Kayak Fly Fishing / 11/5 SanJoaquin
« on: November 05, 2022, 03:40:08 PM »
Went down river from Eddo’s. Drifted outgoing morning tide. Kind of day when you start making deals in your head “…if I could just catch one..” and that’s what I got.  One bite, one fish about 15” maybe. A couple boats fishing the north side of the river. Didn’t see much going on. The wind was just manageable for casting.

Kayak Fly Fishing / 10/30 San Joaquin
« on: October 30, 2022, 09:00:34 PM »
Fished out of Korth's this morning.  Went upstream on the San Joaquin.  A pretty slow day for me.  I think I caught 3 fish.  All undersized, the biggest was maybe 14".  Caught 2 on topwater and 1 on streamer.  A beautiful morning- all hazy and foggy.  The hunters were going off on Venice Island.  I fished upstream past potato slough on the incoming tide.  Back to the truck around 11 am.  Not a lot of traffic on the water.  Coming over Antioch bridge, I didn't see many boats on the water.  Not many boats on water in Rio Vista either.

Kayak Fly Fishing / Saturday Delta

Couple of shakers out on the San Joaquin on Saturday.  Looking for moving water on the incoming tide.  Pretty high tide as I could see over the levees.

Kayak Fly Fishing / Steamboat Slough: 8/29/2021
« on: August 29, 2021, 01:04:17 PM »
Went out of Hogback and went upstream to the ferry.  Caught a few stripping streamers today.  Had a few teases on the deer hair bass bug, but no takers.  It's been a while since I caught a striper.  Got a keeper today ~21".

Kayak Fly Fishing / Delta: White Slough
« on: July 17, 2021, 04:46:39 PM »
Launched out of King Island around 5:30 this morning and made my way out White Slough to the San Joaquin.  Top water on deer hair bass bug was good until about 0700.  (my second attempt at tying a bass bug.  Not the best, but the fish didn't seem to care.  :smt001) Man the top water fly rod thing is something else.  I missed a lot of fish- have to stop that Texas rigged worm hookset on the fly rod....Switched over to sink tip and streamer after that.  I didn't catch anything big but caught enough that I lost count - all largemouth.  Hooked one small striper.  A couple small boats trolling in white slough right said they caught a couple stripers.

Kayak Fly Fishing / delta: windy weekend
« on: June 28, 2021, 11:20:03 AM »
Exploring the delta a little more this weekend.

Saturday fished the San Joaquin and launched out of Dos Reis Park in Lathrop.  I fished a couple hours down river and didn't get one bite.  Packed up and launched out of the city launch in Rio Vista and peddled up past the bridge.   Got a couple small largemouth.
Sunday launched out of Viera's ($20....!).  Peddled up the Sac past the ferry.  Pretty tiring peddling against current and tide.  Mental note not to do that again.  Water was pretty muddy in both locations.

No fish of size and no stripers.  A pretty frustrating weekend of wind and current.

Anyone fly fish for stripers inside the bay and care to give a tip on where to start? - I've only been fishing the freshwater and am wondering if the bay proper would be better during summer with cooler water out there.

Kayak Fly Fishing / Delta stripers
« on: June 02, 2021, 11:11:25 AM »
Saturday and Monday out on the San Joaquin again.  Lots of small stripers - nothing keeper sized - but enough of them to make it interesting.  The breeze wasn't the hurricane of the last two months so I fished the fly both days.  Surprisingly, the morning boat traffic wasn't too bad, but late morning was the time to get off water with the personal watercraft buzzing around like f'ing yellowjackets...

Got to start getting saltwater game together and start exploring further west and see about some bigger fish.

Kayak Fly Fishing / Sunday Stripers - San Joaquin 4/18/2021
« on: April 19, 2021, 11:10:59 AM »
Fished out on the San Joaquin on Sunday.  Caught 7 stripers in about 4 hours in the morning.  All were undersized with exception of maybe one.  They were particularly feisty and I thought all were larger fish until I saw them.  A couple of larger followers when fish were on.  One close encounter with a sea lion while fish was on.  Swooped fish into kayak and let if flop about until I thought coast was clear.  All fish caught on the riprap where drop off to deep water was quick.  I didn't catch any fish in the shallows.  The fish didn't care for a steady retrieve.  All came on pause between strips on erratic retrieve.

Out going tide and the current wasn't very strong current.  Water temp was about 63F.  Nice morning out.  A little breeze but not enough to mess with casting, just enough to cool off.

Unless the wind comes up, I'm going to poke around Howe Ave Saturday morning, if anyone wants to join up.  I will try and get there 7-8.  I'll launch at Howe and paddle up towards Watt and drift back down.  I'll be in green Native Titan stripping streamers.

Just wondering if anyone regularly takes their dog on kayak when fishing?  Any tips?

Same old - stripping a streamer out on the San Joaquin near the Moke.

Water temp was 49, a couple degrees warmer than New Year's.  Not many boats out, which was nice.   Only one trailer in the parking lot.  Tide was higher than I've seen in a while - I could see over the levee.  Current was really moving today.  Fished the top of the incoming tide and a little of start of the outgoing.  Got a few nice grabs, either that or those rocks sure tug hard... I suck at the strip set.

I broke a rod section due to not checking my ferrules and it loosened up after a couple hours fishing.  Sucks.  Will send in to TFO to have them check over and repair.

My "fish story" is I caught a nice one - >24".  A mishap with the lipgrip and bye-bye so no pic of that one.  Sure put a nice bend in the rod.   :smt001
The pike minnow was a leaper.  Surprised me.  I know some consider a "junk" fish, but they are way more interesting to catch than largemouth.  It sure crushed my fly.

Me thinks I'll keep up with the stripers over winter...

Kayak Fly Fishing / Happy New Year: San Joaquin - 1/1/2021
« on: January 02, 2021, 09:32:15 AM »
Happy New Year!  I am glad to see 2020 go...  I fished fairly hard yesterday.  I got 2 small stripers.  I was getting worried about starting off the new year with a blank.  Hopefully good fishing omens for 2021.  Water temp was about 47.5.  Small outgoing tide until 1-ish.  Caught both within 30 min of each other on riprap of main San Joaquin as the tide started to change.  The second had a friend along side.  I really need to try double fly.

A little rain going on today.  Time to break out the spey gear and get my head into steelhead mode.

Kayak Fly Fishing / San Joaquin - 11/27/2020
« on: November 27, 2020, 05:26:30 PM »
Good day on the San Joaquin today.  Most of my fish came on incoming tide.  Looking for areas with a good current.  Caught a couple pike minnows too but didn't take pictures of those.  They sure thump a fly though.  I didn't have fish finder with me so don't know the water temp, but sure feels cold.
