Took the kid out to lake chabot and rented a 'feel free corona' tandem. It worked good for just the 2 of us. It had 2 seats mounted, and I noticed in the middle it looked like it had 1 more seat molded into it. Felt pretty stable, easy to maneuver and get around. I think I can make something like that work for us

You know it will never ever be legal. But I gotta say, it would be pretty cool if you could get a tag for a great white. Not to harvest - I would not have any idea what to do with it other than display the teeth. But just to be able to target them and try and reel one in!

OR

Let private citizens keep them as pets. Keep one of them bad boys in my bath tub.

Years back we camped there right on the river bank upstream from the 101 bridge. Had a 13ft gregor boat we managed to drag up river and caught 2 good sized fish at 'blakes run'. Game wardens do stop you and check leader length to make sure you are not 'flossing'. At the mouth it can be combat fishing, shoulder to shoulder and you will probably see natives using nets. They will just toss nets right in front of the whole crowd, drift the nets right through everyones lines and tangle/snag you and just cut your line off.

Thats not the end, some weird stuff goes on as you go further up river into the reservation. We were stopped by the tribal police who were looking for someone who was armed, they were very serious and strongly advised we go elsewhere. That night we heard up in the woods what sounded like people partying but as the night went on it was screaming and fighting and people banging on stuff (not drums). Next day we saw some debris floating down river, pulled the boat up to it and it was the body of a black bear with its head cut off. That was the last day of our trip.

Its wild out there. Be smart, stay safe

Some kind of parasite. I would throw it back. You could probably eat it if you cooked the $#i+ out of it, but no thanks. I have caught stripers before with a red sore on the belly and when you fillet those things out they are full of worms. You can hold the fillet up to the sunlight and see them all.

Got a wife and a 4 year old. Rented a 3 seater before and it was fun but felt slow and hard to turn and the seat was terrible. I think we can squeeze the kid onto a tandem with us. Primary use would be lakes and some spots in the Delta, possibly on SF bay to bag a halibut or stripers on a calm day. Would not always be the 3 of us, me and the kid would likely be primary users. So it would be nice to have a boat that can be easily solo paddled.

Not set on any brand or model, I figure I can screw some rod holders and my fish finder to pretty much anything. Got next weekend free, we might rent a boat from CCK out in Oakland and see how that goes. Definately going to be renting a few before we commit to buy and open to getting a used boat (or two). Looking to keep cost of boat to about a grand, we dont have any other gear so I figure 500 or so will go to paddles and other gear

General Talk / Re: Penn reel rebuild question

There is a huge following for these old penn reels. I went down the rabbit hole a while back and upgraded both the penn 500's that I run for sturgeon and yellowtail. You can get these things to work butter smooth, swap out the drags, replace with custom cut stainless parts, you name it.

If you got time check out alan tani's site ( i think he was from san jose but people all over the globe frequent the site). Tutorials, vids, parts, upgrades, repairs, etc

https://alantani.com/index.php

Also you can get upgraded stainless parts here:

Smooth drag carries all the drag washers and whatnot:

Then you can dump your wallet on aluminum frames and spools:

New to the board here, long time bay area fisher. Many moons ago I frequented the fish sniffer board but that is long gone. No kayaks yet, but I owned a few boats over the years and had to sell the last one when we had our kid (he is 4 now). I do have a float tube that I have caught many bass, trout and stripers from. Hoping to upgrade from the tube to a 'yak here soon!
