Welcome.
As mentioned, Step #1 is getting the safety gear. Some of us won't be very kind and avoid fishing with you if we see you without it. Not because we are A..holes (Its a positive helpful group) but because we aren't fond of risking our lives for the unprepared
Step #2 Watch those YouTube videos and practice self-rescue in a warm local lake
Step #3 Consider hiring Eric Stockwell or ? to guide your first ocean adventure and / or tag along with some of the experienced people from this site. Have partners you can trust for Ocean trips !
Step #4 Watch the wind and wave reports and if Ocean fishing be sure you  know how to launch and land from a beach, versus launching from  a harbor.
Step #5 Catch some fish.

Get to Stillwater EARLY on weekends. Bring a Trout rod too for the fun factor as there are often near surface schools of Blues  and Blacks.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Safety of pedal leash
« on: May 12, 2022, 08:40:52 PM »
Always unleash my paddle in the surf. Means launching and landing. Taught so by the great and wise Bushy. Good advice.

And always leash and keep leashed my pedal drive ( Hobie ) while on the water.

Where is the best place to Target Pacific Halibut? I have not seen any caught in the Half Moon Bay area.
Shelter Cove

General Fishing Tips / Re: Monterey RF advice

It's early for options like Coral St. It was really wicked out there when we drove by today. Stillwater is mostly protected and midweek a better time to go given crowds and limited parking. Launching or landing during higher tides is problematic as there is no beach. Areas off MBK are fair and a rise of 5ft is considered structure worth checking out

There are quite a few experienced kayak fishermen in Newark/Fremont area. Get the right safety gear and practice self rescue at Quarry Lakes and you'll be welcome to join us in April when the Bay & Ocean fishing turns on.

General Fishing Tips / Re: When do you upgrade kayaks?
« on: January 14, 2022, 01:42:31 PM »
The Compass is a great boat although I wish they had stayed with a twist and stow rudder. I have a 2012 Revo and a Compass. The Compass has become my primary boat for Ocean fishing.
Pedal yaks are IMO superior for trolling. However if you are rockfishing from small Sonoma coast spots, also having a paddle yak for beach launches could be a good thing.
Getting a Pro Angler down to a beach and then launched is a heck of a lot of work. It's more of a Harbor or lake boat

General Talk / Re: Is the bull kelp rebounding?
« on: December 07, 2021, 10:20:25 AM »
I wanted to add an update to my comment I posted earlier. I had a conversation a few weeks ago with a wildlife biologist about relocating some sea otters to help with the urchin problem. They said it’s a really good idea but the sea otters love eating abalone and with the declining red abalone population they aren’t able to relocate or allow any sea otters north of San Francisco until the abalone population rebounds.

I did spend some time many years ago tracking and censusing Otters. and from what I learned I don't agree with the biologist. Sea
Otters got a bad rap for Abalone predation back then too and we had plenty of kelp.
Bottom line is Otters can eat up to 70 Urchins a day. Less Urchins means more kelp. More kelp means more Abalone. Otters are part of what nature decided should be over the course of tens of thousands of years.
Nowdays, Otters are a missing part. The possibility of Otters eating a few more Abalone in the short term is short sighted (IMHO) in terms of what good they can do in the long run

Safety First / Re: Missing Kayaker - Mavericks/HMB
« on: September 16, 2021, 04:12:36 PM »
I was working with the Rangers at Memorial Park when there was a call for the their assistance, .But I didn't hear the location. Was thinking it was near the Bean. Surprised  it was HMB. Some people don't understand the hazards towards Mavericks. guess he learned.

W winds 5 to 10 kt. Wind waves 4 to 5 ft ?

5-10 knots doesn't produce 4-5 ft wind waves. Maybe you have that backwards

Coyote Point Park
Paddle out of harbor. turn right along rock rip rap. Troll or cast 1/4th 1/2 Oz white hairraisers with or without white curly tail grub - -in close to the rocks for Stripers Also to the left - off rock islands and along shoreline can be good. Bass plugs also work. Providedthe wid stays down hour before or after high tide is best time.
Palo Alto is doable if tides are not real low.Don't put apedal drive down until you reach the bay. Mostly just Leopard Sharks there
