Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Re: How do I get started?
« on: March 25, 2012, 11:36:59 AM »
Ok, well, other than snorkeling in tropical environs I have no "dive" experience at all. I'm pretty comfortable in cold water, e.g., my chest does not tighten up my body does not stiffen up. I'm a smaller guy, 5' 3" and 145# (low body mass) so I do need a good suit to keep from getting too cold. I have no dive gear but the link to FDA (thanks chaeki) was helpful except that I could use some recommendations as far as quality/brands and purveyors are concerned. I prefer smaller, independent, local (sonoma county) business. Even better if it's recycled/used gear form private parties.

I'd like to start Ab/Scallop/Uni diving this year. What do I need to know? What do I need to have? What are some good resources?

Any/all help is appreciated.

Hey Craig,
I assume OK is gonna be there but does anybody know if they'll have a 4.3 for demo?

Assuming it doesn't rain before. I've never done it but I'm up for tryin' it if the river clears up. Anybody else?

Pablo, Thanks man, I'll give Mission Bay a shot while I'm there. Any suggestions with regards to halibut? Is there a bait boat/barge in Mission Bay?

@ jbaker - Yep, Josh kinda swore me to secrecy. Gotta respect his wishes. Having grown up in the party/commercial fishing industry I know how a little slip up can shut down a bite if not an entire fishery. But maybe we'll fish together down there sometime and you can glean for yourself what I may pick up...

Sounds good Bob, I'll be arriving late Thursday. How does Friday work for you? I could do Saturday if it's better. You wanna PM me your phone number?

[Hey everybody, I'm gonna go down to SB in mid Feb. I've looked around but can't find anyone local to hook up with. I guess I'm gonna just scout it out myself and fish what looks like good structure. All are welcome to join. Will post launch time and location as we get closer and have finished researching. The wife's grandfather died this morning. Maybe another time.

Alright, thanks for all the help. I've got Josh booked on the 1st and Kevin on the 4th. Both of them feel like it's perfect timing, we'll see. I'll go it alone on the 2nd and 3rd, maybe just bass and halibut in the bay. Still open to anyone joining in. Looks like it's gonna be great!

@ Danglin, thanks for the reference. I like that guy you can tell he loves what he's doin'. I'll call him for sure.

@ Great Bass 2, great idea I'll PM deepdvr asap! I found a great web link at DFG that shows your current location overlaid on the closure maps using your phone browser. It can be found at http://www.dfg.ca.gov/m/mpa/Map . I didn't get a chance to read the articles yet but I'll do that later, thanks.

@ jbaker, thanks for the heads up regarding Josh, I'll give him a ring. I do have a tank and a cart. I'm thinkin' I'll fish all day thursday hopefully get a shot at the WSB in the morning and evening and work the YT in between. Probably fish 10-3 friday and saturday (again chase the YT). And then another full day on sunday (same plan as thursday).

For Sale / Mad Frog Johnny Bars $10
« on: July 29, 2010, 12:26:40 AM »
If anybody is interested I just found at least 6 maybe 10 brand new "Johnny Bars" for less than ten bucks each. They're on the clearance rack (back right corner of the building as you enter) at the Santa Rosa West Marine. Mad Frog's website lists them at sixty five bucks a pop.

Thanks for that advice Tailwalk, working on that now... just hoping to put it into practice in a real world situation (i.e. one where there may be an actual fish involved).

Hey Everyone, I'm trying to find somebody to go fly fishing with. ˇˇˇWarning!!! ˇˇˇWarning!!!
I'm new to fly fishing and yak fishing. I'm trying to get ready for a trip to Montana in august.
Could use any help I can get. My schedule is pretty flexible and I'm willing to drive a fair distance. Any takers?
