People of the Realm. :smt006

I recently had this issue. Being a fly fisherman, my go to knot for connecting two line of different sizes was always a uni to uni knot, which worked great.  During recent striper excursions, inside the bay, i found out that braid does not last forever.  I spooled my bait cast reel with a different brand of braid and connected my leader with a uni-uni knot.  I lost a couple of lures because the knot was cutting my fluorocarbon. I changed to the albright, which also cut my line.  I discovered this new way of tying a kind of GT knot.  I was amazed that the breaking strength of the knot superseded the strength of the line of both lines.
The conclusions is that sometimes, one knot dose not work on all lines.  Tie the easiest knot, try to break it to  test the breaking strength of the knot.  Do it a few times.  Then work your way up to a harder knot.
My knot broke at about 17lb when tying a uni-uni knot to my 25lb braid to 30lb fluorocarbon.  The albright broke at the knot at about 15lb.  The improved albright broke at the knot at about 20lb. I couldn't break the GT knot with the same ease that I was able to break the other knots.  After re-rigging to grip the line better, I was able to break the line, not at the knot, but at a weak point on the braid it at about 35lb.
Good Luck

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: propane heater advise
« on: April 14, 2012, 03:25:49 AM »
Hey partner,
My fishing buddy and I have camped in 10 degree weather with comfort using my small portable heater in a milk crate to keep it contained, in case of tipping.  Then to prevent hot spots while sleeping we attach a small fan to the roof of my tent to circulate the air.
A couple years later he bought a Big Buddy heater that takes a bottle or you can attach a 20lb tank( that we leave outside the tent and run the hose through the window.  It has a battery operated fan which works sweet.
The Big Buddy works well in a large tent like a 6 man or bigger, but would be uncomfortably hot in a small tent.
I understand that all heaters burn "clean" and don't leave any carbon monoxide. Don't know if I truly believe that although I never woke up feeling ill.  But for added insurance I bought a battery operated carbon monoxide detector and always have it in my tent when sleeping.  So far so good.
 Cheers

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: refilling 16 oz propane tanks
« on: April 14, 2012, 02:50:19 AM »
I bought my refiller adapter about 15 years ago and love it. It saved me in money and time (last min driving to Sports Mart). I asked for advise from a refill station that also specialized in welding items. I found that the best way to refill a bottle is to first attach your adapter to your tank then attach you bottle(not trying to insult your intelligence).  Then shake your tank a little, and invert it, upside down, and turn on your valve.  You'll hear the transfer of gas for a second.  The process should take about 45 to 60 min. Then shut off the valve before removing your bottle, you'll always remember after the first time you forget.  If you leave it for too long (hours) you'll find the bottle heavy with fuel but with little pressure. After I remove it i check the valve for leaks. Since I have a bad habit of leaving the bottles out in the weather while camping and the valve can get a little rust.  Little wd40 and a quick press with a nail fixes that.
Also, for some reason , not all your bottle will refill. You can have 6 Coleman bottles and only 3-4 will refill.
 Hope this helps
 Good luck
