General Fishing Tips / Re: Kill Bag Recommendations?« on: May 16, 2024, 07:28:36 AM »The only place for a kill bag is in the back, and that means that I have to give up on carrying a crate. That makes a lot of sense. I forget you real kayakers often mount the FF on the centerline where it is convenient When I'm skippering my pedal barge, it's off to the right and so the path to the bag on the bow is clear. Being a barge, it's easy for me to crawl around the entire deck. Thanks for the clarification! Now that you bring up the difference, though, also keep in mind the weight & balance difference. Mounting the bag aft of you keeps the center of buoyancy closer to your chair while the bow definitely shifts it forward. On my barge it's not that big of a deal, but it definitely plows through more waves than without it. Something to think about 3
General Fishing Tips / Re: Kill Bag Recommendations?« on: May 15, 2024, 07:54:15 AM »The only place for a kill bag is in the back, and that means that I have to give up on carrying a crate. I'm curious why is the bow not an option? That's where I run my kill bag and it's nice and convenient. That way all fish handling happens in front of my chair. I keep 2 clips. One to dangle during bleeding and then transfer to the clip in the kill bag so I don't accidentally knock a fish overboard from the kill bag. Ice goes in the kill bag while rigging up on shore and stays without water until the first fish. Then I add water to the bag with ice and fish. 4
Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Re: Recommendation/Suggestion/Advice Kindly Required« on: May 14, 2024, 06:03:58 PM »Just my 2 cents. I'm sorry my words come across as sharp. I intend for them to be blunt. You have to understand that it comes from a place of pulling dead bodies out of the water and returning them to their loved ones at the dock -- or worse not finding them at all and having to show up to their loved ones empty handed. In the vast majority of those cases, it was due to a lack of experience and poor judgement. Your actions leave a mark on everyone involved in your rescue and recovery. I've said it before and I'll say it again that your sense of adventure is inspiring. I agree, more than you can realize, on your points about old sayings, too. However, there's a difference between adventure and recklessness. I think the R2AK is a great aspiration, I just don't personally feel you're there yet. I think you should do more trips like your other ones that work up to the mileage of R2AK. Maybe do some shorter trips that are as remote as R2AK but shorter in distance. "Training" is a word that comes to mind. Think of it this way. Just because I ran a Turkey Trot two years ago and a 5k this year doesn't mean I'm ready to sign up for the Ironman. I hope that softens the sharpness some. You're an extremely valuable member of this community and you would leave a very large hole if something were to happen to you. 5

I hate to be a nay sayer and I don't intend for this to be mean or judgemental -- I hope you can take this as constructive, yet firm advice. Your last two trips showed that you are not experienced enough to do the R2AK trip. You were literally scared for your life in moderately severe conditions within immediate rescue range. The R2AK is the opposite of that. You had very near disaster moments due to poor judgement and lack of seamanship that could result in your death on the R2AK.
Remember that you may be 1-2 days away from rescue when you press your PLB button, if you can get your frozen hands to work. When you are malnourished and severely dehydrated, you won't have the sense to push the button because your brain will be starved. When you're not dressed properly and your crack reappears, your survivability in those waters will be measured in hours, not the days it will take to find you and rescue you. As evidenced in this thread so far, though, you will not heed this advice and you will do this trip anyway. So, before all else, make sure your family is whole and update your life insurance policy for current needs and costs so that your poor decisions don't financially burden them. Just my 2 cents. 6
Introductions / Re: Old guy and want opinions with a new sit on« on: May 10, 2024, 03:30:47 PM »I've been talking to a few fishermen who are using inflatables for fishing and are happy with them. This Tarpon 120 is just too heavy for me to car top. My body is just too beat up so I'll try an inflatable. I'll sell the Tarpon cheap to anyone here. Thinking $225. It's been used by my nephew the past years and me back in 2002 and no leaks or major scratches. Once you engage with the community more, you'll quickly get to 10 posts. Then you'll see the For Sale forums where you can post a listing for your Tarpon 120. 7
General Talk / Re: Coastside Net Pen Build« on: May 10, 2024, 02:04:18 PM »I'm always amazed that even with a relatively short time in the pens the smolts are able to imprint on HMB and return as adults to try to spawn, with really nowhere to go. This has always amazed and baffled me, as well. I also think about their return, thinking, "wtf... now what?!" right before that big sea lion hurls them through the air 8
Recipes / Roasted Trout with Fennel and French Green Lentils« on: May 07, 2024, 11:53:07 AM »
Here's one my wife and I have been working on lately. I've yet to fish freshwater, but we get McFarland Springs Rainbow Trout through our CSF for this one. It would work well with any trout or salmon, to be honest. This one is a great source of dietary fiber, protein and antioxidants!
1 cup French Green lentils 1 lb rainbow trout 2 tsp fresh dill leaves, torn 2 medium cloves garlic, crushed 2 tbsp olive oil 1 lemon, zested and juiced 1 lemon, sliced 1 medium fennel bulb, trimmed, cored, quartered and thinly sliced, fronds reserved 2 tsp non-pareil capers, rinsed 1 tsp Dijon mustard Rinse lentils under cold water, picking out any stones. Place in a medium saucepan with 2 1/2 cups of water and 1 tsp salt. Bring to boil; reduce to simmer; cover. Cook until tender, approximately 25-30 minutes. Drain excess water. In a small bowl, mix together the dill and garlic with 2 tsp olive oil. Preheat the oven to 400˚. Line a rimmed sheet pan with parchment paper. Cut the trout into 3-4 equal sized pieces, leaving the skin on. Remove pin bones. Lay the lemon slices down on the parchment in groups approximately the slice of your fish slices. Season fish with salt, then spread the garlic mixture on the meat side of the trout. Carefully lay the fish skin-side up on top of the lemon slices, then season skin generously with salt. Toss the fennel slices with remaining olive oil and scatter around fish slices. Roast for 5-8 minutes. Meanwhile, roughly chop the capers and put in a bowl with the mustard, lentils, lemon zest and juice; season with salt & pepper to taste and mix together. Add the roasted fennel to the bowl with the lentils and toss to combine. Distribute lentil-fennel mixture around fish on sheet pan and place under broiler for 3 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through and opaque, the fennel is tender and the lentils are piping hot. Serve straight away with the fennel fronds scattered over. 9
Places to Launch and Camp / Re: Checked out Capitola wharf and beach« on: May 04, 2024, 09:15:38 AM »Any idea when they are supposed to finish the repairs? The project's site says "through 2024." So, they should be finished by 2028 or so. 10
General Talk / Re: Kayak Storage or Rental?« on: April 23, 2024, 01:20:14 PM »A guy that used to fish stored his Kayak at HMB Kayak Co at one point. Not sure how much it cost. I feel seen... or is it attacked? I used to store at HMB Kayak. It was $100 per quarter in 2022. The price goes up a tiny bit every few years, so it may be more by now. You get an assigned spot on a rack. You have 24 hour access, but you still have to store all of your other gear at home or elsewhere. If you have any specific questions, I'd be glad to answer them if I can. You can email info@hmbkayak.com for more details, too. 11
CA Regulations / Re: New App for CDFW« on: April 04, 2024, 10:00:04 AM »Just downloaded it yesterday. Pretty cool. Hoping they add a location feature to the app too, like their website. Seems like an easy addition, use the phone location to display current regs for that spot. There is a separate app for this already... https://www.fishlegal.info/ Would be nice to see them merged, but at least it exists already. 12
General Talk / Re: USCG Proposing to Remove Mile Buoy - Santa Cruz - Voice opposition by 4/3/2024!« on: April 01, 2024, 07:53:37 AM »Whats the reason for removal ? Buoys aren't exactly cheap to maintain. Mile Buoy is also the only USCG maintained buoy near Santa Cruz with a single buoy off Ano Nuevo and then Moss Landing to the south. Fuel burn, crew time, etc. on a buoy tender capable of hoisting the sinker and maintaining the aid isn't cheap. So, periodically, the USCG assesses the needs of these aids as technology, use, etc. evolve. This was one of those cases. It's actually a stellar example of how our system works. The USCG can look at cost data and identify areas of saving and then put it to public comment and rely on the boating public to inform them if the need outweighs the cost. Of course, Mile Buoy is one of those aids where the need/utility certainly outweigh the cost and that was made abundantly clear to the USCG. You'll notice that they removed that aid from the proposal days before the public comment period even ended, highlighting how active the community was in making its needs known. 13

CA Regulations / Re: Proposed 2024 Groundfish Regulation Change Summary (3/22/2024)« on: March 29, 2024, 04:47:23 PM »Every party boat I've been on in the past has had a descender on board. The mates will descend a fish for the angler. The majority of them use the simple upside down milk crate with 10-15 lbs of lead on it. In my experience, the mates briefed passengers on what to do if they threw one back and it floated. I agree that education over anger is the right way. |
