Welcome to the community Tom!

I am sorry that I don't have any answers to your questions, but I would like to say that your book "California Fishing" is by far the most valuable text I have in a very extensive angling library. I bought a copy when it first came out (I think in '92), and I literally wore out two paperback copies before getting a copy on my Kindle. It is a rare day that I do not reference that text, and when I am in between books, I always revisit "California Fishing". I have taken multi week road trips with that book as my sole guide, and over the years it has put hundreds (thousands at this point?) of fish in the boat, and exposed me to amazing California fisheries that I would of otherwise never been exposed to. Thanks you!

Welcome to the forum Pescadero! I share your open minded angling beliefs, and enjoy thinking out of the box in order to give the fish what they want. I like your example of a fly on a spinning rod, and a worm with a fly rod. Been there, done that, will do it again.  :thumright:

General Fishing Tips / Re: Alameda Rockwall-Landing in low tide?
« on: August 30, 2018, 01:43:25 PM »
Shouldn't be a problem. The ramp gets a little slippery at very low tides, but that's not a big deal once you realize it. You won't be walking through mud flats, if that's the concern.

It's also fairly wind protected by the jetty most of the time, so not a big deal there either. I've been out there in some very windy conditions, and landing was the least concerning part of these trips.
Cool, good 411, thanks man! Maybe I'll see ya out there?

Unless the wind is diectly from the South launch and landing is no problem. What time are you launching?  I dont see the wind being that strong early in the morning.
I'm planning on launching around 6:30, and I agree, I really don't think wind will be an issue

General Fishing Tips / Alameda Rockwall-Landing in low tide?
« on: August 30, 2018, 10:41:50 AM »
Hey gang!
I'm thinking about giving it a go at the ARW this coming monday, as the conditions look good I think (high tide of 4.6 @ 7:35, low tide of 2.8 @12:35, wind WNW of 13 mph, 72 degrees).
The question I'm putting to you ARW veteranos is how difficult if at all will it be returning to the Encinal launch at the low tide, if at all?
Thanks for your time, and if you happen to see me out there, please holler at me! Dorky 43 year old white guy on a camo Prowler 13 over here!  :smt003

General Fishing Tips / Re: Tomales Bay Leopards and Rays From Shore
« on: August 03, 2018, 04:23:07 PM »
Just wanted to thank everyone for all the good info! Y'all are the best.  :thumright:
Had a fun day with the boy, and even managed to get him hooked up to a bat ray of about 15 lbs, his largest fish by about 14 pounds.  :smt003 Judging by his excited chatter for the rest of the day, I think he's officially "hooked".
Thanks again gang!

General Fishing Tips / Tomales Bay Leopards and Rays From Shore
« on: July 26, 2018, 03:13:11 PM »
Hey gang! I'm spending the day tomorrow with my eleven year old fishaholic nephew. He has never caught anything larger than a little planter trout, and i would love to see him hook into something that will rip line off the reel  :smt044. I grew up fishing sharks at the ARW, but that was a strictly night time affair (never had luck with big leopards during the day), and I wouldn't feel good about bringing him out there at night nowadays.
So I'm thinking a day trip to Tomales Bay for some old fashioned bank fishing, but I have no clue as to where to begin. If any of y'all know of a spot where we might have a decent chance at hooking into a ray or shark, it would be appreciated. Not asking for any honey holes (unless you're feeling extra super generous, than PM me  :smt003).
Thanks everyone!

Welcome! :smt006

Night fishing is my favorite. No crowds, the water gets quiet, it's cooler in the summertime, and the fishing can often be spectacular. Something about a big bass blowing up on a top water in the moon light that just gets my heart thumpin'!
If anybody wants to hook up for some night excursions, hit me up!

It's kind of funny how we designate one fish a respectable game fish, and another a trash fish, despite being challenging to pursue, and probably one of the best fighting fresh water fish out there.
All the carp I've ever caught have been by accident. I keep telling myself I'm going to learn this amazing fishery, yet whenever I get a chance I find myself pursuing the usual charismatic species.
Old habits die hard I guess! :smt044
