Don't leave your stuff outside unsecured.
OC ain't what it used to be.

😔 Seems nowhere is anymore. Thanks Tote. I'll be on guard. Packed up my cable lock

Thanks for the advise Chadrock.  We will be at the campground so I will just plan on launching there.
Jim. Such a bummer we are going to miss each other. I would have loved to met up and fish with you. Sean mentioned making plans to fish with you this week. I'm sorry I'll miss that. Chelsey and I miss having a friend so close in the neighborhood. Hope you are well. Where are you living now? Sac? Fresno?  Please let us know if next time you are in the area.

Is Ocean Cove proper the best place to launch?  Ive hear alot about Timber cove and Stillwater.  Where would you rather launch?

My wife and daughter and I are planning on arriving Tuesday mid day at Ocean Cove. If we can secure a campsite, we can stay as late as Saturday.  Ill have my kayak and gear with me and plan to get at least a couple morning sessions in.  I do not know the area and have never launched there before. My Shark Shield just died after 6 seasons of regular use, and their inventory is currently backlogged a couple months. It would be great to have some company with some local knowledge. So, anybody planning on fishing this week?  The forecast is looking good. Im game for salmon trolling or bottom fishing.   :smt006

We received your excellent news text message on our way up to Shelter Cove. I was so relieved to hear this right before going dark(out of cell range). It literally made my trip that much more enjoyable. I can't convey how excited Chels and I were to hear that. I felt like I was stressing out for you. Can't even imagine how you must have felt. You are truely blessed my friend. Good to hear you are paying it forward to those less fortunate than yourselves.

Nice meeting you and Joe! I was camped next to you guys  :smt006

It was nice meet you and your camp as well.  When the radio went off and explained a yellow kayak, I immediately though it was you.  Sorry it had to happen at all. :smt009 never a dull moment at The Cove

Glad you are OK Dave. Sandlance and I were at the cove that day too. We actually spoke with you that morning near the green can.
Later that day, a boater came to my camp with a bag of your stuff he recovered floating in the water. He asked if I knew where you were camped so that he could return it to you . I think they left your stuff at the deli. Hope you were able to get it before you left.
Anyway welcome to the club which nobody wants to a member of. Hope you don't stop kayaking because of this. Get a shark shield. I truly believe they work.

Safety First / Re: Why not to use mono from kayak
« on: May 17, 2020, 09:25:52 AM »
Mono has its applications; trolling and fly lines.  But I never use above 20 lbs for the kayak.  As you said its too hard to break (especially in deep water).  20 lbs mono will easily two your kayak so it not necessary to go heaver then that.
For bottom fishing/jigging, I use braid with a 30 ft topshot as has been said. This way I can just keep trimming the mono leader as it becomes damaged.   Again I dont use above 20 lbs line for the kayak.  You'll need heavy braid if you set up a "Kelp-Cutter" rod, but I dont know alot about them.
Thats my 2c

I caught this fish back in 2015 while trolling bonito (which were around for several weeks that year). My amateur ID was sablefish. Is this correct?

General Talk / Re: Santa Cruz Beaches shutting Down
« on: April 10, 2020, 11:54:01 PM »
Been writing this report weekly for like 15 years.  I think this is the first time I've used the "First Person" voice.  Typically I will employ the "Royal We."

Fish Report

I don’t think it’s what the Beach Boys had in mind when they produced the 1963 hit “Shut Down,” but that’s the song running through my head all day. Over the past couple weeks, we have seen the California Department of Fish and Wildlife postpone salmon season and all the coastal harbors close their launch ramps, reverting to essential services only. And then the Santa Cruz County Health Department closed all access and use of county beaches. The Santa Cruz Harbor announced on Wednesday additional constrictions on all activities, in accordance with the County Health Department. “This closure includes, but is not limited to, walking, running, jogging, horseback riding, cycling, surfing, paddleboarding and kayaking. Public restrooms will be closed in the harbor area, and visitor parking will be limited to 20 minutes,” announced Marian Olin, Port Director.

At the time of this writing, it is unclear as to whether or not Monterey County will be closing all beach access as well. San Mateo County officially closed all beach parking lots two weeks ago, and anecdotal reports indicate law enforcement is issuing citations for vehicles parked in unmarked roadside turnouts. So, as it stands, anglers are effectively shut down from any access to fishing opportunities, except for those fortunates who already have boats docked in slips at the harbors and can maintain proper social distancing aboard their vessels.

But wait, there’s more. On Tuesday this week, the CDFW announced an emergency meeting, saying, “The California Fish and Game Commission will remotely meet to discuss delegating temporary authority to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to delay, suspend or restrict sport or recreational fishing if the director of CDFW, in consultation with the president of the Commission, finds that such action is necessary to protect against the threat from COVID-19 based on state, federal, local, and tribal public health guidance and public safety needs.” Public comment was invited via telephone or website, but we have seen how well that works in the past. It is very likely the Commission will instruct the CDFW to “shut ‘em down.”

I get it. This is an unprecedented international medical emergency. The drastic steps attached to shelter in place models are there to save lives and I am all for that. However, shutting things down may prove easier than opening things back up. There are no firm deadlines for these measures. Recent experience has shown just the opposite to be true. Travel and social limitations have all been extended, every one. Increasing politicization of this issue is pretty much a foregone conclusion. Nothing works better to drag things out than to frame it in politics. Hopefully sooner, rather than later, we’ll be singing a different tune, perhaps “I Get Around!”

Good write up... except now Ive got Beach Boys stuck in my head  :BangHead:
