General Talk / Lost AI Daggerboard
« on: January 22, 2023, 08:16:22 AM »
I dropped my daggerboard approaching the “old pier” launch yesterday at HMB. With the big tide swings it was close enough to shore that it was possible it got exposed in the minus tide but I had important family concerns all day and was not able to stay or wait it out.
Does anyone happen to have one they are willing to sell?

BTW crabbing is quite slow inside the reefs right now. In what are usually productive spots. My guess is that it is due to the commercial pressure. My only keepers were close to the jaws and were missing a claw so maybe they were commercial culls?

I left my #2 radio at or near the “old pier” launch on Saturday around noon. I remember seeing it sitting in the tank well after landing. I may have dumped it on the beach as I was carting up
If anyone found it and wants to get it to me please send a PM

Thanks

I’ll be camping with the fam Friday and Saturday nights if anyone is fishing Russian Gulch this weekend. Any offshore fishing for me will probably be limited to first couple hours after daybreak. The rest of the day just exploring the cove and forest with the fam. I’m finding conflicting info on conditions up there but Sunday looks to be the better day. Tips from those with experience in the area are welcome. We will be in a dune AI  and yellow OK Malibu 2xl

Anyone fishing Pigeon Point tomorrow AM? Conditions look like they could be pretty decent. Tide will be quite low at daybreak though, and I don't know if that will complicate the launch because of rocks, shore break, etc.

I was out in the beautiful conditions this morning at HMB, launching just after daybreak from the "old pier." I had one promar ambush ring that I had bought because of the current regs, and two regular rings or "hoop nets." I  worked and area that had been productive for me in years past, turning left out of the jaws and working my way south parallel to the beach in 35-40 fow. I was leapfrogging the pots as I went and it was a really slow pick. I started to work my way offshore somewhere between the green and red cans to where there was a group of a half or dozen or so kayakers on Hobies.  At that point my rings were all pretty close together and I was getting inpatient so I decided to just leave all 3 for longer soaks  and paddle out to a rockpile/kelp patty just inside the red can and have a sandwich and see if I could pick up some bottom fish. While I was out there there was some chatter on the radio that began with "hey, I found a submerged trap" and the following conversation (I'm paraphrasing) ensued. It not clear if it was just 2 people. Sounded more like 3 or 4 chimed in. I'm sure others who were out there heard it as well and may have a better recollection.
 "does it have a buoy?"
"Yeah, it was just submerged"
 "Maybe it's abandoned"
"Pull it"
"Is it a ring?"
"No, it's a trap., and it's full of crab! and they're huge!"
Is there a license# on the buoy?"
"Yeah. Come over here and check it out"
Shortly after that the radios went silent
I opted not to weigh in on the conversation even though there was not a ton of slack  in my rings when I last dropped them in 40 fow. At the time I thought "oh abandoned trap," not realizing at the time how odd it would be for an old abandoned trap to be full of live crab.
I was getting tired and concerned about wind picking up so I paddled back towards my rings.  As I was paddling in the group headed back towards the harbor.  It was still nice and calm and I could see two of my floats from over a quarter of a mile away without even looking at my GPS  and I picked those up (the two hoop nets). I paddled to the waypoint I had marked and my ambush ring was nowhere to be found. I traced my trail and scanned the area with binoculars before giving up. I was bummed since I only had one of those and I know they are really hard to come by now. It made the paddle back to the harbor even longer. At the parking I chatted for a few minutes with a gentleman in a Tacoma and told him about my missing ring. He had heard the conversation on the radio and was in the area and he was convinced it was mine. He said it was a Promar Ambush, but I'm not clear if he actually saw it.
Anyhow, this could all be a coincidence and my ring could still be out there. It was a 50' line minus what is used to tie both ends up and it was weighted with only a river rock from my garden that I threw in a bait bag. It could have walked until the float was under water and still be out there. I'm curious though if anyone else heard the conversation and what they made of it. Better yet, if someone on this board was part of that conversation it would be good to hear from you. If someone with good intentions rescued my equipment it would be great to get it back if that could be arranged. Or if anyone will be out there during the next week and runs across it-here are the details:
Promar ambush 32" outside ring with blue coating. Typical red and white float. There are a series of bolder recent numbers/letters. Those are from my Oregon 3-day shellfish license from my trip last month. In faded sharpie there should be my GO ID and either my initials or first name and first letter of last name "MC" or "Mark C" The float and trap are connected by weighted line.

