Yesterday I drove past Steven's creek reservoir and I remembered a time I had been there to fish with Joel after his diagnosis and wasn't kayaking much. So today I decided that I'd bring a fishing pole when running some errands and I'd drop by and cast a line for the heck of it and remember old times.

That time I was with Joel there was a floating dock to tie up too when you launched, but alas it's gone now. But I remember that when Joel and I were there he was on that dock and just casting off the end while I was tossing a lure along the shore. At one point he started yelling for me to come quick, he had a huge bass on the line! I quickly reeled up and raced over to the dock and dove to the ground and made a feeble attempt to lip that bass but just as I reached it shook free with a good splash. Joel and I laughed so hard and then he told me how he was casting just a few feet on each side of the dock hoping a monster bass was there to bite his bait, and he was right.

Today I rigged a sort of similar creature bait, waled to the edge where the dock ramp would have been and made my first cast, visualizing the it would land just to the left of the dock if it was there. To my surprise it was fish on! Albeit not a monster, not more than a pound small mouth took the bait. I didn't want to harm it and fumbled getting a picture and it flopped itself free but I got a quick Pic before it went away.

It was the only fish I landed, but it made my day to feel like I was there with Joel and to enjoy a simple pleasure on a beautiful day. I miss him often, and today even more. His favorite phrase was Live Life, which we can all use a reminder once in a while to live and enjoy this life, it is the only one we have.

No other fish but snapped a few pics of the full lake. It's closed of course to boating which is unfortunate. It used to be the spot I would test out a new yak or bring newbies to fish. Still good for a quick shore pounding though.

General Talk / Help fix my generator
« on: March 12, 2025, 03:34:53 PM »
I couldn't get my generator to start up today testing it in prep for the storm. Last time it ran a month ago it sounded like it was struggling a bit. I pulled the spark plug and it was pretty dirty so got a replacement, but still pull the cord and I can't get it to start.  I did put it in the plug and ground it and pulling the cord you see spark.

It almost started once but puttered out really quickly. I dumped the fuel tank and am letting it dry out a bit now and have fresh 91 octane to put back in.  However watching some videos on generator repair it seems like I should maybe try a carburetor cleaner sprayed in through the air filter intake port to see if that helps? Another suggestion from YT was to get engine starter fluid to try and start up that way instead of the gas.  Appreciate some advice, i'm the kind of guy that can change the oil and filters and rotate the tires but not experienced in engines.

Thanks in advance!  :smt006

General Talk / Tracks on my hike, cat?

After a workout I decided to do a trail on my way home. Noticed these fairly big tracks and got me thinking maybe it's a mountain lion? Any ideas?

Who might be interested in an old fashioned grunion run this year?  The first dates are in ~6 weeks so plenty of time to plan. We scored next to zero on our first attempt years ago  :smt005  Maybe find a spot down south where grunion are more abundant?  Reply if you are at all interested!

Wanted To Buy / Need a new Truck
« on: January 22, 2025, 09:49:53 AM »
It appears that my front rotors are bad again, discovered on the way to work yesterday that breaking at higher than 30 gets some violent shaking.  Think it's time that I get something to replace my old and trusty beater of a 4Runner.  I've tried for a couple years now to think of what the best replacement would be, but always concerned with price, fuel efficiency, and how old of one to buy (new is just too much).  It seems that the best fuel economy with 4x4 and towing capacity is a Tacoma, but I could be wrong.  A Sequoia is very tempting, as they are cheaper than Tacoma's and have more room than my 4Runner.  But the extra fuel costs are concerning to me for a V8.  I don't need to tow a lot, but I would like to tow something a little bigger than my current trailer. I guess other trucks might fit the bill like an F150, although I've trusted that my Toyota will last a very long time. Anyone have something they are willing to part with, or suggestions on other options would be very appreciated!

They are brand new and I just don't think I'll get around to hunting for herring this year.  If anyone would like them I'll sell the 4ft for $30 and the 6ft for $45 available this weekend at Doran or we can find a time during the week to hand off from the Peninsula to the South Bay during the week.

