Found this in a box while cleaning house. Bought new last year and used it on my old Trident 13 before I sold that yak earlier this year.  Everything still works.  Powered up fine.  Everything you need to go fish: power cable, transducer, FF, and mount.  Great, simple unit.

For Sale / Daiwa 8'6" Accculite Spinning Rod with Shimano Sahara 4000
« on: October 30, 2018, 03:36:26 PM »
This rod has been sitting around my house awhile.  I think I used it once or twice for surf perch, but thats it.  I have 3-4 Acculites, and love them.  Great light-medium all around rod.  I've them for surf perch, plugging for stripers, and caught a few halibut.  Selling this one because it has the foam grip/handle, and I prefer the cork ones.

Specs:
Daiwa 8'6" Acculite MHFS Spinning Rod
Lure wt: 1/2oz to 1.5oz
Line wt: 8-20lb

Paired with a Shimano Sahara 4000 - currently spooled with 8lb mono

Rarely used, but has a few light scratches near the base from being moved around.  The tip and guides are damage-free.

Asking $75 for rod and reel.
Pick up in El Cerrito.

General Fishing Tips / Lowrance Elite 5 TI - $300 transducer worth it?
« on: October 29, 2018, 06:58:43 PM »
I was recently gifted a Lowrance Elite5 TI.  I have the power cable but no transducer.  I stopped by West Marine today to check for a compatible transducer and the salesman told me that I needed the TotalScan skimmer transducer at a whopping $299.99 PLUS TAX!!!

Is this true and have to use that transducer with the Elite5 TI? If so, is it really worth it?  I can't use one of the other transom transducers?  I'm not even sure the TotalScan will fit in my Outback pod.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

General Fishing Tips / Where's the RF reports along the peninsula?
« on: July 11, 2018, 12:17:23 PM »
I haven't been seeing much report in terms of rockfish and lings from the Peninsula.  Is everyone just too busy catching salmon?  I'm not able to get out early enough to chase salmon (kids & daycare), so rockfish would be my tease to get out there.

Are they even biting?  Bean Hollow, Pigeon Point, HMB...??
Or is no one going after them right now...?

General Fishing Tips / Broke a pin on the FF, how to fix?
« on: June 18, 2018, 09:31:51 AM »
Saw a bent pin on the transducer plug, bent it back and just broke off.  Now I'm kicking myself, since I'm about to head out for salmon tomorrow.

Any way to fix it?  Can I just replace the PWR plug?  Or am I buying a new FF?

It's a lowrance Elite-4.  If buying a new FF, thinking of just a Hook 4x or 5x.

Thoughts?

For Sale / Brooklyn Kayak TK181 Tandem
« on: April 19, 2018, 12:08:45 AM »
Brooklyn Kayak had some very appealing advertisements a few months back, so I bit the bullet and bought one from their SoCal vendor.  $700 shipped and arrived at my door in 4 doors.  My wife and I used it twice to drop pots in Bodega Bay.  It wasn't the greatest, most comfortable kayak I've ever used but worked enough.  We ended up having a kid and haven't taken it out since.  So its up for sale.

Brooklyn Kayak TK181
Tandem 2-person fishing kayak
Gray Camo color
https://brooklynkayakcompany.com/products/kayak-models-uh-tk181?variant=2864870850587&_vsrefdom=adwords

PROS:
- lots of deck space and storage
- wide and stable
- comes with fishing rod holders
- (2) pairs of paddles
- (2) kayak seats
- (2) waterproof storage bags (for center hatch/hull storage)
- very little use (only been in the water twice)

CONS:
- slow moving
- fairly heavy out of the water, but to be expected since its a tandem

Pretty straight forward.  Not an awesome fishing kayak, but it gets the job done as a tandem kayak.

For Sale / FS: Ocean Kayak Trident 13 camo
« on: April 18, 2018, 11:59:20 PM »
Finally upgraded to a Hobie Outback but now its time to say farewell to my trusty OK Trident 13.  This was my 1st fishing kayak which I love dearly.  I was real hesitant to go with a peddle kayak for years because I love the exercise I get with paddling and am more comfortable with it.  But I see myself going longer and further during fishing trips and I needed something more efficient.  So she's up for sale.  :smt010

General Talk / Brooklyn Kayak Company review
« on: November 05, 2017, 07:08:56 PM »
Hello Everyone,

Figured I'd throw up a review for these BKC or Brooklyn Kayak Company kayaks that I've been seeing these on craigslist and Amazon for relatively cheap.  There's 3 different models:  12' single, 12' tandem, and 12' 3-person kayaks.  Each have an array of rod holders, paddle holders, storage, etc..