General Fishing Tips / Where to find anchovies
« on: March 22, 2020, 09:26:59 PM »
Getting furloughed starting tomorrow and I'll suddenly have some time to fish. Anyone know where to find frozen Chovies or Herring? Obviously tray bait would be the preference but maybe one of the Asian markets has them by the lb?
I'm on the SF Penninsula but would probably travel 20 miles or so.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Trinidad 8/12-8/14
« on: August 17, 2016, 09:25:56 PM »
I was in Trinidad at a vacay rental with the family for a long weekend. I was overdue for my first real outing on big blue and thanks to NCKA I was already aware of the services of LoletaEric. I lured him away from the hot bites at Humboldt and Shelter cove to guide me out of Trinidad Bay on Friday the 12th. It seemed like the perfect spot to pop my Yak fishing cherry. We were on the water by 7 with excellent conditions. We made a slow pace out beyond Flatiron, trolling in case there were any Kings hanging out on the way.
I was not at all intimidated by the open Ocean, but I ended up a bit humbled. I've never been sick on a powerboat and I've paddled plenty of miles on a Kayak, but I learned that bobbing around on the Ocean in a Kayak is a different ballgame, especially in a place like Trinidad where the rocks create swells that come from varying directions and the fog is so dense that there is no discernible horizon. I probably spent too much time looking at my gear and making sure all my pulls were 24" on the nose and i got a little queasy. Eric recognized it early, but I was in denial, insisting that we press on. I picked up a barely legal ling and a HUGE black right before tossing my cookies. I felt the wonderful post-vomit rush of blood to the head and I was sure I was good to go. Eric was wise enough though to ignore me and guide me to calmer waters where I quickly regained my equilibrium.  I picked up another ling right on the steep inside wall of the head, and then another ling and a couple blacks in the bay. All in all a pretty decent stringer. I was really surprised by the quality of the blacks up there. It seems like you have to pick trough a lot of dinks down this way to find a decent keeper.
The next couple of days I took the fam out for some paddles on the bay and had fun catching some short lings and picked up a couple more blacks. Trinidad is a beautiful place that seems like it's from a bygone era.
I can't recommend strongly enough Eric's services.  He clearly knows how to design an outing on the fly based on his client's experience level and he is conscientious and passionate about the fishery and the environment. I hope to line up another trip with him when my skills are at a different level.

Hey North Coasters-
I'm a not-totally-clueless newbie and I'll be in Trinidad with family at a vacation rental right above the beach with the pier, which appears to be the launch. Looking to get out at daybreak hopefully Friday,
Saturday, and Sunday for rockfish and hopefully lings! If anyone wants to show me around it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Introductions / Hello from San Mateo
« on: June 05, 2016, 11:18:28 AM »
Hi all-
This board looks like a great positive supportive joint.
I'm an avid fisherman (shore, poke pole, party boat) and really looking to get into kayak fishing. I have some experiences kayaking, including a multi-day tour in the San Juans, but those experiences have been few and far between because I've never owned a kayak. I'm looking for gear and newbie advise and eventually will be interested in hookups once I feel like I'm ready to keep up.
My wife and four-year-old love getting on the water and they insist the first kayak I buy  be a tandem. Any recommendations on a craft that I can take the family on and also fish solo? I'm 6'4" 220 lbs- don't know if that means a bigger boat would be better for me anyhow? Any pointers welcome!

Cheers
