Took the kids to arroyo seco river for some fly fishing. I'm not the most experienced fly fisherman so I was happy to get a few fish. I didn't get anything big but for small water fishing, I was happy with what I got. Taking the dog definitely made it difficult to not spook the fish at times...

Hey, some pretty good action out there, and never heard of that river till now. Also had no idea there was such highly speckled trout and they don't always have to live in cold mountain streams. Great fun for the kids too!

Dude that was great! But it makes me feel even more bummed about the Nat’l Forest closure because I was totally planning to hit the upper arroyo seco! It’s one of my favorite places in the world and I haven’t been back since the Dolan & Willow fires scortched it (I did fish the lower river during steelhead season this Jan-March and there was a crazy amount of silt/mud/debris along the banks). Hopefully they reopen the forest before trout season closes on Sept 30!!! Because we got completely screwed by the DFW’s trout regulation simplification project last year—and lost 2 & half months of fishing season! Complete bullshit decision with no rationale. Shit I’m still mad about that.

The last spot you were at is always a good one—but also a great swimming hole. Between there & Escondido there are a bunch of deep holes with nice trout (and pikeminnow this time of year). I’ve noticed the odd spots that the rainbows have for about 6 years now…I was told it’s some kind of disease that gets exacerbated by warm water temps.

Edit: you can see the weird speckles/spots in this video. The bow that’s swimming at the 1 minute mark was about 20” long. I’ve got fish to 18” in the upper river but have also seen a few 10lb steelhead up there…good luck landing it though haha. :-)
Dang what happened to the music on my video…d’oh! Oh well.

Excellent. I can relate to fly fishing with a nosy dog. Barbless hooks will come out easier and be less damaging to the fish.

Luckily no ticks on him. I did a good check and brushing when we got home but he was tick free.
