Fishing Tournaments and Events / GS8 - sixpack charter
« on: May 09, 2014, 09:56:44 AM »
Hi

I have a charter planned for my father( for his 84th B-day) scheduled for Monday while I'm out on the Hike & Dive. Unfortunately two of the others that were going may not be able to make it. I'm looking for options, as it would be nice to have my Dad go out in the company of NCKA family. So, if anybody has family attending who might be interested in a half day charter for either Salmon or Rock Cod and would be interested in a Monday trip. please let me know.
The boat is the C,Mon with skipper Jared Morris, formerly of the Sea Hawk. He really put them on the fish last year.  My dad caught a dozen Lings and had three double Ling hookups.
If someone is going out on another boat on Sunday or Monday and there are seats left, let me know. Perhaps my dad can join you

General Fishing Tips / South Lake Tahoe - Late April
« on: April 11, 2014, 11:39:10 AM »
I'll be in South Lake Tahoe for a few days. Skiing is likely to be shut down by then.....so....
I may have time on Sunday or Monday, April 27th - 28th to do some fishing. I believe the Macks are in shallow in April. I could take a yak , but would have to pay through the nose for secure parking. Is there somewhere in South Lake I can rent a fishing kayak? Any advice on areas to fish  and techniques, etc would be appreciated.

General Talk / Craft Butcher
« on: January 24, 2014, 01:40:25 PM »
There is a small craft butcher's shop opening in Redwood City. It's called Gambrel & Co..
I don't have any connection to them, I just like seeing a small quality business have a chance against the chains. Since I'm into smoking meats now, we were taking about the best cuts for that. He said they will probably bring in Venison, Buffalo and other exotics as they get going. He makes his own sausages. He mentioned one, a chicken, artichoke , pesto sausage that sounded really good. They are having a grand opening this Saturday, the 25th 5-9PM. Sausage samples, specials and other goodies. If you are down in RWC for a movie, dinner or some music stop on by.

General Talk / Kayak Deal at Dick's
« on: January 11, 2014, 06:44:53 PM »
FYI - Stopped by Dick's Sporting Goods in Livermore today. They have a Field and Stream brand Eagle Talon 12' SOT on sale for $329.   I've seen some new kayak fishermen posting lately, looking for a first kayak that doesn't break their budget. This kayak looked fairly well made compared to something you might see at Walmart etc.  It's gotten  good reviews for handling, speed and stability. Some negative comments on seat comfort but that can be fixed with some extra padding or an aftermarket seat

General Talk / Smoking wood source ??
« on: December 26, 2013, 05:13:33 PM »
Hi

I got a cool Smoke Hollow brand 38 x 20 smoker. I'm starting to do lots experimenting etc. Burning everything from twigs off my Persimmon and Orange trees to  Rosemary, Sage  and Orange peels plus rice and tea.
Of course I've bought some bags of wood chips. These can be a bit expensive. Does somebody sell chips In bulk or does anybody have a source of  fruitwood etc.

Thanks
Kirk

« on: September 12, 2013, 09:47:50 AM »
I have at least a half dozen of these nice, padded, semi-rigid, zippered, electronics cases. Has padded velcoed divider.Name tag hlder on top.  They are approximately 8" x16".
Looks like they would be great for transporting fish finders, GPS and other valuables. They are trash bound if nobody wants them.  Can bring to MBK on Sunday.

Hobie Kayaks / Hobie drive broke twice today
« on: September 01, 2013, 07:32:24 PM »
Had an excellent morning keeping Bushy company in the search for the elusive Halibut. Then headed for the SC mile buoy. Almost there and the drive breaks. One turbo fin was hanging by just the pin. The fin's shaft had come out. Did OTW repairs. while worrying that I'd drop a part in the Ocean. The shaft was in pretty tight but I managed to pull it out with my fish pliers. I screwed the shaft snuggly back in. Put the fin on and put the pin back in and secured it with the retaining ring. Fished here and there and drifted back to the harbor. The drive broke again right outside the harbor.
Saw a video in a recent thread where the fins came off, but in it they talked about an Allen retaining screw  that holds the shaft vibrating loose.  My V2 drive doesn't have this. The shaft screws in so the Alen screw is eliminated.
The Shaft seemed pretty tight in both the fitting and in the fin. Somehow the whole foot long shaft must be turning and unscrewing.
I've only done 10 trips on this drive so I'm surprise this is happening so soon.
Who else has had this happen with the screw in fin shaft?  Plumbers tape or Loctite, what's the best solution ?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Sidekick ama rod holder etc mounting
« on: August 30, 2013, 08:02:43 PM »
I have the Hobie Sidekick Ama for rough tournament days etc. The center bar is permanently mounted behind  the seat  The bar seems like a good place to put rod holders etc. I think I've seen stuff mounted on the center bar on other Revos but can't remember specifics.
If you have a good setup mounted on an Ama center bar, please post up some pictures

Thanks

General Talk / Monterey fish cleaning

Back in the day I always cleaned fish on the fish cleaning station on the commercial wharf. I don't think it's there anymore. Just checking in case I'm wrong. Is there anywhere to clean / fillet fish near MBK

General Talk / Random act of human kindness
« on: August 05, 2013, 01:17:39 PM »
I went to the Fremont Art Festival this weekend. As usual I stopped by the booth of a favorite artist, Richard Vest. He specializes in wildlife carvings. I have several of his pieces, which I love. I asked him about pricing on some carvings, saying I was thinking one might be nice for a PIF event we have to benefit members dealing with Cancer.
Before I could blink I had a Whale carving in my hands. His gift to our next PIF.
Sometimes basic human kindness really warms your heart.

He didn't ask for any promotional consideration or anything, but I'll post his link here so you can enjoy viewing some of his works.

Here's the first raffle prize for our next PIF
