Whale entanglements up, groups report

The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO >> Conservation groups are urging California officials to consider measures to prevent whale entanglements in fishing gear.

In a letter Tuesday to state fish and wildlife officials, Earthjustice, the Center for Biological Diversity and Oceana cite data from the National Marine Fisheries Service that shows 30 different whales were confirmed to have been entangled in fishing gear off the West coast in 2014. That’s nearly double the number in 2013.

The groups are urging state officials to consider closing fisheries in areas where whales are feeding and reducing the number of vertical fishing lines, among other measures.

State Department of Fish and Wildlife spokeswoman Jordan Traverso said the agency is aware of the issue, agrees that it warrants priority attention and is already engaged in consultations with various stakeholders.

Are they talking commercial, sport or both?  I don't think my vertical line pose much of a problem, but will we be included in any new regulation?

For Sale / Outback 4 sale
« on: December 30, 2014, 03:17:33 PM »
End of the year, time for "out with the old, in with the new!"  Parting with my old (2006) Hobie Outback to make room for the 2015 model.  Come with standard fin Mirage drive, Lowrance X-4 Pro fishfinder, seat, paddle and well plug.  Asking $950.  The kayak is currently in Chico.  Will deliver Chico/Redding area or to the 2015 Crabfest.  If interested, respond on this thread.  (It's the top yellow kayak in the photos)    SOMA

Tried Tommy Welborn's technique for lings last week at Albion and Russian Gulch.  What a difference from the barely legal I was used to catching.  Thank you Tommy!  Lings to 31 inches.

Four photos:

   2.  Tommy's big brother with nice vermillion.
   3.  31 inch ling.
   4.  Shameless promotion for Tommy's product.

CA Regulations / Taking kayak to remote shore for fishing
« on: August 12, 2014, 05:58:00 PM »
What is the CA F&G laws concerning using your kayak to get to a remote shore to fish when the boat fishing season is close?  How do you prove that your take was from the shore and not the kayak?

General Talk / Need a team for GS8!
« on: May 08, 2014, 01:21:27 PM »
My two man team just got dissolved.  My fishing partner was just put on the injured disabled list by his doctor.  That leaves me solo.  I need to be adopted by a team to meet the event regulations.  I'll be arriving on Wednesday the 14th for some pre-fishing and crabbing.  Anyone out there need to have a team member scapegoat?  SOMA