General Talk / My trip to Vietnam (loooooong post)
« on: January 03, 2025, 12:50:27 PM »
This year my work granted me a 28 day sabbatical leave after being with the company for seven years.  I decided early in the year that I would focus on my health and weight loss for the year and as a reward for accomplishing my goals that I would set out on an epic adventure to a foreign land, first time in a new country since I was very young.  Many friends have told me how awesome it is in Vietnam for many years, from the beautiful landscapes, bustling cities, incredible (and cheap) food, and of course the super friendly people, I decided that I would go there for the entire trip.  I had only some loose plans of where I wanted to visit, the flight from SFO to Ho Chi Minh City (yet locals still refer to it as Saigon) was the logical place to start.  The flight being 16.5 hours, with an +13 hours time change, leaving at 9:00pm and arriving at 5:00am was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be.  However the jet lag and lack of sleep is definitely difficult, and arriving so early when you cannot check in until 2:00 leaves you without sleep for what feels like a week.  After dropping my bags off at the hotel I hit the streets and wandered around the blocks taking in the scenery of the area.  I chose to stay in D1 near the Ben Thanh Market, known as a place to buy virtually anything and haggle people on price, it's full of places to eat and shop for many blocks around.  I had my very first bowl of Pho? at a famous Michelin Star restaurant popularized by Anthony Bordain, but was not as impressed as I though I would be with the flavor for being half way around the world.  I eventually got to check in and hang out at the bar on top of the Hotel and had my first beer and finally was off to sleep for something like 12+ hours.

General Talk / 20 Years of NCKA!
« on: December 19, 2024, 11:17:06 AM »
Earlier this month we passed the 20 year mark of NCKA's official anniversary!

Thanks to this site many people have learned to kayak, fish, camp, cook, compete in tournaments, and so many other things I cannot even begin to list them all.  I've made so many friends, learned so many lessons, shared so many meals, drank so many drinks, cooked so many fish, toked so many joints, ripped so many lips, launched so many spots, camped so many places, and on and on and on.  So much for me to be thankful for that someone one day said I should join this group of kayakers and learn how to fish, as it truly changed my life for the better.

Big huge and many thanks to PolePole and Bushy for keeping this site up and running. To Bill for starting this crazy madness. And to the many Moderators and Admins (all of them before me) who have kept the site clean and free of bs over the years.  Another huge thanks to the many members that bring many people together for fishing tournaments and potlucks.  And even more thanks to all the members that are here posting up a report on their outing, asking questions and giving answers and so freely sharing their knowledge of kayak fishing.  All of you are a part of what makes this a great community to be a part of :smt006

The forum has some stats that are pretty impressive showing the long time dedication of some members to carrying on the stoke of kayak fishing.

They deserve some extra applause for being so consistent in delivering the stoke of NCKA above and beyond.

Fish Talk / Anchovey Die Off in SC Harbor
« on: October 19, 2024, 01:18:25 AM »

Santa Cruz Port District
Notice of Anchovy Die-Off

October 18, 2024

Dear Harbor Users,

This evening, a large influx of anchovies depleted oxygen levels in the harbor causing a die-off in the south harbor area. Staff is currently in the process of assessing the extent of the fish die-off and initiating a clean-up response.

Resources are being mobilized and we will update this notice as the situation evolves.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we undertake the clean-up efforts.

General Talk / Demasted while sailing on a Hobiecat
« on: October 12, 2024, 04:26:59 PM »
Today I tried thought I had the last parts I needed to reassemble my rudder system and thanks to tedski for the bolt removal help I went to the harbor and went to work on it. In the end I found the bolts I had ordered were too small so I'll need to go back with the right bolts and finish the job. But while there it was a club BBQ for the Hobie club I joined and another member said he'd take me out for a sail so I decided to join him.

It was a bit foggy still at 1pm and a bit of swell so laughing of the beach required timing the sets but we nailed it and had a smooth launch. We booked it up to the wharf and back a few times and was having a great time in decent but not very strong wind we whipped across the water easily faster than any other boats out there they really haul ass even in light wind.

On a broad reach we had been running from the wharf back to the harbor when all of a sudden hear a pop and the mast fell and the jib was also stuck und the boat. Couple boaters saw and came to out aid but with the mast off 90 degrees and the sail in the water we couldn't get the bot offering us help to get the hull to turn. They actually decided to call harbor patrol and handed the situation off to them. We were then directed to get the mast out of the water and get the jib untied and then we were finally able to get towed in slowly into the harbor. The patrol officer then took me aside after we got the bot on wheels and off the ramp that it's gotta be the 6th time they have had to rescue him and doesn't suggest I go out with him again.

The sound of the pop was the clevis pin that holds the   side stay in place. It is heald in with a split ring and are notorious for this happening. The common fix is to wrap the stay pin and split ring in electrical tape so it can't come out. I can say I'll be sure all my hardware has new split rings and wrap them up.

Craftsmen's Corner / Cheap portable aerator 12v conversion
« on: September 11, 2024, 11:32:37 AM »
I'm a big fan of not wasting money on disposable batteries and especially buying D batteries for camping has been a long time hatred of mine.  I decided to try a using a small converter to replace the batteries for my bait pump, and it seems to have worked out fine.  A cheap pump and a 12v to 3v converter, a 12v cigarette lighter adapter cord I had lying around and some connectors, I can now plug it in my lighter, or use my fish finder battery.