I ordered the kayak on a Monday from a dealer in SoCal, and it arrived Thursday to my front door.  At first glance, it looked like a great kayak.  The driver helped me unload it, a pretty heavy pig, but expected since I got the tandem angler model.  My wife likes to leisurely tag along on my crabbing trips and occasional lazy trout days when the ocean conditions aren't good.  Our last tandem kayak, a Pelican Apex 12t, wasn't a fishing kayak per se, but it was an introduction if my wife and I could work as a team out there on the water, while trying to crab or fish.  It served us well being extra stable and pretty comfortable.

Work ended up being really busy and I had to hold off on trying the BKC kayak for a few weeks.  Then with the crab opener coming, I decided to convince a coworker to come with me to Doran yesterday and try out the new yak.

Let's start with the PROs...
Lots of Room
Even with two 5'9" 170lb dudes on the yak, we still had enough room to put 4 danielson traps on the yak.  Legroom was very nice, especially in the rear seat.
Nice storage/bait tank in the rear
I used this area to throw all our keeper crabs in.  The bungees kept the crabs from crawling out.
Tons of mounts for accessories
Cool color choices

Neither Here or There...
Cheap Paddles
They work, but better to upgrade
Seats are okay
Somewhat comfort, but better to upgrade something for my back/butt

Then there's the CONs...
Does not Track well... AT ALL...
Really hard to keep the thing straight.  Was worse when I tried to go on it solo.
Scupper Holes do next to nothing
The location of the scupper holes are too far forward of the lowest part of the seats.  So water would collect and you would be sitting in a bucket of water.
Buoyancy Issue?
I'm not sure if it was our weight or the sides of the kayak aren't high, but even with small 1-2' waves from the wake of a boat was enough to get water inside the yak.  Coupled with the scupper hole issue, now I'm soaking/sitting/swimming in a puddle.
Water getting inside the storage area
After Saturday's opener, it was a pain to lift it back into my truck.  I hear water sloshing inside the yak.  I emptied nearly 1/2 gallon of seawater from the drain plug.  This is caused by the storage panels not having a rubber seal/grommet to make a water tight seal.  Since there's water pooling in the seating area, the storage panels are partially submerged in water and water slowly seeps into the main hull.
**I have already fixed this issue with some foam and rubber gaskets.  Took the yak out today and no water in the hull**

So with all that said, I'm thinking about selling it.  Its not nearly comparable to my Trident 13 and falls short of what I need in an ocean tandem kayak.  More often than not, the SF Bay and ocean will have some chop, boat wakes, and strong currents, and my wife/I need something that can handle those situations.  I believe this kayak would be great for lakes, reservoirs, or anything flat water.

I will be posting this kayak up for sale soon.

Price:  $600
Shipping from Los Angeles to Berkeley: $75

Fishing Pics / What is this animal???
« on: May 19, 2017, 05:00:32 PM »
I was at Bodega this morning pumping for ghost shrimp.  Looking for typical 1/2"-3/4" holes.  On my 3rd pump, this weird worm type thing came out.  Had to be at least 1.5" in diameter and about 6-7" long.

I've never encounter this creature before.  Hoping someone can shed some light.  Scared the crap outta me when I initially saw it.

I'm driving and supporting my wife as she runs her first marathon in South Lake Tahoe this Sunday.
I'm bringing my kayak with me and will try to fish any free time that I have.  Does anyone have recommendations on where to go or wants to meet up?

Just looking on Google Maps, looks I have a few choices.
1) Ice House Reservoir
2) Caples Lake
3) Echo Lakes?
4) Fallen Leaf

Any intel is greatly appreciated.  I'm not limited to the lakes above.  Willing to hike and fish creeks/rivers too.

Thanks,

Kevin

General Fishing Tips / Rock Crab in Monterey/Carmel?
« on: June 30, 2016, 05:02:48 PM »
My fiancé and I will be in Carmel for the weekend and I'd like to get some rock crab for her (she likes cioppino made with red rock crabs).  Anyone know a good area to try?

I have kayaks and crab pots or willing to fish off piers as well.  Likely with try fishing while pots/traps soak.

Anyone want to meet up?  Always happy to meet new faces.  Will share some cioppino if we catch any.

Thanks!

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Doran Beach 6/25
« on: June 23, 2016, 09:47:27 PM »
This is my last weekend as a bachelor.  I'm getting married very soon and the fiance has given me the okay to take off all weekend.  Planning to camp, kayak, fish, and try for dungies before the season ends.

Anyone else going to be out there?  Any tips on where?  I haven't dropped traps at Doran for a few years.  What else is there to target?  RF?  Halibuts?

Planning on launching by 6am.
