General Fishing Tips / La Jolla Report July 1, 2, 3 and 5
« on: May 04, 2022, 04:17:28 PM »
My wife and I have some spare time this summer and are considering visiting friends in San Diego. Of coarse, with my one track fishing mind, Ill be bringing my kayak and gear. I would appreciate some advise about where to launch, where to fish, and what to target.
Also, as it will be my birthday, I've been given the greenlight to schedule a charter.  Id love to hear your thoughts/advise if you have local knowledge.

Well that really sucks. The Revo 16 is best all around ocean fishing yak on the market IMO

Did Hobie stop making the Revo 16?  That would be a travesty :smt012

Is this low pressure system which is forecast to remain in place for at least a couple more days, likely to push the tuna away from the Monterey bay area?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: wheeleze strapping

I just stretch a single rubber bungy cord from one side of the wheel-eze fame across the top of the kayak to the other side of the frame. Works well for me, even on steep/uneven terrain. Super quick to strap and unstrap too.

Sold the entire kit for $600.   Deal of the year :smt001

Last year when the BF came I bought this entry level setup and put 400 yards of PowerPro 80 on it.  Probably not heavy enough and under-adequate line capacity for the fish we are seeing, but its alot bigger than anything else I have. I trolled cedar plugs and Rapalas from a power boat off Pt lobos/Garrapata area last season, but haven't had time to make the effort yet this year, but I would be honored to get my ass whooped by a big BF.

Excellent information, but he doesn't specify a setup for trolling cedar plugs and Rapalas for 100lbs class fish. This and live bait seem to be the ticket locally. Weekend warriors like myself lack the time to make bait the day before a tuna search trip. Any recommendations for an appropriate trolling set up for the hundred pound class fish we are seeing?

I have two Creek Company ODC 816 Pontoon Boats for sale. One has been used once, the other has never been used. Also have 2 sets of Force Fins for sale. Willing to sell everything separately or together. If you are interested in any combination of these items make me an offer.

Don't leave your stuff outside unsecured.
OC ain't what it used to be.

😔 Seems nowhere is anymore. Thanks Tote. I'll be on guard. Packed up my cable lock

Thanks for the advise Chadrock.  We will be at the campground so I will just plan on launching there.
Jim. Such a bummer we are going to miss each other. I would have loved to met up and fish with you. Sean mentioned making plans to fish with you this week. I'm sorry I'll miss that. Chelsey and I miss having a friend so close in the neighborhood. Hope you are well. Where are you living now? Sac? Fresno?  Please let us know if next time you are in the area.

Is Ocean Cove proper the best place to launch?  Ive hear alot about Timber cove and Stillwater.  Where would you rather launch?

My wife and daughter and I are planning on arriving Tuesday mid day at Ocean Cove. If we can secure a campsite, we can stay as late as Saturday.  Ill have my kayak and gear with me and plan to get at least a couple morning sessions in.  I do not know the area and have never launched there before. My Shark Shield just died after 6 seasons of regular use, and their inventory is currently backlogged a couple months. It would be great to have some company with some local knowledge. So, anybody planning on fishing this week?  The forecast is looking good. Im game for salmon trolling or bottom fishing.   :smt006
