Thanks for the link.

This wasn't my plan to get another sixty page GS thread going... :smt009
Let's hope for a concerted community response that leads to as many positive outcomes as possible.
I am urging all to promote awareness around them - too many people are not taking this seriously.
-
I'm all out of hats, folks. If the pandemic blows over and we are green light for GS14 as planned, I'll consider doing more hats. Otherwise, I'm taking it off of the registration form for now.
Thx. :smt001

I'm not happy with how this crisis is being faced by some. The denial of seriousness, the stubborn enforcement of individual rights in the face of a community disaster where cooperation will directly save lives, the continued lack of leadership and even an immoral denial of government assistance - it's all shameful.
I'm done with it for now.
Checking out for a while.
I welcome calls from friends.
-
Man... I wasn’t going to make it up there but I still hate reading this news.
Hang in there, Eric... This too shall pass, and maybe a few stubborn people will come away with a new perspective.

I completely understand and support your decision. Stay safe, my friend! I look forward to seeing you when this shit has passed.

While not wanting to suggest that all is clear and the danger is over, there is good news. The people that modeled England have reduced their fatality estimate from 500,000 to 20,000. If they now believe their model was that far off we can hope this will turn out to be closer to a flu than an apocalypse.

Eric,
I also respect and support your decision. I’m sure it was a hard one to make.
Stay healthy and safe.

Be safe everyone. Getting crazy out there. Stay inside with the family

Much respect, brother Eric! I understand, accept, and support your decision. But I still hope to see ya when this is all done—whenever that may be! :smt006

Thanks, guys.
It’s getting to me a bit.

Me too, Eric. Relax, have another brew, and know that we are all with you.

Support your decision 100 percent.
See you soon brother :smt001

I understand and support your decision, AK. It’s unfortunate for our extended family of fishers, but the right choice to help and protect people from many communities.
Looking forward to the time we can all get together again!

This.
Wishing everyone well. I have sacrificed a lot of income to self isolate to protect my Family . Voluntary leave of absence for two weeks with no pay. My sons have come to our home with myself and my wife . We have only left our home several times . We stocked up over a month in advance before there was even a rush. My wife took it very serious in February so we followed here lead.
Unfortunately bills need to be paid and i must now return to work.
Wishing you and your family well Eric.

Hey Abking :smt003,
The decision to cancel was an easy one, and the right one; it's just a tough pill to swallow.
Let's see, do I endanger the lives of family and friends which could have exponential consequences or do I throw caution to the wind and have a kick ass party?
Seems like a simple choice from this chair.
Another way of looking at it:
Six degrees of separation is the idea that all people are six, or fewer, social connections away from each other. Also known as the 6 Handshakes rule. As a result, a chain of "a friend of a friend" statements can be made to connect any two people in a maximum of six steps.
With this in mind, to me it seems inevitable that this would further spread the virus with such a diverse group of people coming from a variety of locations.
85K and counting. Easy decision, just hard to take.
-
Had to be done, as difficult as it may be. Leadership.
-
We'll be back.Good job Abking

Thanks all. I was pretty sure I'd cancel a couple weeks ago, but I kept it open to see if I could get enough signups to make the gear and send it out. I should've just closed it right when I felt that it wasn't a good idea - because I don't want to give people the wrong impression.

I hope to plan now to make my first GS event for next year. Gonna meet you and fish on the appointed day and be stoked. :smt006

I believe that at the heart of all of our fishing is soulfulness. We are looking for ways to help us understand our purpose in life, and sharing our experiences and exploits in the outdoors helps us to relate to each other. The best in us often comes out as a result of these interactions - both between us and Nature and between ourselves. Everyone expresses their feelings differently, but everyone has feelings. This place, NCKA, has provided over 15 years of discovery for me regarding myself, others, Nature, feelings... Life is about connecting, and everything we can do to increase our connections is vital to our purpose.
I appreciate the way that you express yourself, Eddie. It will be my pleasure to meet you, sir.

Strong move. The right move. Let me know if I can do anything. Stay safe.

You can donate my entrance fee to the shelter cove preservation fund. See you next time.
-
Donate my fee too.
-
Donate mine as well please.
-
Hi Eric, you made a hard and right decision. Keeping people we love, all humanity safe, is the best thing any of us can do and it's free.
Frank "Ghost" would like you to donate his registration fee to the Shelter Cove preserve also. He loves fishing there and wants to help keep it going.
Everyone, be as safe, careful and healthy as you can do!
-
Hello Eric, was looking on attending this year’s tournament. But like others, restrictions have been placed on my movement, in order to protect myself and my family and my community. I would also like to donate my entrance fees to Shelter Cove preservation. There will always be another year. Hopefully I will be given the opportunity to fish later in this year.
Take care of yourself John

Nice move, guys!
I will be in touch with everyone who signed up, and we will light it up as best we can.
Thank you!

Eric,
You are a wise leader and host. Just echoing the masses on here- good call.

Ive spent the weekend in tears on and off, because this is the time my brother Matt and I usually do our best to make this trip each year. I came here wondering how things went with all that’s going on in the world.
I’m really sorry to hear it got cancelled. I hope you all can make it happen next year. This event will always have a special place for me in my heart. And I’m deeply missing my brother.

Feeling your pain Brother. Its terrible to lose a loved one. I would imagine it would be a little tougher losing a brother. Hope to see you at a gathering hopefully soon. Glad to see a post from you.

Thanks for posting, Ryan. When you shared with us how Matt had passed I was hurting over it for sure. What I try to accomplish with Gimme Shelter has so much to do with what you and your brother represent. When I met you and Matt and spent time with you guys I felt fortunate to have experienced it. Your bond and the context overall made my interaction with you and Matt a very special part of my GS memory bank. I will always hold you two close to my heart. Much love, my friend. Hold your head high and keep living life with strength and honor. I hope to fish with you again. :smt001

I can remember it like yesterday—relaxing on the deck at the deli after another epic day of fishing, talking to Matt about his truck while eating lunch...two years ago. :smt049 Hang in there Ryan, we miss you!
