a shoulder injury forces me to get out of kayak fishing, at least for the time being.   As such I've decided to sell my complete package which was bought just last fall.  Here's what you get:
- ocean kayak trident 13 angler
- paddle and leash
- stohlquist angler life jacket
- tackle box secured in back of yak
- kayak cart
- garmin echo 200 fish finder, transducer mounted in hull.  This trident has the transducer compatible scupper hole but I opted to keep everything protected in the hull.  Works perfectly)
- new cabelas fishfinder battery and charger
- new unused size 10 deep see 5mm booties
- a hull full of pool noodles (can't remember how many I crammed in there.  Probably 15- 20 and still plenty of room to put full sized rods and reels in there
- bilge pump

All of these items are new.  I have all receipts and paperwork.  Kayak is still under warranty from Ocean Kayak.   I used this kayak 3 times.  The battery is still on it's first charge.  Everything can be considered as new.  Not a single blemish.  I'll list on craigslist too but it would be nice to set up a fellow NCKA member.  If you are just getting into the sport, like I was, this is the package for you.  Ready to fish TODAY!  All the rigging is done, all the fish finder install ready to go.

I'm into it for a bit over $1700, I'll sell for $1400.  Consider all the shipping, tax, multiple vendors and time you'll go through to put this together.  You could be on the water this afternoon!

General Fishing Tips / newbie sliding snell frustration - other options?
« on: September 15, 2012, 07:48:49 AM »
I spent a couple hours trying to tie a sliding snell with limited success, even using my fly tying vice.  I managed two rigs that were only barely passable in my opinion and I wasn't really confident that what I'd tied wouldn't be a weak point.  This got me thinking of trying some other sliding options.  Feel free to tell me that these are really bad ideas.   I'm not looking to reinvent the wheel and probably should just practice more.  I was thinking of replacing the separate line that attaches the main line to the sliding hook with something else.  Small heat shrink tubing came to mind, or small rubber bands, or I could get out the fly tying gear and whip finish some thread.  Any thoughts?  It seems after examining the sliding snell that the mechanism for holding the main line to the sliding hook is irrelevant once you hook a fish on it.  The hook is going to slide down to the bottom hook and stop because the main line goes through the eye of the sliding hook.  OK, let the "you're crazy" comments fly.  I can take it!

Planning on launching at 6am at the wharf.   If I can catch bait I will probably try for some halibut, but otherwise will go for whatever else is biting. Company welcome!

Anyone heading out this weekend in the Santa Cruz area?  I'm wanting to launch at 6am either morning, just not sure which day I have free yet or if anyone is heading out.  Any plans?

For Sale / group buy on pool noodles? Anyone interested?
« on: July 24, 2012, 08:40:11 AM »
I need a load of noodles for my new yak and haven't found much locally.  What I have found are hollow noodles for $6 each!  When it comes down to it I'd rather spend what little free time I have fishing rather than shopping for noodles so I've started to look online.  I've found nicer solid core noodles for around $4 to my door but was thinking of trying to get a quantity discount.  If anyone is interested PM me how many you might want.  Pick up would be in the santa cruz area.  If not I'll get one 20 pack for me and get on the water!

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / what size gaff hook is appropriate?
« on: July 03, 2012, 07:23:52 AM »
Having not caught a lunker yet I decided now is the time to get a gaff so I don't have to get one AFTER I loose the fish.  I'm going to make my own and wondered what size gaff hook is appropriate for the type of fishing we do?  Seems like the consensus is a 2" hook (2" gap between shaft and point).  I've never used a gaff so this is all foreign to me.  As far as length I'd guess pretty short would do the trick in a yak, maybe 14", though I see lots of people using upwards of 24"?  I build rods so I might use that technique or I could turn a handle on my lathe in the wood shop.  Not sure which direction I'll go yet but I've got to get the hook first.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / looking to select the right fish finder
« on: June 26, 2012, 08:13:03 PM »
While still shopping for my fist new kayak I thought I should do the same for a fish finder.  Here's the catch: being a self proclaimed cheap bastard I looked at my credit card rewards points and they have a selection of fish finders that I could have now without having to shell out a dime, just my accumulated points.  The ones offered that seem like are of the right caliber, in no particular order, are:
Garmin 150, 200, 300c and the hummingbird 718 and the piranhamax 170.  Which one of those would you guys deem suitable?  My needs are fresh and salt, as light as possible and easy to use.  I'm not really interested in GPS combo units just something simple that will work well.  The 300c gets great reviews but it seems the 200 has all the same features and power with a larger screen, though not color which I'm not sure is needed?  I know next to nothing about FF so school me on the goods and bads and what to look for.  Thanks all!

I'm considering these among a few options for a new kayak.  Wondering if anyone has seen them and if the "blemishes" are just that.  I could care less about crooked lettering or scratches, but would care about a hulls out of whack or misshapen.  I'll get those on my first outing.  Any opinions on these and/or the vendor?  The price is in my ballpark and it isn't too far a drive from Santa Cruz....

Malibu Kayaks / so what's the final verdict on the stealth 12?
« on: June 11, 2012, 12:33:03 PM »
The kayak I've been using is on loan so I will have to give it back eventually.  It is a bit bothersome since it isn't mine so I can't make any mods at all.  I've seen the stealth 12 in person and it looks great but all the most recent reviews seem to be a couple years old.  Presumably the leak issues have been fixed?  Or no?  What else?  What shouldn't I get this kayak?  I like compartments close at hand and the weight since many launches will be solo.  I don't really need the live bait but I like the size of that compartment right there, and having the option for live bait would be great for the future.   Any more recent feedback on these kayaks?

First post!  I'm new to kayak fishing and have not even been out yet!  I live in the Santa Cruz area and my friend and I have been waiting for better conditions to head out locally.  Lots of wind lately, or at least when we were available to go out.  Now I'm thinking about Lexington Reservoir, which I'm only 20 minutes away from.  How's the fishing here lately?  All the reports I have found seem to be pretty old.  Any tips for a newbie on his maiden voyage?
