Yakkin yes squids are easily available. My friend was out on his boat today and they were thick in front of the aquarium as well. Also found a good amount in front of the tides hotel in 80ft last week while fishing for halibut.

Johnny I highly agree. Water clarity hasn’t been the greatest in the last month or so either but it did look better today than my last trip.

I launched from the coast guard around 830 this morning. I got into some squid and finbait right outside the harbor in 90ft and had two lines in the water a little after 9. The squid was 30-40ft down. I only grabbed about 20 squid for bait but I’m sure you could’ve filled buckets if that’s your thing. There were pacific Mack’s and smelt hanging around the same depth as well. Anyways I got on a decent halibut in 75ft about 30minutes into my bait soak. She measured 32” 14lb. I circled that spot a couple times and couldn’t find another one so I went closer to the structure and couldn’t keep the rockfish and lings away. I called it at about 1230. The halibut fishing has been tough here lately I’m sure anyone trying around here will tell you. This time last year was 3 fish limits most days and this May it’s only been 1 or 2 halibut bites per trip. Anyways that fish wasn’t picture worthy, but here’s two that I caught the end of April/early May that were. 42” 30lb and 41” 28lb.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Kill Bag Recommendations?

I have a reliable 36” kayak bag and absolutely love it. Holds multiple 40” halibut (just zip it up to the tail) or a rockfish/lingcod limit no problem. Would obviously be a problem with larger seabass or sharks. It holds 20lbs of ice for a few days. Only thing I don’t like is the zipper is not leak proof so if loading into a car or trunk it’s gotta be laid down zipper side up.

Heres what it looks like suspended on the fish finder.

I was out Saturday and have a waaay different report there was plenty of squid. I grabbed around 50 in a half hour or so and went fishing. There’s patches of squid from the coast guard beach to the red can. Most of it is  suspended 30-70ft down. I found it most abundant on Saturday just before the aquarium in 115ft of water but it moves around of course. You will have much more success if you leave your squid jig still for 3-4 seconds after it’s at the right depth before lifting up. Lifting up and down repeatedly is not the way to do it, let it sit for a few seconds before lifting.  Also, white glow beads, in my opinion, work better than green. Coyote bait and tackle has these sweet finesse squid jigs made by p-line for 10 bucks and they open at 6am it might be worth stopping by on the way down it’s in south San Jose/Morgan hill. Hope this helps

Here’s a school of sardines on bottom for reference.

Here’s a few photos from last may when the squid was thick. The first photo shows squid suspended and spread out, the second is what it looks like balled up on the bottom. This was peak squid season so these marks are really visible, later in the year as it fades away expect most of it to be on the bottom but in much smaller quantities. The marks on the bottom will be 1/4 the size of what you’re seeing in the second picture. Last year we were catching squid in December but it was all on the bottom like the second picture. I’m running a garmin echomap 9” btw. Also knowing the area helps distinguish potential squid marks from other fish marks. Over sand is where you want to be. The squid can be found from the coast guard beach to about a half mile past lovers point. It also comes in in front of the tides hotel. Depths range from 60-140.

Overall pretty slow day, not too much action but we did manage a few halibut.  We got on the water around 9 from the coast guard. We targeted the area off cannery row, from 100-130ft. Bait was VERY hard to come by. I didn’t get any bait until about 1030 when a school of sardines came on the fish finder around 80ft down and I was able to pull up 3. I dropped a couple times on squid marks and managed a few throughout the day on the sabiki, it wasn’t thick enough for me to want to designate a rod with a squid jig but they were there. Anyway, I walked the sardines for over an hour before I found a halibut. I got bit in about 120ft of water, and while I was bringing the fish up my other rod got hit but got away with my sardine. Ended up landing a nice 20lber but was out of bait at that point. I paddled around and got a few squid, which I sent down on the 3 way swivel. About 20 minutes go by and I hear Sonny say he’s on a big one, so paddle over to take a few pictures then my rod gets hit. I get a hook in the fish, feels good, got it about halfway off the bottom and my knot failed. I’m guessing it had a fray in it or the fishes teeth hit it just right but we’ll never know. After that I decided to check my other rod. I reel up and my squid caught another squid, trying to mate with it I guess, so I took it off and sent it back down. As soon as it hit the bottom it got hit by a hali. On the drop! Doesn’t get too much sweeter than that. I brought up a little 11lber and we pretty much called it a day.

