General Talk / Re: Need help with trailer setup for Hobie Outback
« on: February 02, 2025, 06:36:36 PM »
When I transport my kayaks I always turn them upside down and just strap them down with cam straps. I notice few people do this but it is very simple and you don't have to worry about deforming the hull or suffering on rough roads. It only takes a few seconds to turn them over after I slide them up onto the trailer. I would turn them upside down anyway to get all the water out of the rod holder holes. Of course if you have stuff permanently mounted that would be in the way this may not be an option.

CA Regulations / Re: 2025 Rockfish Regs are Up

JP, that's not how I'm reading it. For the purposes of the regs, "Nearshore" is a category of rockfish species. Note the column on the right which includes lingcod still has20 fathom and inshore take allowed  May-Sep and Nov.

Thanks for clarifying. I didn't read it carefully enough.

As I read it you cannot retain lingcod, vermillion or canary when fishing nearshore. Someone please tell me I'm wrong:

General Talk / Re: Rods & reels

I just checked and I have 9. I feel so inadequate. But, if I make all combinations of those 9 rods and reels I have 81 combinations. I'm feeling better now  :smt002
Does that mean wormguy has 2916 combos? :smt006
Thanks Eddie. Now I feel even more inadequate.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Top Loading Kayak on Car

Another tip that may be useful. I load my kayak, Hobie Outback, upside down so I don't have to worry about cradles or deforming the hull. If you have gear permanently affixed to the top that may not work for you.

I use a Rhino Rack T loader and I really like it. It is very easy to load on top and it will not slide off. I also had a kayak slide off when I was just using the roof. I use it with a Honda CRV and I can still open the back if I pull the rack down (it has a joint at the bottom). Note that you can pull the rack down with the kayak on top but you can't pull it down after you tie the kayak down.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Lead-free sinking crab rope?
« on: December 03, 2024, 10:20:05 AM »
I'm still looking for the ideal line for crabbing, and just saw a non-lead sinking option on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/KUFA-Non-leaded-Sinking-Line-SL-1/dp/B00EWJKJR4

Anyone tried this?

I think my ideal line would be stiff but with no memory, and pretty thin, maybe 3/16" or 1/4".

I have used the 5/16 size of that non-leaded sinking line. It is made from nylon so it sinks. It does not sink as fast a lead core line but it does sink. I find it a bit harder to coil neatly because it is very flexible. The lead core line is stiffer so it coils neater. It is quite a bit cheaper than the leaded line and it does not contain lead which is a plus.

Safety First / Re: Acceptable forecast for beginners
« on: November 13, 2024, 09:55:48 PM »
Sunday looks good right now. That said, it is only a window of good weather with the swell increasing a lot at the end of the day which is not ideal. If you do go just be ready to head in if conditions start to deteriorate and don't venture too far from the harbor. Hope you getum!

What are you looking at for the swell forecast? I see 3 at 18 sec on Willy Weather. That would pretty much look flat.

I look at Willy Weather and Windy. Both say it picks up to 7' by midnight. So long as the window doesn't change it's no problem and it will be great day. I just suggest to be aware in case the swell comes in earlier.

Interesting. I wonder if a light in each scupper hole would be enough.

I'm also an avid Windy user. You can see 6 different wind models when you click on the wind view at the bottom. I find ECMWF is good for most places but GFS seems more accurate sometimes. In any case, when all the models agree it gives me more confidence in the forecast. The days when all the models say very low wind are the days when I bring my wife.
