General Talk / Navigating Navionics
« on: May 23, 2024, 05:00:03 PM »
Just got Navionics app
Have the Humminbird 688ci HD & Apple phone and iPad
Looking for a good tutorial on using it either from you all or YouTube University or ...
Mostly fish Monterey Bay waters
Thanks :smt003

Water temp has been in the low 50's and upper 40's since the wind and upwelling started, might have a little to do with the slower bite than last year
The halibut fishing has been tough here lately Im sure anyone trying around here will tell you. This time last year was 3 fish limits most days and this May its only been 1 or 2 halibut bites per trip.

Way to get after what you needed

I was in JGs for a few years at Manresa as a kid
My GFs kiddos attend each year down in Monterey, her eldest just tried out to be an assistant this year
Good program imo

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Viewing squid on the fish finder
« on: April 23, 2024, 04:28:52 PM »
Squid show up as different marks at different times on different fishfinders, sure sign is a cormorant or sea lion surfacing with a squid in their mouth also look for Rizzos
Sometimes they dont show up at all, dont be afraid to drop blindly
Typical squid marks include loose scattered fuzz on the bottom, gentle curving streaks upwards in light blue (light grey for non-color units), and if theyre abundant they ball up but not like a dark thick cloud of fin bait more like a thin broad fog in the top 2/3s of the water column

CA Regulations / Re: Is RF open?
« on: April 20, 2024, 12:20:36 AM »
The way I read it, in the waters near me, Monterey Bay, we can fish 300 feet and deeper from now until April 30.  Anything shallower is still closed.  Come May 1st until September 30th , we can fish 120 feet and shallower only.  Then all October is only 300 and deeper, November is back to only 120 and shallower and December is back to only 300 and deeper.
Is this how others interpret this?

General Talk / Re: Easter
« on: March 31, 2024, 10:56:44 AM »
Figuring out which Sunday Easter will land on every year - maybe the only thing more complicated than the fishing regulations!

Happy Easter, bros.   :smt001

Interesting to me how Easter is relative to the lunar calendar as other major religions have lunar ties as well

How I understand it:
1st, the spring equinox occurs
2nd, the first full moon after the equinox
3rd, the Sunday following that full moon is Easter Sunday

Happy Easter my fishy friends