I launched this morning from the coast guard around 9 in pretty much perfect conditions. Water was 55-56 and the clearest I’ve seen it in a while, probably 15ft of visibility. I hooked a left from the coast guard and made my way to cannery row. I fished pretty deep all day from 100-110ft. The bait was super hard to come by but managed 6 sardines throughout the day. I got some smaller jack mackeral too, in the 4in range, but I know better than to waste my time with those. First bite came around 945 and it felt heavy but popped off when I had it 20ft or so off the bottom. No doubt a big halibut. I marked that spot and went over it again and was able to stick an 18lber about 20 minutes later. Spent the rest of the day trying to find bait, then getting bait, then going back to that spot and missing fish. I repeated that cycle like 3 times before calling it a day. A lot of missed bites today, it’s almost like the fish were biting around my hooks on purpose!

December hali in the bay! Nice

Isn't "Todd W" ready for retirement?  How about "Halibut God"?!   :smt005

You are so dialed, bro.  Very nice job and super impressive season.   :smt001

I caught some nice ones in Humboldt Bay later in our season (Sep-Oct), but I haven't hit the 40" mark yet on Cali's.

I did get my ass handed to me by a twentyish pounder that probably went high 30's (inches).  It was heavy coming up, and when it hit the surface the white side was up because my big trailer treble was in its gill plate.  I netted it pretty easily, but when I grabbed the net frame in both hands it erupted and flipped itself over, twisting my net and escaping.  Last thing I saw was a big brown flying carpet - right out of my net!

I'm more of a gaff believer now.

I assume you gaffed both of these and most/all of your others this year?

What's your tally for the year?

Oh yea the nets get tricky especially with that heavy of a fish. I only use a gaff when landing now but it takes some practice, I’ve had plenty of missed gaff shots trust me! Usually if you get the halibut to lay out flat for you and hit them right in the guts and keep the head just out of water they stay pretty calm. Calm enough to get your stringer in their gills then it’s game over. I keep my stringer tied to my kayak handle with about two feet of rope on my right side since that’s the side I like to gaff it on. So after I stick em I pull em in close and everything’s right there.  But yea I bet there’s some big ones out there in humbolt, you’ll get a 40” eventually it’s all luck of the draw. Do you fish live bait out there? If you want some live bait tips I’ve tried it all! Lol And total for the year man idk I’d say around 40 or 50? I don’t keep track anymore.

Wowzers!! Congrats.  I didn’t know halibuts are still around this late in the season.

Yea in monterey I don’t think they don’t go anywhere. Some would say deeper in the winter, like these fish were caught in 90-100ft, but my buddy just got two in 50ft last week so who knows. There’s still bait around and the waters 58.

14
Damn!! I would have been so happy with the first one I’d call it a day to secure the win from seals, sharks etc. Way to keep your 2023 halibut streak going. What’s your skunk ratio?

Thanks man! I do get skunked maybe… 10-15% of the time this year? I want to say 2 or 3 skunks since april on the kayak, before that was spotty with all the storms we had I don’t remember getting out too much but I do remember getting a few in febuary. All the skunks came within the last month and a half that I can remember, and they’re my fault I got bit and didn’t get a hook in em. One trip I got sardines shredded 4 different times and couldn’t hook up.

Got on some jumbos today! I launched from the coast guard around 830  and conditions were perfect. Bait was somewhat hard to come by even tho my fish finder was lighting up, but managed a few sardines and squid. The 44” came on a live squid mid morning. About 30 minutes later in the same spot I got another one in the 20lb range.  As I’m putting the 2nd on my stringer both fish start thrashing around and I lost control of the 20lber and back to the bottom she went. I had no bait left at that point and didn’t find another sardine for around a half hour. I threw him down in around 90ft of water or so and took it for a walk and about 20 minutes later it got hit by a freight train. I thought for sure it was a shark the way it ran but after I got it straight up and down I could tell it was a big hali. That fish suprisingly fought me all the way up, and I got her on my light rod, it was a blast. Put an extra rope I had through the mouth and out the gills instead of fumbling around with the stringer again. 2 jumbos secured and called it a day after that. The 1st fish measured 44” 36lbs and the 2nd 42” 32lbs.
