General Fishing Tips / Re: Hobie drive fail
« on: September 27, 2024, 10:59:27 AM »
A couple of years ago, my 180 drive was squeaking really loud. I took it to CCK and they told me it needed a new spine.  They can do it for $200 labor plus parts.  I did the replacement myself.
Its been working fine ever since.

My last good trip in that area was Nov. 2015.  The kelp was gone but big fish were plentiful. The day of the attached picture, a couple of 40 inch lings were attacking 30 plus inch lings that I  hooked. Exciting to see the big ones boatside. I didnt keep any of them big ones.

Her 10 or 12 inch Cimeter knife looks interesting.  I will need one, if and when I catch a 30 lb fish locally.  :smt002

General Fishing Tips / Re: Large Live Bait Setup
« on: September 06, 2024, 09:56:00 AM »
Sliding bait rig, 4/0 octopus hook and 2/0 VMC 3x treble hook on 50 lb mono.
Tied to T Spreader rig with 25 lb breakaway leader for the weight.

If your bait gets chewed and not swallowed, its a small Ling.  The big ones will inhale your bait but you gotta find them first.

Eric - You should start posting Youtube videos of your trips. That would be awesome.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Wanting an opinion on getting a fishfinder
« on: September 02, 2024, 12:29:37 PM »
I am bit different having started with an Eagle Cuda 3.5 inch B&W screen FF/ GPS combo about 15 yrs ago. I like 7 and 9 inch screens since I do a lot of bottom fishing.

With the 20 fathom and 50 fathom regs in place, a bigger screen combined with a Navionics Platinum chip with relief shading has made my trips succesful. I can plan where to go and see the bottom contours clearly.  Yes it does cost more.

General Talk / Re: Unretiring
« on: August 27, 2024, 11:43:53 AM »
An important thing my Financial Advisor told me and hit a nerve. Most people end up spending most of their retirement funds to long term care. I experienced it with my Mom. She lived by herself after my Dad passed away. I had to hire a part-time caregiver then got to the point that she needed to be in a care home with 24 x 7 care.
Since we are living longer, another important thing to consider.

Sonny, a couple of suggestions.
1. Work with a Financial Advisor to give you guidance on your 401k, investments and cash accounts. A skilled FA will help you plan your finances both before and after retirement. I am working with one from Wells Fargo, he was also my deceased Mom's Financial Advisor.
2. If you don't have one yet, set up a living trust. This is typically done with an estate planning attorney. If something happens to you properties, bank accounts etc wont go into probate which can be messy and expensive.
