Pay It Forward / Fundraiser / Raffle for Kiet Pham aka Bluegill
« on: February 27, 2024, 02:53:33 PM »
Last year, our friend and kayak angling expert Kiet Pham was diagnosed with fibrotic interstitial lung disease, and has been on oxygen and not been able to work. He had to sell most of his kayaks and fishing gear and has been living on limited savings. This disease was terminal unless he received a double lung transplant. Fortunately, this week, he was accepted into the program at Stanford, immediately found a donor and has two brand new (to him) lungs! He is still in hospital, but he should be able to make a full recovery and hopefully join us fishing again the not too distant future. While his prognosis is great, he will be strapped with an astronomical amount of medical debt.
Kiet is an expert kayak angler who is everybody’s friend, and is very open and generous with his fishing advice, camp food and whatever he’s got in his cooler. He embodies our NCKA spirit of community and giving just as much as anyone I’ve ever met. Some of us older NCKA guys know him very well and will hopefully share stories about him here in the comments.

1st Prize - 5 nights at the fabulous Ft. Bragg Pacific Redwood Hideaway. 3 bedrooms and two bathrooms on 1 acre of redwoods, just minutes from the FISHY Mendocino coast! 10/10 on VRBO with over 60 reviews. You pick ANY 5 NIGHTS that aren’t already booked. Perhaps the Rockfish or Salmon opener? Over $3,000 value. Link in comments. 6 people max overnight capacity.

General Talk / Salmon Net for PB?
« on: June 27, 2018, 08:38:36 AM »
Hi all,

I'm sure I'm the first person to ever inquire on the forum: What's a great, high quality, big salmon net for my 21' PB? Looking for recommendations.

Wanted To Buy / WTB Kayak for 9 year old son
« on: February 13, 2016, 01:37:34 PM »
Hi,

I'm looking for a used kayak that my 9 year old can paddle and maneuver efficiently. Something like an OK Tetra 10/12 or Trident 11. Open to anything, really, if the price is right.

Thanks,
napajustin

General Talk / All I want for Christmas is my Kokatat Dry Suit
« on: December 12, 2014, 02:04:48 PM »
Hello friends, I'm trying to subliminally program my wife for a Christmas gift- but there are so many options, and at the prices they go for, I really don't want the wrong one or to go too crazy $$ wise. Hydrus 3L SuperNova Angler? Meridian? Gore-tex front entry? Gore-tex rear entry? Looking for quality and durability, I destroy stuff.

If anyone has a used XL (or L once I drop my "turkey weight") I might go for that too. And of course if there are any vendors that are NCKA friendly I'd gladly support ya. Any feedback would be great.

Thanks,
Justin

Fishing Tournaments and Events / Albion Open - bring power boat?
« on: July 23, 2014, 12:22:27 PM »
Can't decide if I should just bring the yak, or whether I should also bring my 21' Seaswirl Striper. Is there a harbor I could slip it for the weekend? Would anyone want to go out with me?

For Sale / WTB Roof Rack / Cross bars / Kayak rack
« on: July 21, 2014, 10:20:04 AM »
Hi there,

Just bought a 2006 Silverado 2500HD Crew cab. It has a 6.5 foot bed. I'm adding a camper shell, and I need a roof rack and bars to bolt to that(right?) to transport my Scupper Pro. If anyone has something like this, please let me know. Any suggestions are welcome, because I know nothing about this stuff and really don't want to screw up my truck.

Thanks

General Talk / FALL CLASSIC 2013 RIP OFF
« on: December 10, 2013, 04:12:59 PM »
Brothers and Sisters,

I have to start by saying I really thought good and hard before posting this on the board. I primarily joined NCKA to meet new friends, relax and experience the incredible beauty of nature. Fishing has reduced my level of stress tremendously, and in a way no other activity can compete with. But most of all this website has unexpectedly become a sort of family to me, once I witnessed how much this group takes care of it's own. Who would have though that I'd be making some friends that I believe I will keep for a lifetime. It's awesome to belong to something so special.

But, to the point: Has anyone gotten their Fall Classic shirts, hoodies, other apparel, etc? I paid for the tournament entry, a long sleeve shirt and a hoodie. I also won the raffle and scored some sweet sportfishing charter tickets to the Channel Islands! Spike made it clear that he fumbled the order and put it in too late- but that he would be shipping the shirts(and the raffle prize) out to us the following week. Well, that never happened. So, I sent a friendly email to Spike asking what was up, who then told me the unfortunate news that his Mom was ill from an infection, and it sounded serious. Not to worry though- I'd be receiving my stuff by the end of the week. I of course was empathetic to Spike. What horrible news! We've fished together many times, so my response to this was "Bro! I understand! Thank you!". I mean, obviously my shirt and prize aren't nearly as important as a serious family emergency. Another couple weeks went by. I sent another friendly email, and was told "Sorry, they should go out Wednesday. Thursday at the latest!". Weeks go by. Another email sent, and I continued to get the same sort of BS a couple more times. At this point it was obvious I was being deceived and I started to get frustrated. I spoke with another well known NCKA brother who mentioned that he knew of someone else who hadn't received any of their stuff either. In fact, it's possible NOBODY has their stuff yet. True?

Two months went by, so a week ago I decided to politely change my strategy:
I sent:
Spike,

Dude! We're bro's, comrades, family, etc. and I very empathetic to your family situation. I hope your Mom is okay. That being said, I still don't have any of my stuff and you keep telling me it's going out "this day", but clearly nothing has been shipped yet. Am I the only one? Does anyone in NCKA have the items the paid for and/or won yet? I hope to at least get an honest reply with a real shipping deadline.

Thanks Dennis,
Justin

A week went by and this time he did not reply, so yesterday I sent this email:

Hey Spike,

So I've been asking you for two months and I keep getting the run around. I made sure the last email I sent was kind and understanding to your situation. It's important to me as a club member to always extend the benefit of the doubt. NCKA is a special brotherhood, a rare group of really fantastic, generous, and loyal friends. We've fished and crabbed together many times too. However, I am feeling like I have been ripped off/scammed as I still don't have my shirt/hoodie, and worse, the sportfishing tickets I won in the raffle. Family emergency or not, you repeatedly lied to me when you promised pending shipment.

Since I haven't heard back from you, my next task will be creating a public post on the forum to see how many others there are in the same situation. Out of respect, I thought I'd try one more time to resolve this privately before I cause drama on the board. It's really the last thing I want to do, and not my style- but neither is being stolen from.

Thanks,
Justin

There has been no response to this email, either. So, my hand is forced. If anything, I know that I won't be signing up for this event again(i'll still show up and fish that day). Also, there is no way I would ever consider buying an RTM kayak when the primary vendor is so untrustworthy and sheisty. Lastly, I'll make sure I spread the word about this bad deal in hope to prevent anyone else from being deceived. I travel all over the Bay Area for work and I am always talking about kayak fishing (wife is going nuts). Maybe any of you others out there could share your experience on this post and help to put the pressure on.

Sorry to stink up the place, but this will be my only complaint post of 2013.

Thanks,
napajustin
