I encourage you to taste as you go, over several years even.  It's amazing how something that tastes like shit can end up pretty damn good after a couple years.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Fillet Queen

How about that white king?!  I've caught a couple at the Cove.  "Bait eater", a local said when he saw it.

White kings aren't white because of diet.  It is a genetic variation that cause them not to be able to process carotenes correctly.  I brought a few filets home from Kodiak recently.

CA Regulations / Re: are they coming for our hoop nets?
« on: September 05, 2024, 06:52:19 PM »
It looks to be written under the commercial phrasing.

I did not see the sentence above the commercial paragraph.

Bummer

What "commercial paragraph"?

And, we need to distinguish between commercial crabbers and commercial passenger fishing vessels.

Does that look like a commercial consideration, which would still be a blow…

What do you mean by "commercial consideration"?

From the original post ... "proposed rulemaking to amend recreational crab gear regulations".

General Talk / Re: Ft Bragg Albacore Charter ?
« on: August 30, 2024, 07:00:49 PM »
Reports on CS are starting to get interesting... seems pretty good off of HMB ~30 miles out for albacore.

Wanted to ask the group, seems like this thread is decent without too much of a threadjack... Given the albacore are apparently hitting live bait (at least from the charter reports), what would be the main challenge in a mothership trip for albacore, pending you could book something like that?  It may be a bit expensive and somewhat logistically challenging, but assuming you get past that part, do you think it would be too difficult to get the boat where it needs to be, deploy the kayaks, and fish, or do you think the need to cover ground would make this idea stupid and just a method to spend all your money staying in one spot not catching shit?

Having done an albacore mothership trip … find an area of albacore, splash the kayaks, and troll diving plugs  and swim baits.  Jigging a swim bait also worked, but you can go on the troll with them to locate a school.

If you book a trip with Tyja and need another passenger I'm down to go.

I have one open spot with him on Saturday Sept 14.  Yours if you want it.

Do I really agree with Samantha Murray?  What is the world coming to?

I just watched the video.  In which it was said.

Erika Zavaleta said, "Enforcement and monitoring challenges is the primary challenge.

However, Samantha was quick to jump in that the memo also said something like, "The March recommendation was made with the sportfishing community INCLUDING the kayak committee.  Must continue to recognize the impact on quillback."

What are your recommendations to address these deficiencies?

Thanks for the update Paul.  Good effort.  On what grounds was it rejected?

Are you feeling ok, Sonny?

There are way more, and better, spots accessible via boat than the public spots.

General Talk / Re: canning tuna?
« on: July 29, 2024, 12:31:33 PM »
Going to do another bigger batch before returning the cooker and try a few more seasoning/flavoring options like smoking the tuna first.

I just finished up a batch of bellies and collars, hot smoking at 225 for 1.5 hours to impart smoke flavor, but also to render some of the fat a bit.  Then canned as normal, after picking the meat off the collars.  No brining before smoking, pinch of salt in the can just like I normally do.  Turned out great.

Got to go ashore in Nootka today. It’s the point of first contact between Eropeans and Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation. Pretty cool lighthouse. The highlight was visiting Sandford Williams wood carving studio. His work is world renowned, and pretty incredible to see in person. Seems like he uses few to no power tools and does everything by hand. He had few pieces for sale as he reported spending a lot of time on commissioned totem poles for fishing lodges.

He was working on a beautiful paddle with a salmon pattern when we visited. On the way out, we got invited to join a cougar hunt. It was getting a bit too interested in some of the young campers last night, a shot scared it off, but all of the little ones were waiting on tue dock to get ferried out as a precaution. As we were leaving, one of the year round residents was heading off to find it and finish it off. If only I had the right footwear  :smt005

This brings back memories.  Probably 15 years ago, we got on ferried over to Yuquot, Nootka with 3 kayaks, camped there and fished from there.  Good times.

I was fantasizing about doing something like that, how was there good fishing in kayak range? I know the Salmon can hang tight to Friendly Cove…was Sandford there when you visited? If so, based on what he told us he would have been in his beach front shop.

I guess we did it in 2007.  https://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=347.0
