Hobie Kayaks / Re: 2022 Hobie Outback Bow Weight
« on: May 22, 2023, 08:58:56 PM »
So first the obvious questions are did you check for water inside? And did somebody hide a bunch of rocks in there?

Otherwise the newer gen (2019+) outback’s are designed to sit level with a loaded rear, so empty they sit higher in the back than front.

When on wheels and pulling around it is all about weight distribution. You can put the wheels toward the front to make it easier to lift the front. Or if you use the rear scuppers for wheels put as much weight as possible over or behind the wheels. It will make the front easier to lift.

Nothing inside aside from the small battery I use for the fish finder. Even with fully empty barebone kayaks, the weight comparison of the two is noticeably different. Regardless of whether there are wheels in it or not.

Hobie Kayaks / 2022 Hobie Outback Bow Weight
« on: May 22, 2023, 05:21:02 PM »
Hello!

Lately, I've noticed that my bow is a lot heavier compared to a couple of my buddies' 2019 Hobie Outbacks. On the water I sit a lot lower compared to them and when on land, lifting the bow up is significantly heavier compared to theirs. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Or is it something that is common with the models in 2022 compared to the earlier models?

Hello!

I'm looking to sell some of my kayak gear as I will not be needing it anymore. The Hobie Trax 2 is used but still in good condition as I purchased it less than half a year ago. As for the Boonedox Landing Gear Kit, it is completely new with only an open box. Please PM me if you're interested or looking to purchase. I can send pictures as well. Located in Hayward, CA. Here are the prices:

Hobie Trax 2: $200
BooneDox Kit: $300

Hobie Kayaks / 2021 Hobie Outback HELP
« on: October 04, 2022, 09:49:17 AM »
Hello!

After purchasing my Hobie I was going through the entire kayak to make sure everything was good and sound being that it was a demo model. When I had gotten to checking the steering and rudder control one of the lines actually snapped. Leaving me with control on one side only.

Does anyone have a recommendation as to where I could get this repaired? Or possibly purchase the items necessary to repair it myself as a last resort? I'm new to Hobie's and not sure how much I trust myself to try and fully fix the whole mechanism. I'd much rather have somebody more knowledgeable look at it.

Sweet fly shop in SF, with some great guys working there. They've helped me with getting setup with stuff for stripers in the bay and new waders!

Hobie Kayaks / Re: Best time of year to buy a new (or used) Outback?
« on: September 28, 2022, 01:34:38 PM »
I just ordered my Hobie Outback from Kayak City, it's the 2021 Hobie Mirage Outback model. It's one of their old demo models, but I called in to ask about the condition of the kayak and they mentioned that it had only been used once out on the water. Here's the link:

https://kayakcity.com/2021-hobie-mirage-outback-dune-demo-model/?sku=SLATE-7BD531D5

They don't do shipping so you'd have to go to the store to pickup the kayak.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Fish Finder Reccomendations
« on: September 28, 2022, 01:15:15 PM »
I just purchased a 2021 Hobie Outback and I'm looking to install a fish finder as one of the key components to my rig. Does anyone have good recommendations? I've seen some guys who have the Panoptics LiveScope but the thing is that the transducer would have to hang off the side and it really only works in freshwater from what I've heard. As well as the price, which is something I'm not willing to pay if I'm not going to be able to use it in fresh and saltwater. Definitely leaning more towards Lowrance or Garmin.

Welcome!
I used to live in Hayward (went to CSUEB).
I love my Hobie Outback, and I can't speak on Old Towns as I have no personal experience on em.
I've heard other people really love them though!

Sweet! I actually ended up ordering a 2021 Hobie Outback Demo model, got it for a pretty good price and it was only used once. Hopefully, once I have it all rigged I'll be able to post some pics.

I go out to the salt to fish for rockfish, lingcod, halibut, striper, and surf perch.

This stuck out to me - how you don't have salmon on there with your salt targets.

Welcome to Nor Cal Kayak Anglers, Devin.   :smt001

A majority of the time, I fish the salt either from a rental boat out of Capitola or on the beach. So utilizing a downrigger or having a fish finder to hit target depths would be pretty difficult. But nonetheless, it's definitely something I'm looking forward to targeting once I get a kayak and have it fully rigged up! A few buddies of mine actually commercial fish for them on their own boats out of Santa Cruz so hopefully I could get some advice from them as well.

Hello!

My name is Devin Aduviso and I was informed to join the NCKA by one of its current members! I'm fairly new to fishing kayaks and am currently in the market for getting one of my own. When it comes to fishing, during the winter I am mostly fishing for rainbow trout in the local lakes or trying to find stripers and halibut within the bay. As opposed to the summer months, I go out to the salt to fish for rockfish, lingcod, halibut, striper, and surf perch.

Currently, I have my eyes on the Old Town Sportsman Salty PDL 120 as a good first kayak. I've definitely enjoyed the test runs I've tried on it and have no problems with it. But I am open to other recommendations as well. Being that I'm only about 5'7 I would not need a humungous kayak that would be a pain to transport and handle. I look forward to learning about kayak angling and gaining knowledge from fellow anglers, and hopefully seeing some of you out on the water!
